Elliotte Friedman: Chychrun May Be Available

jt and I are old friends and our banter is not to be misconstrued as adversarial.

He is a brilliant dude and an impeccable researcher.

[I've been waiting for at least a week to post this gif --because it's everywhere in my algorhythm, which can't be good given the book reference/context- and making it work]

I agree with you in that I would prefer the Kings keep Bjornfot in any deal for Chychrun and also that Toby is likely to get better. But I would still like the upgrade at LD if the only way is to trade him. And I would keep Clarke over Bjornfot as well. I think he can be a poor man's Makar.

uhhhhh...dude? One more of these and it's health and welfare check in.=)

There's an armchair GM tool on CapFriendly (just to clarify, I'm not the tool, it's a way to create your own roster). I just created this team for next season using round numbers for cap hits and making assumptions about the RFAs and what they'll sign for:

Kempe ($5M) - Kopitar ($10M) - Kaliyev ($.9M)
Iafallo ($4M) - Byfield ($.9M) - Vilardi ($.9M)
Moore ($1.9M) - Danault - ($5.5M) - Arvidsson ($4.2M)
Lemieux ($2.5M) - Lizotte ($1M) - Fagemo ($.8M)
Scratches: Grundstr?m ($1M), Andersson ($.9M)

Anderson ($2.5M) - Doughty ($11M)
Bj?rnfot ($.9M) - Durzi ($2M)
Walker ($2.7M) - Clarke ($.9M)
Scratch: Moverare ($.8M)

Quick ($5.8M)
Petersen ($5M)

Cap hit: $75M
Cap space: $6.5M

Players who are gone:
Brown ($5.9M)
Edler ($3.5M)
Maatta ($3.3M)
Roy ($3.2M) (or sub him in for Walker and Walker can be gone and Durzi moves to LD - that would lower the cap space by $.5M)
AA ($2.7M)

So have at it and figure out how to fit in a UFA LD/RD with a big cap hit like a Dougie Hamilton at $8.5M. You can change RFA cap hits but be realistic. This is who they are with their cap hits for this year:
Kempe ($2M)
Vilardi ($.9M)
Lemieux ($1.6M)
Grundstrom ($.7M)
Anderson ($.9M)
Durzi ($.8M)
Moverare ($.8)

I think your proposed cap hit for Kempe is too low, while it's too high for Anderson and Lemieux. That should all even out.

More importantly, your $75m cap hit is off. Your roster is actually $71.1m. Add in the Phanuef buyout and the Richardson settlement, and it will be about $73m. So cap space is actually $8.5 million (assuming it doesn't go up). If you add a left shot d-man, then you could ship out Walker's $2.7m (for a minimal return likely). But suddenly, even a $9m contract is manageable.

Not that we need to go that high.

Yeah, it's impossible to know. I was using Toffoli as a close comp for Kempe, Walker for Anderson, and Lemieux is $2.5M because he's the only one on the team who does what he does. But I could see him come in at $1.6M again.

You're right, I took the Capfriendly cap hit number and just pasted it, but it's wrong. I just double checked it so that's really weird. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll edit my post now.

And the cap is supposed to go up about $1M for 22-23. So $82.5M - $73.2M = $9.2M cap space.

While this discussion is entirely focused on a good up and coming d-man from AZ there are other options. Provolov, Sanheim (who was linked to LAK interests just last summer), Robert Hagg … just to name a few. If you lose out on Chychrun because AZ is trying to get as much as possible pivot and move to the others. It would be a shame to deal a strength - RD - first because you haven’t fully develop it yet and second you don’t really know what you have.

Bottom line to me is if Spencer Knight was a piece that FLA was willing to move (as well as three other first round values) that deal would be done already. It would fulfill AZs demand completely.

I think we need to think the Kings will make a minor deal on an LD - I’m thinking a rental like Kulak - as well as a solid depth wing. I’d not be surprised if it was Kulak and Matthieu Perrault for a top tier prospect, a second tier prospect and a middle pick or two.

I’d love Chychrun but AZ - as any well run club looking to rebuild should do - is trying to start a bidding war. If the Kings don’t think they are there yet go to your backup plan and bolster this team with help. The existing roster deserves it for all the hard work so far and the young players need the playoff experience.

That trade offer is absurd. There's not top-end guy at all...of course the Coyotes say no. Put in Turcotte and you've got a more realistic offer.

Exactly. To be blunt, that trade offer sucks.
Lias Andersson has minimal trade value. Vilardi needs to rebuild his reputation. A year ago, he'd be a great trade chip but not today. TB has one of the worst point shares of our defensemen, is still young, but projects as a 2nd pairing guy at best. A 2nd and a 3rd is trash. We might as well pull out Vilardi and offer Wagner+Tkachev+Dudas. No GM makes those quality for quantity trades.

My wife says I'm her longest friend. :dancing_cuke:

I have mixed feelings that all her friends are women.

A compliment, is a compliment is a compliment. Don't overthink it. =)

He's got Clarke on the left side in one of those potential scenarios. Wut?

Strange. He had a Q&A on his Instagram story and I asked him if one of Clarke, Spence, Faber, or Grans could be moved to LD. His response was typically “mayor” like:

“Any of them can. Don’t see it long term.”

Couldn’t imagine they’d break Clarke into the NHL on his off side if the plan is to move him to RD anyway. And if not, what the hell are we doing here on page 48?!

Hmmm. Personally, it's either read what you guys have to say on page 48 or post Jimmy Cliff songs. I made my choice.

To that end: it has to work out for one team, why not us?

I'm only on page 12. I have to have those longer page settings or I'd feel like I'm wasting my life here instead of being a contributing member of society.

You people on page 48, you should do something productive with your lives. It's a beautiful day. Go outside!
