All Things:HBO/CINEMAX

Mahershala Ali in House of Cards* played a huge supporting role (and went toe-to-toe with Kevin Spacey) and did an amazing job. So guy's got chops (and those thighs! whoot!) not worried about him being able to carry a new season of True Detective.

*Dex: tried and failed to watch season 5 (three episodes); admittedly watching for the costumes and decor and was unimpressed by Mrs. Underwood's choices. blah. If you say it gets good...I'll re-engage.

The original point I was making, and perhaps I did not state it well enough...Season 2 had a solid solid cast. And was crucified relentlessly. The author of the article was waxing about how Ali immediately restored credibility to the franchise. In other words Ali would somehow overcome material that Colin Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams could not. I just don't see that as a valid opinion. Especially considering Ali has primarily been a supporting cast member and has only carried one feature...which arguably received praise simply for it's subject matter and portrayal of characters that do not normally see that kind of attention.

Understood. But I think the writing (not the actors) was the failing for season two and no one had the heart to fully blame Nic. Season one took him years to write and it showed, comparatively season two was written on his iphone in the car on the way to the dentist.

JD: On the real, since you kind of watch everythiiing you should give season one House of Cards a spin. Ali is worth your time. =)

Is HBO’s ‘Confederate’ Already a Lost Cause?
http://collider.com/hbo-confederate-backlash-explained/#tv-series

sooooooooo the same folks who are crying for inclusion are complaining that 'white' guys are planning a show set in an alternate universe where the South won the civil war. And without seeing it or hearing the tone they are calling for its cancellation. Ok, so from now on...movies and tv need to be made by the same gender/race/sexual preference as their subject matter. Ok. Seems rational to me.

There's only an Amazon show where the Axis won WWII but no, this is taboo.

As a non-African American it would be difficult to weigh in on the statue of limitations for pain, understandably. And the ideology of the confederacy was never truly rejected by some, hence the concern. But, it is just a television show with an interesting concept that is taking a risk. More risks should be taken for the sake of art, not less.

But let's flesh this out:

Season one: 1865 -67 here's how everything's different;

Season two: 1868 bloody uprising;

Season three: cut to present day, plot twist, everything's the same...dun, dun dahhhh.

Seems like more of a short story idea than an episodic show to me. =) But I'm a jackass.

Ok, so...if it's strictly a matter of being uncomfortable with the issue of slavery, ok. But it's not about that. It's that these 'white guys' are telling a fictional story about an era in history, warts and all. Now...if they came out with a pro slavery theme...once again, ok, I get it. But to say they can't tell a story with racial elements is ridiculous. I imagine Crack is another issue that people should be inflammatory about. Especially on Fx's show Snowfall, which is basically a history of the drug. But that was created by a black man, so that's ok. And I don't watch it...but since they are playing from the angle that white people introduced it to hamstring black people...how is that not offensive, regardless of whether it's true or not?

Blech. So two guys with Game of Thrones money got a project rejected by Hollywood for sociopolitical reasons. Meh. If it helps, Chez Jay's will have half-price wells tonight for all that stand with D.B and David. <joke>

Sorry JD, long day and it's tough for me to get fired up about this stuff. Although, I appreciate all that you contribute.
