The director recently took part in a somewhat testy conversation with The Huffington Post, where he revealed that an "Unbreakable 2" is "getting closer, by the way." So, what has been the hold up? Well, according to Shyamalan, every single one of his films is a type of therapy that "represent where I am" in his life. And that's the nut he's been trying to crack with the brewing sequel.
"I want it to happen, too [but]....'It's such a fun thing' is squashing my ability to find the thing that's connecting me with it... So, slowly I'm getting a story in my head that I feel like is able to tell what I'm feeling right now," he explained.
But here's the thing -- Shyamalan has had this idea since way back in 2010. At the time, he squashed notions of an "Unbreakable" follow-up, saying he had developed his idea into a standalone movie that would be part of the Night Chronicles horror franchise he was producing that seemed to stall out after the poorly received "Devil."
"I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to 'Unbreakable' for one of the Night Chronicles," he revealed in September 2010. "It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for 'Unbreakable,' and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, 'I'll make this the second flick.' I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, 'This could be a standalone movie.' I'll just say it: the third Night Chronicles movie is what would have been the sequel [to 'Unbreakable']. So now I need to come up with a new idea."
Disney is finally pushing ahead with their follow up to Tim Burton's billion-dollar-earning "Alice In Wonderland." It's a bit shocking it took them nearly three years to get the ball rolling, but now it's picking up speed, and James Bobin is the man in early talks for the gig. He's already proved to Disney that he can do franchises, having successfully rebooted "The Muppets" and currently directing "Muppets...Again!" and we suppose he'll meet the approval of Johnny Depp, who we can only imagine is the no brainer to return.
Meanwhile, the long-gestating "Bad Santa 2" seemed to be on track last year when Steve Pink was signed up rewrite and direct the movie. But now folks behind the movie are giving those jobs to "Entourage" creator Doug Ellin. He's writing the movie for sure, but directing will depend on what's going on with that "Entourage" movie, as a script has been handed, but no word yet on when it might actually shoot.
Peter Farrelly on the news that Warner Bros didn’t want to make the movie:
“There’s been a lot of press about how Warner Bros doesn’t want to make it, and it has nothing to do with that. In fact, it was originally released by New Line, and New Line now is owned by Warner Bros — so it never really was a Warner Bros thing. And we want …. long story short, we’re going to another studio and their have been negotiations and thats whats held this thing up, we’ve been negotiating with two different studios, Warner Bros and New Line, about how to get it out of there.”
Peter Farrelly on the screenplay for Dumb and Dumber To:
“I sent you the script. I was hoping you’d read it so I wouldn’t have to sit here and tell you how good it is. But I’m telling you its a little masterpiece. It’s so good, I think it makes the first one better.” .. “We took two years to work on this script. We didn’t want to do it unless it was as good as the first one. We just didn’t want to tarnish the first one, and you know, we didn’t do Dumb and Dumberer — that was done by — which is one reason they [WB?] didn’t want to do this because they did that and it didn’t work.”
Its strange how Peter tries to dispute the reports that Warner Bros didn’t want to make the movie and then later says the words “which is one reason they didnt want to do this”.
Peter Farrelly on the story for Dumb and Dumber To:
“We start in Rhode Island and we pick up today and explain what they’ve been doing the last 18 years. And there is something that happens and we get off to the races quickly.” … ”When you see Dumb and Dumber To, Dumb and Dumber 1 is better because you learn things in Dumb and Dumber To that you knew in Dumb and Dumber 1 but hadn’t put together. For instance, not giving away too much, Harry always gets revenge. ” … “And when you see the second one, it has a thing that you won’t see coming , and at the end of it, you’ll be like “oh my god, I just fell for the exact same thing.”
?We had a guy come up to us this year,? said Farrelly. ?He said, ?Listen, I heard you?re going to do a sequel to Dumb & Dumber. I want to be son of Seabass.? That was Milan Lucic.? I looked at him and thought, ?You know what? That?s not a bad idea.? Because he looks a lot like Cam, plays a lot like Cam. I?ve got to convince my brother. We need to figure out a way to make it work.?
