All Things:Science Fiction/Fantasy

Anyone else notice, in the trailer for Godzilla above, the use of the sound effect from 2001 - A Space Odyssey? You know...the one that's associated with the monolith??

Yep. This one:

Still...I'll go see it. Especially if Walter White is in it.

Requiem For Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs & Orchestra by Gyorgy Ligeti

I'm not denying that I'm a nerd, but I did have to look up the title on Amazon.

Furthermore... a live performance is cool and kind of hilarious:

Pics or it didn't happen.

How about an epilogue?

You kids...

Look...as long as I don't walk out of the theater in tears, like I did opening night on that Broderick/Emmerich blasphemy...it's a win. I like that Godzilla does not seem like a character as much as an unstoppable earth killing force of nature. I hate to bring this up since SOOOOO many people hated it, but that is the one thing that Cloverfield did so well. Establishing the monster as just something so big as to defy the human minds ability to take it all in. I highly recommend, if you haven't seen it, Edwards' MONSTERS, because, despite it's flaws it also is a reactionary viewpoint of what it would be like if everything you knew simply made NO sense anymore. I always think of the last 5 of The Mist...and thise gigantic walking nightmares...if you saw that how in God's name would you be able to fathom it? I had the privelege of being a 7 year old boy in New York when they were filming the Jeff Bridges King Kong remake, and the gigantic Kong was laying at the foot of the Twin Towers. To this day, it was the most epic thing I have ever seen. Between looking up at those giant buildings and the HUGE scale of the whole thing, well...it was a lot to take in. Just saying...it really looks like they have captured the devestation that would be inflicted.

Has Godzilla been rated yet? Because my kid is DYING to see it now...

By the way...where'd the Robocop stuff go? Wife and I saw it on Monday and liked it a lot!! We were hoping it'd be okay to take the kid to another time (she LOVED the trailers), but it's not. Too violent. Not so much blood and guts as the original, but there's some stuff that could be unsettling to a pre-teen. Michael Keaton was good in it. Gary Oldman was AWESOME as usual.

Most of the pre release stuff was in the REMAKES thread. Post release has been pretty quiet. Dexter weighed in in the LAST MOVIE WATCHED thread(he liked it too)...but there hasn't been much otherwise. Glad you liked it, general opinion from what I am reading is that they bring up a lot of intersting questions/angles but don't really resolve them. Most folks didn't hate it, but weren't shouting from the rooftops either. I would imagine more people will give it a try once it hits the dvd market.

Updated: Rodan, Shobijan Discovered In 'Godzilla' Trailer?! -

Astounding Beyond Belief has found one helluva potential easter egg in the brand new Godzilla trailer.

If you were to go frame-by-frame through the monster?s destruction, what you?d see what could be are the infamous 6-inch tall Shobijan (The Mothra Twins)! For those unacquainted, the Shobijin (Japanese for ?small beauties?) are two tiny priestesses or fairies that accompany Mothra, and who also speak for her. ? Wiki Some say the footage around the :30 mark are just firemen, but who knows?

In addition, it was pointed out to us by BD reader ?Avery? and io9 that Rodan and possibly the half cyborg Gigan may have a brief appearance.

Click the link for the more tenuous photos supporting the Rodan/Gigan theories. I KNOW there is more than one monster in the movie, and I am fairly sure the footage I saw @ SDCC confirmed Mothra, but I don't expect the twins to be 6' tall. I could see a callback to them, but this movie isn't going to go as off the rails as old 'zilla flicks did. I could see Rodan, but Gigan...we are not at the point where a half cyborg or MechaGodzilla is ready for an appearance.
