All this fan-hate for Iafallo from the beer-leaguers despite the fact that the Kopi prefers to have him on his wing over anybody in the lineup. Let me guess: Kopitar doesn't know what he's talking about. Seriously you guys...wake up and smell the butt-hurt. Iafallo is the type of guy teams need and that's why the people who know what they're doing haven't traded him.

Some of you will never grasp the concept of character...guess what that says about you.

Iafallo is a valuable defensive forward with decent offensive productivity. Very good utility winger but his 4M cap hit for 3 more season could squeeze Trevor Moore off the roster as he hits free agency in 23/24. If you have to choose between Moore and Iafallo I think the Kings would be better served by keeping Moore. He just has a bit more upside especially if Iafallo gets moved down the lineup and isn't playing 1st line 5 on 5 minutes.

There's no need to move on from Iafallo just yet.

How about this, just to throw a monkey wrench in the lines thinking...yes, I'm moving Kopi to 3C

Danault, Arvi, Moore
Byfield, Fiala, Kempe
Kopitar, Iafallo, Kaliyev
Lizotte, Grundstrom, Kupari, Vilardi (pick two)

Iafallo was paid before Kempe and Moore had breakout seasons. Their progress coupled with his cap hit (and stagnation) makes him expendable to make way for a top 4 LD.

Once Kaliyev or whomever actually earns a top six spot then Moore or Arvy can slide down. Don’t see that happening this season. In due time.

Also worth noting Fiala has turned in 12%+ shooting rate the last three seasons in a row. Last season was his career high in goals as well as shots. Bodes well.

Guess you didn?t see the black hole team come one win away from going to the conference finals, WITHOUT Doughty.

And we?re not taking Byfield for a 32 year old center. We need to move assets off of our list. Too many, not enough roster spots.

They lost a first round series that they could have won.

What on Earth are you crowing about? Almosts? That's pretty desperate. They had plenty of opportunity to win that series but couldn't close it. That's not something to be proud of, especially given that Fiala doesn't address their lack of board play, physicality, penalty kill or inability of their PP to move pucks beyond a snail's pace.

Fiala displayed plenty of dynamism last year in his coming out party. His hands down low are terrific. But he attacks the net off the rush, not off the cycle. He won't get the same scoring opportunities with Kopitar, and he is a below average defensive winger about to get a ton of shifts in defensive spots. I wouldn't expect more than 50-60 points if he gets lined up with Kopitar. Hopefully he gets a chance with a more attack-minded center who gives and go's and thinks aggressively. The safety first stuff will be a challenge for him.

This is pretty much the key here. Kopitar needs to have a lesser workload, especially in regular season, as he's emptying his tank. And how else to achieve that other than giving him a bit more checking role and PP2+PK2? Todd can use him to create certain mismatches then, too. Anyway, the boat of Kopitar as #1C should sail away. All 4 lines are talented and can have their workloads very nicely spread in a way that enables high tempo hockey and offensive threat throughout all 4 of them. For regular season they each can get 12-14 min/game ES time, which is decent for the kids on the 4th line, too, and keeps the top guys fresh.

The key will be improving the PP.

That's why you DON'T put him on Kopitar's wing. Let's hope Todd is aware of that, too.

Fiala's style of play certainly doesn't line up with Kopitar's, and wasting nearly $8 mil per on an aggressive, attacking talent on a line that will get matched up in checking situations all night is NOT what this team needed to improve. Fiala will score in the 50s here playing to similar results as Moore and Arvidsson.

If they want to get better for the now, you address the blueline. If you want to contend, you take your lumps while the kids get better. This just fattens the middle of the roster while the weaknesses weren't addressed.

Oh, and Kaliyev now knows he has no shot at top 6 minutes for years to come. Gotta feel great to be a prospect here, maybe you can get a few 4th line minutes now and then if you don't ever make any mistakes. Hell you can get a good seat to watch both the Kings and Reign lose winnable series without playing. Again.

Imagine having the leagues best prospect pool and only generating a couple of 4th liners two years later.

Imagine being a rookie with decent-ish season and expecting to have your top 6 role all but reserved for you down the line.
Imagine being a rookie with decent-ish season and now seeing the two finalists this year and thinking "Yeah, we can compete with that with me in the top 6".

The kids need to be aware of the fact that the Kings are looking to compete now and Todd needs to be aware there is no more "Top 6" in the traditional sense where the top 2 lines get by far the most ice time, and give out this ice time in large enough quantities throughout all 4 lines in ES in regular season.

Last year Byfield, Vilardi, Kupari and Kaliyev all had a chance to show the Kings don't need to add offensive talent to this team and they failed to deliver at a high enough rate for that. Yes, essentially all of them were rookies, but they can't possibly think they are owed a top 6 role after last season. This means they will have to compete and work extra hard for the spots. That's good. And if some of them perform really well, the Kings can then recycle certain pieces to accommodate for that. They can trade Iafallo, maybe Kempe if he plateaus and one of the kids really steps up.

This wasn't a complete rebuild where you trade away most of your veteran presence. This was a retool. Any kid here thinking he's going to get a lot of minutes without proving himself first is looney...and doesn't have the right mentality. So you trade him.

Watchinf Fiala's highlights, I like the kid. Speed, drives the net and isn't afraid to shoot the puck.

May as well complete the picture . . .

