On one hand, I'm like hell yessssssssssssss, give me more Watchmen! On the other hand, Zack Snyder's Watchmen film was pretty much perfect and I know I'll be comparing everything to that. The casting in that move was inspired. Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup and JEFFREY. DEAN. MORGAN. I don't know if it can get better than that.
Since that project fell apart, Warner Bros. announced they were making an R-rated animated version of the Alan Moore’s nihilistic-yet-hopeful superhero tale and now we’re here — Damon Lindelof, hot off the finale of The Leftovers, has been tasked with bringing Watchmen to the small screen by HBO, Variety reports. After multiple tries, HBO really wants this adaptation, it seems.
And if there’s anyone who can spearhead a weird tale full of heroes you’re not sure are worth rooting for with an overarching plot that’s open to interpretation, it’s Lindelof. He has some experience with such narratives.
It’s impossible to argue that TV is the best home for Watchmen. The movie felt far too truncated, despite the efforts of David Hayter (Solid Snake himself) and Alex Tse doing what they could to fit one of the densest stories in comic history to a single movie. If HBO allows Lindelof to explore the side plots like the Black Freighter and let the story breathe, this could end up as the definitive, proper, live-action adaptation we’ve always wanted. Hell, we might get two worthy adaptations if the animated version is up to snuff.
Of course, Lindelof could show up to Comic-Con and say: “All of the fans of the source material will ask for a coherent ending loyal to the book, and I’ll look down and whisper ‘no.'”
And the dude what plays Penguin on Gotham as Rorshach
Once upon a time, everyone was deeply invested in True Detective. Matthew McConaughy made us all believe in the Yellow King and the road to Carcosa was filled with yarn walls and obsessive internet theories. And then season two happened. Despite a strong cast, the magic couldn’t be replicated and it seemed like the HBO show was dead before it could find its feet again. So when it was announced that there would indeed be a third season, fans were more than a little skeptical. However, a recent casting rumor could be just what HBO needs for people to get back on board.
According to reports, Mahershala Ali is in early negotiations to play the lead in the upcoming season of True Detective. Yes, you can take a moment to scream excitedly and breathe into a paper bag. Ali is coming off of a huge year in 2016, gaining major career recognition with an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight and a stellar turn as the villain Cottonmouth in Netflix’s Luke Cage.
The creative minds behind True Detective have some serious ground to cover if they want to win back their audience, but casting talent like Ali is certainly a step in the right direction. Now they just have to write characters that actually seem like human beings again.
Kinda jumping to conclusions there a bit, no? We actually have no idea why he was cast. Call me naive, but isn't it possible that he was cast because they thought he was perfect for the role?Oscar Winner Mahershala Ali Could Be The Next Star Of ‘True Detective

Ok. At the risk of activating certain folks who feel they need to enlighten me...
So, this guy is the great white hope that will bring people back to True Detective. An actor who most people have never seen. WHY? Because he was in an art film that rode hot button topics into the consciousness of the Academy voters? And followed it up with a Marvel Villain role. One that could be argued, was stereotypical and exploitative?
So, somehow, this guy will save a franchise that had such unknowns as Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn? See, that kind of thinking is the very thing that defines white guilt and sets African Americans back even more than overt racism. This overreaction.
First of all...the press threw season 2 under the bus from the get go. Backlash from the surprise of the first season. Muddled writing and lack of unified vision did not help. If Ghandi, Jesus, and James Tiberious Kirk were starring it still would have failed. This unearned praise is insincere. After all, dude from that Tom Hanks flick was flavor of the month for a minute. So, if he were cast it would inspire Pizzolata to remember what made s1 so magical?
Piffle.

That's basically my point about the article. Talk about jumping the gun. Guy has two big credits**. Most people don't know him. I have never seen him in anything. They make it sound like the cast of season 2 was the cause of the failure. I just don't see it that way.
**apologies, apparently he has a good amount of supporting credits too.
Agreed. He was terrific.Mahershala Ali in House of Cards* played a huge supporting role (and went toe-to-toe with Kevin Spacey) and did an amazing job. So guy's got chops (and those thighs! whoot!) not worried about him being able to carry a new season of True Detective.
