All Things:SHOWTIME

Seriously, can we please end John Clare/The Creature's storyline now. Such a sweet sweet man...to find peace, and you just KNOW it will end in horrifyingly heartbreaking tragedy. Please no, I can't take it.

Don't forget to check/fix/set the PVR... PD is a 2 hour finale on Sunday.

He'll probably have to be the one who ends up saving his "creator" right? Imagine if Lily gets out, goes on a rampage, and perhaps kills his wife/son? Yikes.

Sadly, I think he is going to be the engine for his wife and child's demise. Or maybe he takes the dying kid to Victor to 'bring him back'. Either way, it's just gonna suck.

Well... might want to avoid the Showtime YouTube channel after that 2 parter tonight. :(

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I totally assumed there'd be a season 4 of Penny Dreadful. Oh my god.

I mean, it was a pretty ****ing perfect finale, but I want more!!!! I ****ing adore this show and now I feel like crying.

Unexpected news to say the least, and slightly illogical reasoning reading several of the interviews I've seen this morning. Poor ratings. But the Showtime exec loved the show. The rushed final episodes setting up things that could've been Season 4. The introduction of a comic. They should've just pre-announced it was ending.

After some reflection, I take back what I said about it being a perfect finale. Not perfect. Not at all. And now I'm mad.

NO resolution on Dracula. Dude just peaced out. Ethan never found out what happened to Brona. Uncool. And then we got like 2 minutes of Vanessa, THE MAIN CHARACTER, in the series ****ing finale and it was just "kill me. I'm done fighting." That's sooooooo not Vanessa. The big finale should have been her fighting Dracula and killing him after all of the suffering he caused her.

Now I'm so mad. This show was soooooooooo perfect and the finale was so unsatisfying.

I have not seen the last hour. And I am trying to avoid spoilers. But I am extremely disappointed that one of my favorite shows has ended. Should have seen the writing on the wall when some of my sites were questioning why there was no word of a renewal a few weeks ago. I will miss the music, the amazing visuals, Sir Malcolm, and the wonderful Universal Classic Monster universe they were creating. The people in charge of Universal's(?) movie version of same could take some hints from what was established here.

R.I.P.
Penny Dreadful
2104-2016

UPDATE:

?I created Penny Dreadful to tell the story of a woman grappling with her faith, and with the demons inside her. For me the character of Vanessa Ives is the heart of this series. From the beginning, I imagined her story would unfold over a three-season arc, ending with Vanessa finally ? and triumphantly ? finding peace as she returns to her faith. To have had fans that have embraced us so passionately has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. This has been a very personal project for me and I will be forever grateful to have worked with the incredible cast led by Eva, Josh and Tim, our amazing Irish crew, and with our wonderful partners at SHOWTIME and Sky.?

While I agree that the finale was...abbreviated, I am satisfied with how it ended. There are more stories to tell...and in my mind they will always be there. mmmcammy, while I feel your angst at Vanessa's decision, it was the only thing that made sense. She could not ever be a 'normal' person. And another season with her 'soul in peril' may have proved to have been too much. As far as how satisfying, I come down somewhere in the middle. Dracula was defeated...although not vanquished outright. The Creature, I suppose, found some measure of peace. Victor found his humanity. And like immortals, Brona and Dorian's stories are there waiting to be told. Maybe someday.

You know...upon reflection there was a real sense of goodbye this season, starting with Mr Lyle, who I assume is having About and Costello like shenanigans in the mummy's tomb. Maybe the other plot threads were introduced to distract from the goodbye. Too bad really, I kinda dug the Van Helsing type gal they brought in.

Btw, Brona's confession about her daughter. Oofa. That was rough.

So was it on record earlier that Penny Dreadful was going to end or was it just revealed? I am confused. And I haven't started on the third season, haha, but have been pretty good at avoiding spoilers thanks to looking away and being too drunk to remember what I accidentally read the next day.

But anyhooow, what will fill the creepy Victorian era need in my life now?

I guess there was some speculation since there hadn't been any renewal news, but I think most people expected it to be renewed since Showtime execs always gushed about the show. I totally wasn't expecting the cancellation, so after it aired, Showtime was like "yep, that was it. sorry."
I kinda wish I had known beforehand that was the series finale so I could prepare myself.

I have read a lot that Logan started wrapping it up mid second season. I don't think the ratings were great, but I'm pretty sure, despite the costs, Showtime would have gone one more. There was a dedicated fan base and the critics, at one point, loved the show. Plus, Showtime is/has lost a few other shows too...

I do like that they are also saying that they gave no notice of the end because that's how life really works. So there is a bit of beauty in that.

True but god damn (no pun intended) it also felt like a gut punch. Did anyone else start to tear up when the words "the end" came on screen?
