Hiller Hotseat Thread

Hiller is a clown but this team is a combination of, on it's last legs (Kopi + Drew + Phil + Ceci) and simply just not built for the modern game (speed + skill).

No new coach is changing anything except maybe a dead cat bounce IMO.

Hiller’s press conference is must watch. Starts about 5:20

The cracks are really showing. An extended losing streak will break the dam.

He sounds more like a commentator than a coach. All the blame goes on the players, with a sprinkle of praise thrown in.

What I am wondering is if the players refused to play the game the coach laid out for them during the first 40 minutes of the game, then what did the coach do about it? I never hear from him how his strategy was lacking, how his staff takes ownership and is doing their part to put the players in a better position to succeed on the PP, or anything close to accountability.

Reality is, Hiller has checked out and is hoping he gets canned so he can sit on the beach while collecting a paycheck for another season+, taking time to relax and renew then finding a decent assistant head coach position on a contender.

True. That’s part of the reason I’m thinking he waits for the off-season.
Would make the most sense for him. Expanded choices. Let Avs just go out and win this year and come back fresh next season with an improved team somewhere.

Most important part to me is if Holland actively is talking with him, then Hiller is going to get replaced by someone.

Helene would make a better GM or coach.

I think a new coach can teach this team to work together. Because they are not doing that. That is number one.

Number two, they need a gamer and they need a puck moving defenseman. If they get two of those things somehow, they are fine.

It reminds me of what Deano said before they got Sutter. He did not believe his players were on their last legs, they needed motivation. He fires the coach, brings in a disciplined one, brings in carter.

That does not mean they will win the cup, but god damn we need to be competitive.

Probably not a popular opinion but from what I see this is not on Hiller. (However, I have no idea if he can coach or not but have wanted to see if he can.)
This team is ice cold. For a bit Kempe, Fiala & Perry were scoring, but that’s mostly dried up. No one else has done anything.
Hiller can shuffle lines and the power play, but no one can produce. It’s a team-wide slump.
I think you wait it out, wait for guys to find their games.

Actually, to follow up on this more... I recall when Woodcroft was let go by the oil slick, Holland was denying any rumors of a coaching change, then, well....... it happened. I remember there being a big push by the leadership group for a change and they basically forced the choice of Paul Coffey as an assistant coach.

This is an interesting read.

And Blake denied he’d fire McClellan a couple weeks before he did. What else can these guys say?

I hate quotes like this. The game is not speed and skill as much as you think come playoff time.

It’s grit, pain, size, physicality, and intestinal fortitude. You have to be willing to lose your spleen to score a goal, if you to win the battles.

If it was speed and skill, the Oilers would be back to back champions. They got to the last dance because everyone outside of McDrai was willing to do that.

Sutter always preached about playing with Pace and applying pressure. Make the other team uncomfortable. That’s not speed and skill.

The Panthers are the epitome of that philosophy.

Gallant might be the right guy for this group. Someone who can make hockey fun to play again… especially in Kopi’s last season.

And I don’t think enough management people realized that it was Gavrikov who brought the joy into the locker room. The team needed him to stay in L.A. for so many reasons. His departure was either a terrible mistake from, or a terrible insult to, the organization.
