well that game by Byfield shuts me the hell up for a while. The assist was such a dominating play, if he can be that player - I get it, you won't hear Stutzle's name from me again.... for a while.

he's twenty years old with under 100 pro games spread out over three seasons. He is absolutely going to have some more slumps. I just hope he can keep from having any more injuries or illnesses this season.

Something that isn’t being talked about is how much of an advantage his physical size can be. Monday vs. the Oil he got his bell rung with a solid should to shoulder check from Zach Hyman. If Byfield isn’t 6’ 5” 200+ he probably can’t just shake that hit off. Hyman caught him with his head down for just a split second and while the check did put him on his ass and caused him to miss a shift or two he really wasn’t any worse for wear.

Obviously you don’t want to take hits like that regularly but it’s good to see how sturdy he is and that as he puts on more weight his physical presence will be an even bigger weapon in his arsenal.

sort of related, but in that game the Oilers broadcast was talking about him and mentioned they had heard he had lost about 20lbs during that last sickness before going down to the Reign. That's an insane amount of weight, and a difficult amount to completely regain in the short term over the course of playing games.

It also shows how much work he currently has to put in to keep the weight on at his age and calorie burn rate. Speaks volumes about both his dedication and discipline.

Did we ever get any sort of report on what illness caused him to lose such a massive amount of weight? I do wonder if that number has been conflated a bit to buy some extra ‘understanding’ on why he’s been slow to re-acclimate, but what in the hell did the kid have? A 3 week stomach virus?!

Cholera with a touch of Bubonic Plague and a hint of dysentery.

having lost 20lbs, it might have been more than a hint of dysentery...

He definitely will, I'm just saying, I have only seen hints of plays like that first assist - to see him actually do it in the NHL gives me some more concrete hope in this kid. He can do it, he needs to learn (and grow) how to do it consistently

I think if the Kings had a bit of a different goaltender situation he might be worth taking a chance on, but with $5m already committed to Cal though 24/25 I don't think the Kings would be ready to add Markstrom too and tie that much up in goaltending (likely not top tier goaltending at that) during what should be the start of our "contending" years. Maybe an even swap of Petersen for Markstrom may work, but the Kings may be best served by resigning Copley, eating some of Petersen's salary to move him and drafting or trading for a solid goaltending prospect to be our future starter for hopefully the long term.

I went to the Ontario Reign vs Coachella Valley Firebirds game after Christmas in the desert, Petersen gave up 7 goals and the Reign lost 7-6. BTW, great arena in Palm Desert

Ok ive been drinking pretty well today, but im not re sign Copley drunk

Haha cheers to that, but would you resign him sober? We could likely get him cheap (making $825k this year) and worst case he would be a solid backup.

Yes, I would be willing to sign Copley as a solid backup. JQ is a UFA after this season and likely retires. Perhaps if we can find a way to trade Petersen and get at least some of that ridiculous salary off the books that would help free up some cap space. I thought Flake would have learned not to back himself into a corner and pay a guy who is not on the team similar to the Phaneuf deal, but apparently not.

Go Kings!!

What’s the alternative? VAN apparently listening on just about anyone, but Demko would take a whole lot of assets needed for LD and not sure they ever trade him to the Kings. Similarly but even more uncertain, Freidman wonders often how deep AZ is willing to go in its fire sale and trade Vejmelka. That’d likely be worth what it takes to give up, but zero proof AZ is even willing.

Don’t see the good pending UFAs like Jarry getting that far.

BUF has some intriguing goalie prospects, including Devon Levi who is still playing college and hasn’t signed yet. A good college prospect unsigned by BUF - what could go wrong? But really, any of those prospects through sign or trade would still be some seasons away.

I’m not getting caught up in the all the comparisons with Copley who’s anyone from Sean Burke to Felix Potvin to Tim Thomas, but a small sample size though it is his play has been so head and shoulders above Quick and Peterson this year how can you not resign him at this point for the immediate term? Again barring anything Blake knows that we don’t about a trade. But as a fan, I don’t know what else you do.
