Kino finds Redemption - Entertainment News, Film News, Media - Variety

Gotham-based indie Kino Lorber has pacted to become the exclusive distributor of the cult-horror library of Redemption Films for all media in the U.S. and Canada.

Under its new Redemption label, Kino Lorber is set to release up to 35 movies next year from U.K.-based Redemption on DVD, Blu-ray, VOD and digital, with broadcast airings also in the offing. Some titles will also play theaters at repertory houses and in midnight screenings.

Initial 2012 releases will include five of French helmer Jean Rollin's erotic vampire outings from the 1970s, including "The Nude Vampire," "Shiver of the Vampires," "The Iron Rose," "Lips of Blood" and "Fascination."

Kino's slate of Redemption pics will be released in re-mastered HD versions based on the 35mm negatives.

Others movies in the Redemption library include Wes Craven's 1985 "The Hills Have Eyes: Part 2," Martin Campbell's 1974 debut "The Sex Thief" and Italian helmer Mario Bava's 1970 "Hatchet for a Honeymoon."

Legendary Pictures Acquires Supernatural Actioner SPECTRAL

Do you like your Ghostbusters a little on the darker, more serious side? If so, writer Ian Fried’s Spectral might be right up your ghost-bustin’ alley. Legendary Pictures has acquired the feature rights in a six-figure deal. Spectral, pitched as a darker version of Ghostbusters with a more serious tone, features a contemporary, militaristic approach to fighting supernatural creatures. When evil ghosts take over Manhattan, a special ops group is brought in to take them down. Fried is an up-and-coming writer who turned in a 2010 Black List screenplay, The Ever After Murders, which featured fairy tale characters investigating murder scenes. More recently, Fried received a lot of attention for his treatment of Gaslight, a serial-killing Gothic tale featuring Florence Nightingale and Jack the Ripper.

Though the script is set in Manhattan at present, Heat Vision’s report cautions that locations and details may change as writing progresses. The report also remarks on Fried’s unique presentation of his material. The writer put together a “rip reel” with clips of various movie scenes to simulate what the final tone, pacing and visual aesthetic should be. Looks like it did the trick.

After traveling the fest circuit all year, IFC Midnight will unveil Kill List On Demand on January 4, 2012 before going wide on February 3rd. But if you want to see it on the big screen sooner, it plays at the Walter Reade Theater Thursday, October 27 at 9:15pm as part of the Film Society Lincoln Center’s Scary Movies Festival.

Meanwhile, rising star Elizabeth Olsen gets her first horror flick out of the way in “Silent House.” Premiering at Sundance earlier this year, the remake of the Uruguayan film “La casa muda,” from co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau centers on a young woman who goes to fix up the family summerhome only to discver *GASP* it may be haunted. Not exactly the most original story, but with Olsen now firmly on the Hollywood radar, this one will certainly attract some interest. Open Road Films and Liddell Entertainment have wisely slated the movie for a March 9, 2012 release date, undoubtedly hoping the actress comes in for a nomination for “Martha Marcy May Marlene” so that they can ride the railcoats of the ensuing publicity she’ll receive.

BD Horror News - AFM '11: W2 Acquires 'The Theatre Bizarre 2' and Finances Anthology Sequel!

W2 Media, the Los Angeles and Vancouver based film distribution, financing and international sales company, announced today that it will co-finance and distribute The Theatre Bizarre 2 - the sequel to Severin Films and Mataluna Productions' gripping horror anthology The Theatre Bizarre, executive produced by Daryl J. Tucker.

W2 Media is releasing The Theatre Bizarre (review) theatrically in the U.S. in January 2012 and plans to release the sequel in January 2013. W2 Media is also handling worldwide sales for both films.

Severin Films and France's Metaluna Productions co-produced the original The Theatre Bizarre, a modern horror anthology inspired by the over-the-top shocks of Paris' early 20th century 'Theatre du Grand Guignol,' featuring films by directors Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini & Richard Stanley.

Generating major buzz throughout the horror festival circuit and even causing audience members to pass out during screenings, The Theatre Bizarre is comprised of seven separate and disturbing chapters from seven cutting-edge genre directors enlisted from around the world and granted total creative freedom.

Los Angeles fans of horror fiction will be treated to a rare opportunity as Thomas Jane and Damian Maffei present and star in the world premiere reading engagement of By Bizarre Hands and Suckerfish. The two will be joined onstage by Kaitlin Doubleday (Hung, CSI, Brothers and Sisters) and newcomer Karina Elias at this free event, which takes place at The Steve Allen Theater on Saturday, November 12th at 8pm.

