It’s the same argument from years ago about the $CAD vs $USD. Players were paid the same numerical amount, but the $USD had more value. So playing in Canada meant potentially losing money they could be making playing for a US team.

Different currency shouldn't matter. Cap is defined in USD, which you then convert to CAD for paying the player in an exchange rate that applies at the time of transaction. The player could then convert it to USD or Swedish Krona or Rubles or whatever...

But cap defines a gross salary, so local tax laws DO matter.

Reminder: the Dodgers just signed two more premier free agents this offseason.

Every star player on the Dodgers has the same tax rate as the stars on Kings. For some strange reason one team gets ever star they want while the other has to pay 3rd pairing D-men 5M a year.
 
When you make $50 large a year, the tax hit is large, however, after how many million do you keep tabs. When you make under 12 large you might look at the tax hit as a hinderance? Idon’t know, I’m not in their category.

It is a matter of perspective. As someone who sees the sport stars earnings as diabolically high it all seems petty. But what do I know and in the end - I don't get to decide and you can't force someone to decide either way. You can, however, try to convince them signing here will have considerable benefits on other levels, both from compete aspect (strong team, desirable playstyle/coach, other stars) to other money earning opportunities (of which there aren't many for hockey players in CA)...so, yeah, the Kings simply don't have much to offer to UFAs.

I was referring to the issue where Canadian teams had to pay more $CAD salary to match the value of the $USD salary. The exchange rate was terrible in the 90s and a lot of Canadian teams couldn’t pay what US teams could pay. The salary cap introduced in 2005 helped fix this parity.

I’ve been thinking about this and last seasons rosters and asking myself “who is a Jim Hiller style player. Which players are thriving in his system?”

I came up with 3.
Gavrikov
Edmundson
Kemper

That’s it. Maybe Joel Armia will be #4 but if I asked this question at the same time last season I would’ve included Foegele.

And of those 3 players one of those guys decided he didn’t want a second season under Hiller.

Unbelievable.

It's really a system that any defenseman and goalie should thrive in, and any forward should wilt in.

That said, I would add Forsberg to that list with an honorable mention going to Spence (who Hiller apparently wanted to get rid of).
 
I'm convinced Hiller's staying until Summer. This season is done. I don't think the front office sees enough reason to buy at the deadline and doesn't think a shakeup will lead to the playoffs. I have to agree on that. The team hasn't given ownership any reason to invest further into this broken system. I expect a small sell off, and then a shakeup in June.

A small sell off would be great at this point...trading Perry and Kuz for two late 1st picks would be fantastic. I fear it's not happening though...

I could live with trading Kuz and Perry and then using these assets to acquire a non-rental, like Trocheck. I think that could happen. But no way Ken only sells without adding anyone with at least a decent pedigree....

I'd make both trades in a split second. I think Kuz would get a 3rd since that's what we paid with half retained and he's basically the same player. Perry probably similar.
But any kind of first for the rentals would be an instant trade for me. Dont think, just sign the deal before the other side wises up.

It's a sellers market this year, and if Danault netted us a (then) high 2nd...Kuz is recently in quite good form and Perry is a known commodity many teams would like to have.

The Kings would have to a million or two, maybe add a 5th rounder in case of Kuz, but IMO it's doable.
