All Things:Comedy

I sure as **** ain't going to argue on behalf of Diablo Cody. Jason Reitman, though? Thank You For Smoking? Up In The Air?

And Patton Oswalt? I'm not saying anything he's in is automatically great (especially if it's a TV show), but it counts for something, doesn't it?

At this point...he's diluted things so much that i am automatically suspiscious.

Yes. I have seen him in so many crappy bit parts that I no longer assume that his appearance in a movie means anything other than he wants a paycheck to buy...'alllll the ham'.

Give me examples. I know he does bit parts on TV sometimes (or did, does he still do that?), but what's he done to make you feel this way?

I missed these posts.

Turning any artists name into a cult sounding organization...yeah. Here's your beret.

It's not a cult, it's a religion. I may be the only person practicing it, but it's open for everyone else.

Who do you think they're aiming for by casting him in this movie?! COME ON MAN!!!

You think Patton Oswalt is going to draw people to this movie that wouldn't otherwise watch it? COME ON MAN!!!

It's not that he would bring in a completely different audience... it's that he would push it from a "maybe" to a "definitely".

Ah. Well, there might be some truth to that, but I have trouble believing that number would be all that big.

I think it's much more likely that he was cast because he's funny and not a bad actor.

Half right. C'mon, as an actor he's a good comedian. He ain't no Robin Williams. At best he plays Patton in some form with a variable volume control of 1-10, at worst he plays a character like in Big Fan, where he is some sort of personality deficient. I have a feeling that the second Patton could probably have filled the sandpaper fapping part in Human Centipede 2 just as well as the guy they got. But yeah, Naysay is right, for the time being, his name adds a certain clout to anything. And we all fall for it because we like the guy, but it rarely ever works out does it? Look at Craig Robinson. There is a guy who never disappoints. No matter how small the part. If he's in it i know i am gonna have a giggle. Patton not so much. You ask me to cite examples...how about I cite you the one example where I wasn't completely disappointed...the Futurama episode he was on. Other than that and Big Fan I would be hard pressed to remember anything good or bad that i saw him in.

This I will agree with. I thought Big Fan was a good movie, though, and I thought he was good in it.

Come on... if you're so down on the guy, you got to have a reason. Seeing him on stuff like Aqua Teen, Reno 911, Observe And Report... all of that stuff was great. I don't watch everything the guy does, but when I do see him he usually adds something.

I will concede that his being cast in the movie might bring in a few extra tickets that it otherwise wouldn't have, but I really have not gotten the feeling that his presence has enough clout to make any kind of real difference for the movie. Is that really a more likely scenario than the director/producers just enjoying the guys work and thinking he might be a good fit for the style of comedy that Reitman and Cody bring?

Again, I'm not giving anyone **** for disliking that type of movie, but I don't see any reason to bash Patton over it.

And I would still like to know what, exactly, makes me a sort of hipster, Doc. Is it what I like, or why I like it?

Not down on Patton at all as a comedian. I love him in that regard and I have to say he may be the best I've seen in a while. I couldn't get into Reno...ATHF I keep meaning to get the box sets cause I have not seen those either, and I got through the first 40 minutes of Observe & Report meaning to get back to it, yet I never have(yet). But, without seeing any of those things, let me ask you, Is he playing himself or a reasonable facsimile in those instances? Like I tried to say...he is not really an actor. He is more of an extended cameo in most everything he does. Not trying to be dicky, it is what it is. When he does act it is like in Big Fan where he just dumbs it down and plays a vomit. It always feels like he is acting. To call him a good actor is unfair to the people who earn a living doing that. And he really does have that 'pavlov's dog' reaction in his fans. You proved that point yourself. If you don't think that studios get that and use it then you are naive. It's stunt-casting at it's finest.

I've got no argument with any of that. For the most part what he does ARE actual cameos. In something like Observe And Report, he's an ******* boss with no redeeming qualities, but even that still feels a little Patton. Even if because he does that sort of character during parts of his act, too.

But other than Big Fan, when has he had the opportunity to step outside the Patton box?

Well, clearly our opinions on that film and his performance differ. I'm not about to recommend him for an oscar, but I thought he did a fine job.

And he really does have that 'pavlov's dog' reaction in his fans. You proved that point yourself.

How so? Because I think he's acquitted himself well? I must only think that because I'm a fan of his comedy?

Who is being accused of being a hipster here, again?

If you don't think that studios get that and use it then you are naive. It's stunt-casting at it's finest.

I don't see it. I see it as an added bonus, and I don't think everyone shares the same opinion of his acting abilities that you have. I'm still not sure exactly where you're basing your opinion on his acting abilities from, since all you've mentioned is Big Fan. But if you think everyone agrees with you... who's being naive?

I'm not even saying you're totally wrong. I just haven't seen any evidence to support what you're saying and it seems more likely to me that that isn't the case.

Are you sure you're not just trying to find a reason, any reason, to bash the film in question?

Nope. I don't need to manufacture a reason to bash a movie that I feel is going to be worthless to me. And we keep going around on this issue, I seem to be having the same problem with Naysay...yes, I believe in my opinions, and in order to do that I have to believe they are right. Just as you do. Are either one of us empirically right/wrong? No. For me, I firmly believe everything I posted about Patton and everything else. You disagree. That's why we have this forum. To both express our OPINIONS. In my eyes I cannot see why you would like this movie, just as you cannot see why I won't. It's ok to disagree. I am not trying to change your opinion. It is what it is, neither one of us has a MORE VALID point. Maybe I came at this with more venom than I needed to...Reitmans flicks bug me. And if you look at what we both posted we more or less agree on the Patton-as-a-cameo point. As far as the Pavlovs dog thing...I used to, as you said you still do, perk up every time I read that Patton was going to be in something. But, unlike you, I have tempered that initial reaction because he seldom lives up to the 'instant excitement' that I used to have. Personal preferences. No big deal son.

Now shut up and gimme some sugar.
