E. L. Doctorow Was 84

E. L. Doctorow, a leading figure in contemporary American letters whose popular, critically admired and award-winning novels — including “Ragtime,” “Billy Bathgate” and “The March” — situated fictional characters in recognizable historical contexts, among identifiable historical figures and often within unconventional narrative forms, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. He was 84 and lived in Manhattan and Sag Harbor, N.Y.

The cause was complications from lung cancer, his son, Richard, said.

Nova Pilbeam, 95, Star Of Two Hitchcock Films In 30s, Who Slipped From View In The 50s

Nova Pilbeam was a great lost figure of British cinema – lost because she last appeared on screen in 1948, and on stage in 1951. Thereafter, she lived in obscurity in north London. Yet she had been a Hitchcock blonde, playing leading roles in two of his pre-Hollywood films, The Man Who Knew Too Much and Young and Innocent. With the wartime death of her husband, Pen Tennyson, this famous face faded into private seclusion. And like a British Greta Garbo, she evidently preferred it to be that way.

'Rowdy' Roddy Piper Dies at 61 From Cardiac Arrest

Well, crap.

On a general level, there's no denying Roddy Piper is one of the absolute greatest pro wrestlers in history.

On a personal level, Roddy Piper was one of the main reasons I got into pro wrestling.
Roddy Piper was one of the main reasons I got out of pro wrestling and into college.
Roddy Piper was indirectly for me meeting one of the absolute best friends and greatest people I will ever know.

Rest in Peace, Hot Rod.

These deaths are starting to hurt more and more as we see our family members we grew up with pass on. RIP Rowdy.

My all time favorite wrestler to boot... Looks like the Undertaker moved up a spot to the living wrestler list...

Requiescat in pace

I am sooooo bummed right now. Hot Rod was my second favorite wrestler, only behind the Hitman.

And what's it gonna take for all these wrestlers to go see a doctor?

RIP.

Yeah, this blows. All the legends are passing. Roddy was one of my favorite bad guys.

RIP.

Piper was a real tough one for me to accept. I used to watch him when he was first breaking into the business. Many of his early matches were from the old Olympic Auditorium in LA. My dad, had early onset Parkinsons, and watching sports on TV was one of the few things we could do together. Every Wednesday was wrestling from the Olympic and Roddy was one of the last dating back to those days. Even then, he had star written all over him. RIP.

For me, the golden age of 'wrasslin' died yesterday. Even if you didn't dig the whole game, Rowdy Roddy Piper transcended that. His wonderful rants, the leather jacket and kilt, and the 'come as you are' performances in They Live/Hell Comes to Frogtown/etc. By all accounts a true blue GOOD guy. The world just seems a little smaller, and a little less colorful today. Rowdy Roddy Piper...thank you. And...you will truly be missed.
