FA 2025 (lets get the discussions in one thread)

100% an indictment on Blake.

A vaguely remember a quote by Dean Lombardi after he signed a bunch of free agents the summer of 2007 something to the effect of if I’m signing a bunch of guys on July 1 I’ve failed.
100%. Signing one (maybe 2) of these guys would be a "hey, we're this one piece away from being competitive". Signing basically 4 of the same guys = we're dumpster fire.

Also, Florida and Edmonton do what they do because they lock up their top guys and then bring in Perry, Schmidt, and that ilk to $1M contracts to play on the bottom pairing/line and add size/character. You don't hand out bags and bags of money for those guys.

It comes down to whether I trust the world or the Kings PR machine on whether or not our free agency was good or a disaster. I'm going to side with the media and internet sentiments from people who aren't Kings fans and conclude that Holland made a mess.

He basically stirred the pot a little bit. Left enough cap to sign McJesus next year. :biggrinking:

$6M in cap space left and Laffy is still an RFA. Sign him and conceivably, this is the team the Kings start with this season:
Defence:
Doughty, Ceci, Anderson, Dumoulin, Edmundson, Burroughs, Clarke, Moverare
Forwards:
Fiala, Kopitar, Byfield, Danault, Kempe, Kuzmenko, Moore, Foegele, Armia, Perry, Helenius, Turcotte, Laferriere(?)
Goal:
Kuemper, Forsberg

How much of that 6M will Laf get? Save the rest, see how the team performs and then start with tweaking at the first sign of trouble ?

My guess is 3M for Laf. The rest will be banked for the trade deadline.

I don’t think the similarities are there since Nagy and Calder were playing top 6 roles and Handzus was playing 3C. Calder was where ozone pressure went to die. I just hated that signing.

The only serious hole now was 2 LD since Gavrikov wouldn’t resign. But shoring up the fourth line and signing a better back up goalie is not a dumpster fire. Actually all three of those signings are big wins.

Leaving the top 9 as-is means the important part of the roster is in good shape. Would have liked an upgrade in scoring, but there aren’t holes here.

I still want a puck mover on the left side. However, the more I hear about Dumoulin the more I’m intrigued. I also think it’s quite possible Gavrikov doesn’t do as well in NYR. He was not a number one guy in CLB and his fill-in for Werenski wasn’t nearly as impressive as his fill-in for Drew. No secret the Kings elevate defensemen’s game. Dumoulin said the Kings system is perfect for him, for one.

Which brings us to Ceci. Part of this self-induced. Kings had a 3 RD in Spence but Holland and Hiller are looking at this as an upgrade. I’d have preferred Perbix for less money. I don’t like Ceci’s contract, and I like it even less with Edmundson having three years left. But it’s not a move made because the Kings needed a body. It’s a deliberate change over what Spence was bringing.

On paper the Kings moves are hilarious. Everyone is over 30. Gavrikov leaving isn’t a good look, either. But I don’t think any of these takes are taking into account the actual logic of the signings.

gavrikov - ceci

edmundson - clarke

would have been better than

edmundson - ceci

dumoulin - clarke

I wish they could have gotten it done.

And the two forwards are a low risk can we give the coach a solid 4th line to throw out there vs mcdavid. I'm not sure how perry could keep up. I figure he'll just stay on the offensive side of the ice "accidentally" falling on the other goalie.

I'm glad we didn't sign Gavrikov to a ridiculous contract in a desperate act to keep him. His stats and play were impressive this year, and will be missed, but his lack of speed and physical play was always a concern (especially come playoff time).

The only move I have concern with is the signing of Ceci. I just don't really see the logic in that one, but hopefully his play will show me otherwise.

The other signings all make sense, and while they tend to be on inflated deals we could have done much worse.