Kopitar Kempe Fiala
Danault Moore Arvidsson
Iafallo Kupari Kaliyev
Byfield Lizotte JAD

Hey dude, still brining the heat I see. Well this is an oversimplification (that is June approriate) that you'll hate: Kopitar loves to pass, now he has someone who loves to shoot and CAN FINISH.

If I'm the Wild I'm happy as hell we get something for a guy we could not re-sign. At the very least they get a 1st round pick even if Faber doesn't work out.

If I'm the Kings I get a guy that can get us some goals and he's relatively young. Good job Blake.

As to who "wins" the trade: irrelevant. If Fiala scores goals the Kings EXPECT from him it doesn't matter whether Brock Faber becomes the next Bobby Orr. The Kings got what they wanted. It's like Mike Richards...a player LONG GONE from the Kings but we got what was needed from him regardless of how well Schenn and Simmonds have played since. Trades that are bad are not because of the players you moved but because of what you get in return. The Kings once traded a 1st round pick for Richard Martin. Sure Buffalo got a good player at the draft but Martin only played 5 (that's right...FIVE) games for the Kings. It was one of the great blunders in Kings' history.

I think you undersell Kopis success rate on transition goals. I'll freely admit I've kvetched more than once at an entry by Anze that ends up with him peeling into the corner and setting up the low to high move. However in 2012 and 2014 the majority of his points came from transition rush goals through Brown and Gaborik.
Kempe also benefited from the spring plays last season. I'm not saying I expect Fiala to outscore Kopi if paired with him, but I can see a world where he's going to get transition goals.
Regarding the prospects getting top six time... Well they want it, they're going to have to earn it. Play better than Moore for starters.

I 100% agree. My only concern at this point (and its a minor concern) is that while he's on the rise, Moore's only had one very good season. If Iafallo becomes THE cap concern that threatens Moore's status with the team, and Moore continues to improve, you absolutely move Iafallo.

But I don't see that being what the iHate is about. There are a few here who simply can't grasp the concepts of business, team morale, individual character and leadership. All these things play into Iafallo being where he is. If he comes available GMs will be calling Blake, despite what the iHaters might think.

After browsing this thread….

My thoughts: back in my day, when posting line combinations, we listed them in order from left, center, to right. Get off my lawn, etc.

One more link Really good article here:

‘A highlight goal every night’: Wild riding high with Kirill Kaprizov and Kevin Fiala

“He’s been incredible,” Guerin said. “Honestly, I haven’t seen that many guys go on a tear like that. I think for Kevin, too, the way this year started, he really struggled for 30 games, and then (Matt Boldy) came on the scene and they created a chemistry with (Freddy) Gaudreau. But (Fiala’s) just been a one-man wrecking crew.”

One turning point to Fiala’s season came Jan. 8 against the Washington Capitals. He took three penalties in a 4:27 stretch. Despite nine players being out of the lineup, coach Dean Evason benched him in the third period. During a TV timeout, Fiala took a twirl on the ice, tapped his teammates on the shin pads but returned to the bench and asked Evason if they could have a word. Fiala told his coach, with whom he has butted heads since their days together in Milwaukee as part of the Nashville Predators organization, that he understood what he did wrong, accepted his punishment and that he would support his teammates.

Evason decided to give him another chance. Fiala’s first shift came nine minutes into the third period. He would ultimately pay his coach back by digging out a 50-50 puck off a faceoff that led to Mats Zuccarello’s overtime-forcing goal with 35 seconds left. He then scored the shootout winner.

Ever since, Fiala has been different player, both on the ice and off. A few days later, he got married “on paper” to his longtime girlfriend, Jessica Ljung, and the two have a big wedding planned in Spain in August. Over the final 10 games of the season, Fiala wanted to emulate former Predators teammates Roman Josi and Pekka Rinne by bringing an ill child and their family to a Wild game. Fiala gave the families four tickets to the game, vouchers for food and drink and a bunch of Wild swag. After the game, he met with them near the locker room.

“I really feel for them,” Fiala said. “These kids are having heart surgeries or cancer, and they’re 5, 6 years old. It’s just sad and unfair and I just want to give them a fun night of hockey so they can get their mind off real life.”

Fiala’s big heart doesn’t insulate him from Evason’s wrath, though. Fiala often drives his coach bonkers with sloppy turnovers and careless penalties. If Fiala goofs up, Evason’s liable to bench him or call him out publicly, something he rarely does with others.

Fiala has openly admitted he hasn’t always been the best teammate. As confident as he is, he often gets bothered by things beyond his control. He has received a lot of tough love over the years during innumerable conversations with Evason, and it’s clear the Wild weren’t ready last summer to commit long-term to him.

But Fiala is playing carefree right now, saying, “What I’ve learned the last few months, when I’m playing hockey, I don’t think about anything else.”

I took a stab at juggling things a bit, but this is a pretty solid lineup.

I'd rather see QB centering on the 3rd flanked by Arty and Raz <-- Looked great on the wing! Let Lizzo center the 4th with Lemieux and Grundi.... I'd package AI and GV... But hey, I love Lizzo. The kid is a puck stripping machine, is quick and uber responsible.

Fair point. I will admit I was just giving Sultanic the (playoff) business. Since we are the polar opposites on the LGK posting spectrum. If it had been phrased without the Kopitar shade, but still pointing out how they'd be challenging to work together-- likeys. Pretty sure we're still cool, tho. =)

I'm ready to see what works best for all parties involved and am excited for Kevin to suit up for the squad.
