PJ Harvey is God
Now THAT is funny.
I sure as **** ain't going to argue on behalf of Diablo Cody. Jason Reitman, though? Thank You For Smoking? Up In The Air?
And Patton Oswalt? I'm not saying anything he's in is automatically great (especially if it's a TV show), but it counts for something, doesn't it?
At this point...he's diluted things so much that i am automatically suspiscious.
Who? Patton?
Explain yourself.
Yes. I have seen him in so many crappy bit parts that I no longer assume that his appearance in a movie means anything other than he wants a paycheck to buy...'alllll the ham'.
Turning any artists name into a cult sounding organization...yeah. Here's your beret.
Who do you think they're aiming for by casting him in this movie?! COME ON MAN!!!
You think Patton Oswalt is going to draw people to this movie that wouldn't otherwise watch it? COME ON MAN!!!
Ah. Well, there might be some truth to that, but I have trouble believing that number would be all that big.
I think it's much more likely that he was cast because he's funny and not a bad actor.

Half right. C'mon, as an actor he's a good comedian. He ain't no Robin Williams. At best he plays Patton in some form with a variable volume control of 1-10, at worst he plays a character like in Big Fan, where he is some sort of personality deficient. I have a feeling that the second Patton could probably have filled the sandpaper fapping part in Human Centipede 2 just as well as the guy they got.
But yeah, Naysay is right, for the time being, his name adds a certain clout to anything. And we all fall for it because we like the guy, but it rarely ever works out does it? Look at Craig Robinson. There is a guy who never disappoints. No matter how small the part. If he's in it i know i am gonna have a giggle. Patton not so much. You ask me to cite examples...how about I cite you the one example where I wasn't completely disappointed...the Futurama episode he was on. Other than that and Big Fan I would be hard pressed to remember anything good or bad that i saw him in.
Is it what I like, or why I like it?
This I will agree with. I thought Big Fan was a good movie, though, and I thought he was good in it.
Come on... if you're so down on the guy, you got to have a reason. Seeing him on stuff like Aqua Teen, Reno 911, Observe And Report... all of that stuff was great. I don't watch everything the guy does, but when I do see him he usually adds something.
I will concede that his being cast in the movie might bring in a few extra tickets that it otherwise wouldn't have, but I really have not gotten the feeling that his presence has enough clout to make any kind of real difference for the movie. Is that really a more likely scenario than the director/producers just enjoying the guys work and thinking he might be a good fit for the style of comedy that Reitman and Cody bring?
Again, I'm not giving anyone **** for disliking that type of movie, but I don't see any reason to bash Patton over it.
And I would still like to know what, exactly, makes me a sort of hipster, Doc. Is it what I like, or why I like it?
Yup.
But, without seeing any of those things, let me ask you, Is he playing himself or a reasonable facsimile in those instances? Like I tried to say...he is not really an actor. He is more of an extended cameo in most everything he does. Not trying to be dicky, it is what it is.
When he does act it is like in Big Fan where he just dumbs it down and plays a vomit. It always feels like he is acting. To call him a good actor is unfair to the people who earn a living doing that.
And he really does have that 'pavlov's dog' reaction in his fans. You proved that point yourself.
If you don't think that studios get that and use it then you are naive. It's stunt-casting at it's finest.