By Bizarre Hands is a one act play by award winning author Joe R. Lansdale. The play tells the tale of a preacher going door to door, finding a little girl and her mother on Halloween, and their realization that the preacher isn’t exactly who he claims to be. By Bizarre Hands will be directed by renowned novelist/filmmaker Terrill Lee Lankford and produced by Kasey Lansdale.

Suckerfish, the classic dark existential play by W.T. Underwood, will be presented under Thomas Jane’s direction and Kasey Lansdale’s production. Suckerfish tells the tale of Hank, a Member of Society who merely wishes to be rescued from the grips of a city street corner and the epic homeless man, police officer, and dwindling grip on reality that stand in his way.

This is a staged reading, a unique opportunity to see the raw creation of this theatrical event in a relaxed environment, and a chance to be involved in something during its creative development.

With just 99 seats available, this will be an intimate gathering with a feedback session to follow.

We sadly report, for those who haven't heard, the unforgettable Jewel Shepard has been diagnosed with breast cancer. And due to limited health insurance coverage, she is forced to raise a considerable sum of money to pay for the treatment. But this is a great opportunity for us to band together as a horror community and help one of our own. And you can get some pretty cool swag out of it, too.

Jewel, best known for her role as Casey in the classic 1985 zombie masterpiece The Return of the Living Dead, has thought up a great way to raise funds to help pay for her cancer treatment. Jewel and the good people at Dark Delicacies have set up a fundraising page where Jewel is selling some great signed photos and artwork of herself. And tell me, in this day and age where zombies have suddenly become the monster of choice, who wouldn't want a signed photo from the woman who starred in one of the greatest zombie films of all time?

Blu-Ray Review: Wake Wood | Geeks of Doom

in the past, but this new review gives me another chance to point it out. Nice little movie.

Wake Wood isn’t a new or unique film, not at all. People go to small friendly towns with deep dark secrets in movies all the time, just like the dead are often risen. But it doesn’t have to be new and unique to be impressive, either. Hell, what is unique these days? Most movies take existing cinematic components and find new and exciting ways to use and present them, and that’s just the way of the world.

It offers up the highly contradictory combination of a lovely, serene, and picturesque setting and an dark and unsettling premise that observes human morality and the things we do or are willing to do in extraordinary situations. The movie is sort of a mixture of Hot Fuzz and Pet Sematary, which is a strangely interesting mixture. The ritual necessary to bring back the dead is disturbing, but few of us could condemn someone for wanting to see their loved ones again, if only for a few short days. And that’s one of the film’s strong points: you can’t help but put yourself in these people’s place and wonder if you would do the same thing.

(Banana 101.5) Banana 101.5 spoke with Spider from Powerman 5000 about horror films, new music, his MTV show 'Death Valley,' and the possibility of a film "collaboration" with his brother Rob Zombie.
You have a new TV show on MTV called 'Death Valley,' how would you describe it for those who haven't tuned in yet? It's a horror comedy and it basically follows this group of cops called the Undead Task Force, and it's their job to contain the recent uprising of vampires, zombies, and werewolves in the San Fernando Valley. It's just completely over the top comedy and gore — so you're sort of laughing your ass off one minute and then scared to death and grossed out the next. A lot of people simply describe it as a 'Reno 911′ meets 'Walking Dead' kind of a thing. I feel slightly different than that but I suppose that is a concise way to put it.

It's very much a genre fans wet dream. You've got guns, comedy, zombies, vampires, werewolves, hot lesbians — I can see why you fought for so long to get this show on the air. Yeah look, it really was me sitting at home not finding anything to watch on TV and going, "You know what? I have to make a show that I want to watch." And you know this was over six years ago that I came up with this idea after I moved to the San Fernando Valley in L.A. and decided this would be the perfect backdrop for a monster invasion. I ran around town with a camera and a couple of friends and 500 bucks for a budget and made this test trailer of 'Death Valley' — a very early version of it — and that eventually got to MTV and they really loved it and championed the idea and here we are with a real TV show on the air.

BD Horror News - Bruce Campbell Talks 'Evil Dead' Remake!

Speaking with TV Guide, Bruce Campbell just dropped a few nuggets about The Evil Dead remake.

Per Campbell, "We are going to remake it. The first one. And people are a little iffy about that [but] we wanted to remake a movie with better effects and we're better at telling stories now... There's no 'Ash' character and that pisses people off [but] we didn't want to have the direct comparison. I wouldn't want to put an actor in that position."

The upcoming Diablo Cody (Young Adult, Jennifer's Body, Juno) penned Fede Alvarez (Ataque De Panico) directed remake/reboot does not currently have a release date. But we'll let you know when it does!

Campbell doesn't completely shut down the idea of a cameo though. Check out the video after the jump!
