All Things:AMC television

I was really disappointed in that episode. I dislike Beth the most out of pretty much everyone, but she really had her moments last night. Everyone else was terrible. That lollipop scene with Officer Rapey was ****ing terrifying. Jesus. I just really hate how TWD splits the characters up and then spends entire episodes focusing on one or two characters, especially if they're boring characters. I'd really rather they move back and forth between groups in each episode. We didn't need a full hour of Beth wandering around a hospital.

AND WTF WITH CAROL. As long as Carol's okay, I don't really care. I'd like to see Carol and Beth work together to take the hospital down.

I wouldn't worry too much about Carol. She is becoming the one woman problem solving unit. Kinda the swiss camping knife of the show. I would like to see some meme campaign spring up "IF CAROL DIES...WE RIOT". I kinda like the individual episodes...as long as they are done well. Best example is the Governor stand-alone. I still think that was one of the best episodes of the show entirely because it took a paper thin character and made you kinda feel a little conflicted. THAT is exactly what was wrong with last nights episode. The whole thing was inhabited by one dimensional stereotypes. You really could have had something with the lead cop...Flo? Trying desperately to hold her little pocket of humanity together by enforcing THE LAW. But it was just bad writing and almost vaudevillian hammy performances. That scene where she smacked Beth instead of the doc reminded me of the cartoon where Daffy Duck is the bellboy who keeps waking up the really BIG man who then proceeds to punch Porky Pig(or was it Elmer?). And officer Rapey was WAAAAAAAAAAy worse. Who wouldn't have just put a bullet in his head? No arguments, no pro or con, just...gotta go gotta go. If you are trying to maintain law and order how would you allow that shaved ape to pervert everything you are basing your 'society' on? And the Doc. Good-ish storyline. The twist with the wrong meds...ok, that was good enough to save the episode. But it was rushed/poorly directed and the doc was not very sympathetic either. It coulda been good, but it was a weakish premise done poorly.
Did like Noah though so hopefully he is in the bushes waiting.
 
One other thing. Anyone else have DirecTV? I guess AMC is doing what they do and that is trying to squeeze every remaining penny and they are in a fight with satellite providers. They ran a big banner across the screen in the middle of the show THREE freaking times threatening those of us who are non-cable with "you will lose TWD if you don't impel your satellite provider to agree to our terms blah, blah, blah!" Got news for you AMC - my bill is already too high. I will stop watching and won't lose any sleep if they Direct doesn't settle. The greed of AMC is astounding.

I read that...and ignored it. The way I see it this is the opening salvo in the war for public opinion. DirecTv is no Robin Hood here. They always cry about how they are trying to keep costs down so they don't have to pass them on to their subscribers...while they raise prices. If AMC were to ask for LESS money...do you think Dtv would lower their rates? It's all a scam. And...AMC has the top rated show on tv. PERIOD. If Dtv don't want to pay...let them explain that to their subscribers. Neither side is faultless...they are both greedy.

This is why programming needs to be ala carte. Let the consumer decide if they want to pay the raised amount if AMC raises the price. I for one would have a ton less channels and it would be nice to only pay for channels during certain times of the year too. I do that with Netflix. I wait till certain shows air and the pay for a month or two at a time. Too bad we are still far from this.

I fully get what JD and you are saying Troy. I think I would be inclined to do this as well but the content I am trying to see is owned and maintained by so many entities that it would be probably impossible to make it economical for the consumer. I just read an interesting blurb in the biz daily reports that the old media model is probably dead and it is hard to figure out where the future is in five years. Ad revenue for the channels is way down and viewership in the coveted 18-49 market (which of course I am no longer a part of) is off this year as well. Channels/broadcasters are looking to fill the gap and want the cable/dish industry to pay more. I am totally down with me going to a provider and just asking for the certain channels I want not what they chose for me but with government requirements of certain channels needing to be offered in every package as welll as the content ownership being across the board make this seem impossible. Obviously, though, the present model isn't working for anyone and needs to be changed.

