It's probably been mentioned somewhere in this thread, but part of the reason Chychrun may have had a good offense year last year was he played in a pretty weak division, with the Kings, Sharks and Ducks sucking eggs and St. Louis being worse than expected. Getting to play the same teams over and over. The fact that he never played against most of the teams in the league could support the conclusion that last year's performance is an outlier and not representative of his true talent level.

I think those are the LD that are supposedly maybe available to varying degree. Chiarot is obviously the biggest name there. Ive seen arguments in favor of all of them. If you're looking for somebody with more skill, i havent seen too many other names mentioned. Sergachev is the guy people keep bringing up because fo TB cap issues, but it seems more likely than not that they find a way to keep him, and he wouldnt even likely be available (if at all) until the off season.

Whoever gets Chiarot will be buying an anchor. I loved reading Dom describe what a mistake he will be to acquire.
If the Kings wanted to upgrade on Maatta, then they could consider Giordano as a rental. But I don't know what they really they out of trading assets for a rental. If Edler comes back, that will be like getting a great rental for free.
Any deal should be a hockey deal for future seasons.

IF you knew that the difference between making the playoffs (and giving the kids experience playing in them) was dependant on a rental, what would you pay? I mean, surely you would pay at least a 5th rounder, right? Would you trade Thomas? Nousiainen? Burke?

Short answer: no. Let's set aside "giving the kids experience" argument and focus on ownership. Los Angeles is a fickle city, and the Kings are a niche sport in that city, no way the ownership takes the risk. Whomever will not excite a new fanbase to watch this team; especially in a city that has had three LA teams win championships in the past four years. But that rental might, might bring longtime fans out to a playoff push game. That said: any rental on this team will be a moderate upgrade at best.
Other side of that coin: unless it’s Hertl (i know we are typing about defense but stay with me). Which would be impossible. But it's 2022 (see also: the colloquialism it’s 2020, chaos rules)so I’m ready to take it one day at a time (just like the drunks).
Fave useless Kings rental to-date: Iggy.

I'd trade a 1st right now if it guarantees a playoff spot. Realistically (with no guarantees), id be dealing a 2nd and/or some of the lesser prospects like Akil or Madden. But the flip side is im not dealing our top prospects like Vilardi, turcotte, grans, spence, etc unless we get more than a rental. Kings are in that bubble spot where i think its worth making trades to increase our chances of making the playoffs, but not going "all in" on rentals to push for a cup. Long term fit trades? Sure. But a 1st+ for a rental seems like jumping the gun just a bit.

A word of caution on Edler, that broken ankle is not going to heal like hes a younger guy. If he's able to come back like the player he was before I'd be amazed. The question is how effective would he still be with even more limited movement?

I don't understand the perceived need for Chychrun. LAs defense is stifling. It is one of the best in the league. Why give up assets for something LA doesn't need? We should be targeting a top six winger this offseason.

It’s not really about the defensive side of the puck, although obviously that aspect matters for whoever they bring in.

That's a great point. As much of a pleasant surprise as he was, I'm not sure we want Edler back at 75% mobility. He was useful, but he wasn't exactly dynamic before that major injury.
When he went down, I thought the conversation was "season ending", maybe even "career ending". Has there been any recent updates?

He's saying the Kings need someone on the back end who can facilitate offense and hopefully add a few goals themselves. I personally think that Durzi, Doughty and Clarke will fill the need once Clarke is ready, but we still need a long term solution at LD. Personally I agree with you though that Chychrun (for the current asking price) is not the answer. That's not to say that he wouldn't be a significant upgrade, just that the asking price is overly steep for the player that he is today.

We’re at the point that we are ready to take a step. You can’t expect we’re going to play the dozen or so prospects we have. This is when you deal a few for an upgrade.
Maatta is the weak link, and won’t be here in a year. If you can upgrade him, you do it.
Actually, that doesn’t seem to be the issue right now. I worry more about getting pushed around in the Playoffs.

100% agree on needing more size, but scoring from the backend is definitely an issue. The blue line has 13 goals on the season. Doughty has 7 of those. And while Durzi has been a welcome boost, his shot isn’t that dangerous. Great puck skill. Great vision. Average shot. We need another defenseman that can score. It would really open things up for the team to have somebody dangerous on the left side.

Phoenix was putting him on RD recently apparently to attract teams like the Leafs who want RD. I'd have to search who said it, but someone in the official hockey reporting biz.
