The American Film Market is just around the corner. It's busy time for Shock as we try to bring you advance word on genre projects that are in development or ready for distribution.

One title that has been on our radar is Voice from the Stone starring The Dark Knight's Maggie Gyllenhaal and Mads Mikkelsen, who has been in plenty of stuff but I prefer to refer to Nicholas Winding Refn's Valhalla Rising. Some classy artwork for the film floated our way today that I wanted to share.

Voice is directed by Eric D. Howell, who not only has a background in directing but in special effects and stunts as well.

Here's a synopsis: Voice from the Stone is the beautiful and haunting story of Verena, a solemn nurse drawn to aid a young boy named Jakob who has fallen silent since the untimely passing of his mother nearly a year ago.

Living with his father in a massive stone manor in central Italy, he not only refuses to speak, he seems to be under the spell of a malevolent force trapped within the walls.

As Verena's relationship with the captivating father and the enigmatic son grow, she becomes ensnared and consumed by the same austere force.

If she is to save the boy, and free herself, she must first face the phantom hidden inside the stone.

Open Letter to Horror Fans: Go See The Woman | CHUD.com

The Woman isn’t the horror movie to end all horror movies, but it is exactly what horror fans say they want. It isn’t a remake. It isn’t starring pretty kids from The CW. It doesn’t have glossy cinematography that makes it look like an expensive car commercial, or feature Black Eyed Peas songs thumping on the soundtrack. It is a small movie with big ideas and great execution. Attack the Block was great, but it more easily conforms to what studios want to gamble on — something full of action and snazzy FX. I loved Attack the Block, so I mean none of this negatively, but The Woman is the kind of film that never seems to get any kind of notable theatrical release. It is too small, too bizarre, too messy, too ****ed up. God bless Bloody Disgusting’s new distribution scheme for getting us this far. Now it is up to y’all. I know movies aren’t cheap these days. I know finding a theater and getting there can be a pain in the ass when Netflix Streaming’s warm embrace waits by the couch. I flake on more movies in the theaters than I care to admit. But a year from now, complaining about all the horror remakes and unoriginal dreck flooding the theaters if you didn’t go see The Woman is akin to complaining about who is elected President if you didn’t vote. You’re letting people who have very different tastes than you dictate what kind of content production companies, studios and distributors get behind, simply because they went to the theater and you stayed home (possibly even stayed home to illegally watch something like The Woman online, instead of at least waiting for it to hit Netflix).

I’d like more movies like The Woman to hit the big screen, and I’d like Lucky McKee to have an easier time finding money to make such movies. Let’s do this gang.

Oh, and make sure to stay through the credits. Nick Fury doesn’t show up, but some animated weirdness does. Though now that I’ve said that, I think the Woman would’ve made a better addition to The Avengers than Black Widow.

In failing to add depth to an impressive cast of characters, McKee has perhaps missed a trick or two, but the story he weaves is a solid one. With little to no humanity between them, it’s fair to assume that things wont end well for most of the characters. So you’ll be pleased to learn that they don’t, and if it’s brutality and bloodshed for all the family you’re after, you’ve come to the right place. The Woman isn’t always an easy watch, but it’s a captivating one none the less, and the final scenes are almost breathtaking.

Horror Bits: Troma Announces

Dropping temperatures and the tenth page of the calendar means it’s October. October means Halloween and Halloween means scary movies. And while movies like The Thing and Paranormal Activity 3 are in theaters, this October there’s even more news about horror movies coming in the future. After the jump, we’ve got into on the following:

Troma will make their next movie, Class of Nuke ‘Em High Part IV, in Spain and you can be a producer.
Fellow movie blog Bloody Disgusting is now making movies and their next film is an anthology called V/H/S featuring segments by Adam Wingard (You’re Next), Ti West (The Innkeepers) and more.
A new trailer for Saw II-IV director Darren Lynn Bousman‘s upcoming horror film 11-11-11 (above) has been released and it will be out November 11.
