‘Taboo’ Review: Tom Hardy Takes on the World in FX’s Gritty New Drama

Yet so farTaboo — despite its name — is mostly, perhaps mercifully, restrained. It’s weird and occasionally overwrought, but violence is effectively minimal (particularly a scene where James fights off an attacker and adds a flourish at the end I won’t spoil), and sex is mostly suggested rather than shown, even though a great deal of time is spent in brothels. The show is smart, but not beyond comprehension, and it layers a foundation of adventure, mystery, and solid drama that is ambitious but never boring. Despite its desire to show the dark and gritty aspects of Georgian London, it also has a style to it that is all its own.

Rating: ★★★★ Very good

****ing 'ell...

Anyone catch Sunny? What a goddamned odd show.

Man Seeking Woman changed things up again. Well done.

What’s On Tonight: Tom Hardy Goes Dark And Weird For ‘Taboo’
http://uproxx.com/tv/whats-on-tonight-tom-hardy-taboo-fx/

Taboo (FX, 10:00 p.m.) — Tom Hardy’s dark, mystic, historical drama premieres tonight on FX. The show follows James Delaney, a man who’s done terrible things and with plans of vengeance, as he returns to London to follow his father’s legacy after a ten-year stint in Africa. There are some top-notch actors involved in this — many of them from Game of Thrones — but the verdict’s still out on whether Hardy and his father, who created the series, have a hit on their hands. There’s a whole lot of weird going on in tonight’s first episode and Hardy is trying out a new accent so those two things alone warrant a watch.

Is Tom Hardy's 'Taboo' Accurate? We Asked a Victorian Sex Expert: Renowned academic Sharon Marcus sheds light on Victorian sexual mores for FX's new show 'Taboo'

A lot of this Victorians were completely sexually repressed was started by people like Virginia Woolf and her cohorts, who like a lot of generations, had issue with the previous one. Nothing strange, except that I do believe that these two generations had a wider gap than most. Then again the Victorian age did stem several generations and Taboo, being set in the early 1800's is more on the cusp of the Victorian Age than in the middle of it.

Don't mind me, I am just being a nerd. More than usual. :fpalm:

But when one thinks about sexuality in a more historical sense, it's easier to feel like a scholar instead of just a perv. mhihi:

Holy Crap...I was intent on watching TABOO. I like Hardy, and BBC stuff(co produced with Fx), and I am a huge shill for Fx...but I was not expecting to be so drawn in after one hour.
Fascinating stuff, and we are only scratching the surface. Visually, it's stunning. And the music is eerie and perfect. And the damned titles. OOOOOh the bar is set high on this one from here on out.

I don't know if I was head over heels about the first ep like other peeps, but I did have a killer headache last night, haha. Either way, I like where Taboo is going and it is as visually stunning as the trailers made it look.

I think that empty empty void left in my soul after Penny Dreadful might now be filled. ;)