There’s good news and bad news for fans of AMC’s Western series Hell on Wheels. The good news is that Hell on Wheels Season 5 has officially been ordered. The bad news is the show has also effectively been canceled. THR reports that the cable network has commissioned 14 final episodes for the series, which will be split into two half-seasons as per AMC’s annoying new tradition. The first half of Season 5 will air next summer, while the second half will air in Summer 2016. This is the same strategy that was employed for the final seasons of both Breaking Bad and Mad Men, and serves to pad out AMC’s original programming content while the network tries to get a new hit series off the ground.

I finally caught back up this morning (made the mistake of watching the 'Tainted Meat' episode immediately after a recent SAMCRO with more fun amputation - only needed a GOT episode for the trifecta), and as usual I enjoyed it, even if I don't get how the guy with the injured leg got past Beth and escaped while she got captured. The lollipop thing was a new kind of ick. I assume rapey cop (and possibly the other male cops) are allowed to be rapey by boss lady in return for staying and letting boss lady run things. When injured leg guy said she controlled 'them', she meant the cops, not the zombies. I also got the sense that Carol intentionally got 'saved' by the cops after she and Daryl ran into injured leg guy. Daryl goes with injured guy (who knows where the facility is) to get backup from Rick, and thus injured guy was the one coming out of the trees with Daryl.

I like the focused episodes, because so many other shows try to have everyone in each episode and nothing gets accomplished by anyone, plus there are usually some characters wasting time with meaningless filler created just to get them in the episode. I want to see the other characters, but they will be back tonight or next week. GOT kind of takes the middle ground, leaving some out each time, and it seems to work pretty well there.

Watching that debacle that was tacked on to the end of the last SAMCRO episode, I have a huge new respect for Chris Hardwick. I also learned why talk shows have studio audiences.
 
Surprised to read the reviews of TWD this morning, all of them mostly positive. I thought it was boring and focused on really one dimensional characters, very reminiscent of Kirkman's writing in the comics. Maybe if it hadn't come back to back with the Bethisode it may not have been such a slog. We have been away from the main characters too long. Normally like Ford/Cuditz a lot, but Red Rocker ain't doing it for me. We get why he is so hyper focused on the task at hand...but who cares really? And the reveal, and him having that reason for living ripped away...didn't have the effect on me that I think they wanted. The firehose solution was pretty groovy though...SOUPs ON!!!!!!!

I think the show has lost momentum when they do entire split episodes for weeks on end. Plus the flow slows way down compared to the first three episodes. Next week we have the storyline for Daryl and Carol and Beth again. If you are still trying to attract new audiences to TWD they are not going to get attached to the shows characters if they don't see them for weeks on end. Lasts years half season made sense and added a lot of character depth but this season had such promise and the slowed it way down way to much. It's going to be 4 weeks till we revisit the main group and that is too long.
 
Hell on Wheels...welcome back. Rip Sid the kid. Judging by how cruel the fates have been on the show, I ain't holding out much hope for Church Lady. I really hope Bohannon's showdown with the Governor doesn't come till the end of the last/next season. Y'know, I have always been irritated by Colm Meany, but Durant is a lot of fun. The matter of fact way he told Bohannon he would be forgotten...they have developed a nice give and take. Gonna frikking miss this show that just continues to get better and better.

Isn't it on next week? I thought they had two more shows until mid-season end? I do agree with you and jd that they have lost some of the momentum and promise from early on. I think they struggle with how to tell the story and do character development and pace it all in a 47 minute loop. Although some of the Carol flashback last night was a waste of time.

Yes it is on next week. Two more episodes this half season.

When I said 4 weeks I meant the main group has not been a part of the show the last 3 episodes. Beth episode, Eugene group, Darryl and Carol. That means any new people that started watching the show have not seen any characters from the main group for four weeks.

But hey what do I know as it is the number one show out there so they must be doing something right.

There's been nothing so far this season that is anywhere near as bad as the farm episodes, or the episodes where emo Rick would yell Carl's name over and over again.
