Kings sign Phillip Danault for 6 years

I generally dislike this signing. Danault is good. In fact, he's a perfect 3C in the mold of Jarrett Stoll. The term is "ok" not great (4-5 years would be ideal, I can live with 6). But the dollars is WAY TOO MUCH for a 3C. We never paid Stoll, Handzus, etc this kind of money for this type of role.

He's going to be a buy-out candidate in yr4.

sooooooo if you know he's a buyout candidate, aka an overpayment to get him here through UFA, are you happy with the fit for the usable years?
 
I dont think the dollars are going to be nearly as important in those last 2 yrs of his contract. He might still be considered overpaid, but it probably won't be by much.

I'm disappointed.. I'm embarrassed.
I see that Trevor Lewis had a similar statline in the shortened season.. 750k cap hit.. better faceoff %, same amount of goals, and Trevor was a fan fave. just saying.

How do you reconcile your opinion with the FACT that he was the FIRST LINE center on a SCF team?

Ugh. Did you also stop watching NHL hockey and just envelop yourself into fantasy hockey? Danault was the FIRST LINE center on the Canadiens (who played in the SCF), talked about as the Conn Smyth winner, and is now in the talk for the Selke from now on.

First winners and losers recap I'm watching now had Kings as one of the winners. Felt that Danault was a big win for them...even went as far as saying the loss will cause Montreal to miss playoffs.

He's a guy that will play against the McDavids of the league and should help Kopi's offensive numbers.

So has Blake Lizotte. This point sort of buries the lede a bit. It basically he means he doesn't play on the power play all that much. If you rarely play on the power play, most of your points are going to come 5 on 5, even if that's not all that many points. I'm not panning the signing, I'm just saying that as a statistic, that's pretty misleading.

For reference, in his time with Habs, Danault has taken 222 faceoffs on the PP. He has taken 860 on the PK. Kopitar has taken 1,197 faceoffs on the PP in that time. Just shows that he's not really a big part of the power play. Which again, is fine, but I don't think that stat means what Hoven thinks it means.
 
Danault is the perfect center for a Vilardi or Turcotte or Kupari, whoever doesn't get traded.

Love this deal.
 
It's been years since I have last posted. My 2 cents are this is a great signing. Just reading what Mark Yannetti says about what he looks for in their draft selections, Danault checks off on what the Kings are trying to do. Pulling this from LA Kings Insider on where Mark Yannetti "has spoken in the past about valuing traits in players which he believes to be elite, rather than selecting an overall package that might be greater, but without anything that stands out at a higher level. In Clarke, the Kings drafted a player with a few of those tools, a player who has been labeled as the top available offensive defenseman in the draft." You're getting a possible perennial Selke nominee. For all the comparisons being brought up to Stoll/Handzus, were either of them nominated for the Selke? Unless things have changed, in the playoffs you'll need at least 2 lines capable of shutting down the opposing team.
 
If this player can score 5 goals on a Stanley Cup Final team, he can surely put up 3 for the Kings in 82 games. With that said he does play sticky “D” in which the Kings have none so this is most likely great for the Kings.

On the surface, I disliked the signing as well. But the more I see, the more I like.

I think you need to do a little more reading on Danault:

Guy is excellent 5v5, can be leader/mentor for the kids and a Selke nominee. Oh yeah, and he gets no real PowerPlay time. Did we overpay and offer too many years? Maybe, but these types of guys are necessary to take your team to the next level.

Exactly. Total **** show move. It makes little sense today and it's event worse in 2-3 years when Byfield/Vilardi/Turcotte are trying to play bigger roles. We're going to have to make some trades after this signing.

I also fail to see how it frees Kopitar up to play a more offensive game. He's still a Selke candidate. He's not a speedster who can cherry pick at the red line. I truly do not understand this signing.

I ask this sincerely...are you watching/listening/reading what any hockey people are saying about this? I haven't heard one yet pan this deal.

Yes, I was listening to Nhl network radio all afternoon during the free agency window. They like the player but weren't crazy about the price. Also wondered why the Kings were getting another center.

Personally I'd have gone all in on Hamilton rather then Edler + Danault.

Edit: the guy got praise too. He's one of the best shutdown forwards in the NHL. That's not in doubt. He's just not much of a scorer and that was with some decently talented wingers.

Kopitar can take less min on the PK, and less draws in the defensive zone. One of the big issues with Vilardi is that he be couldn't trusted him to take draws in our defensive zone. Also allows Kopitar to match up against more favorable opponents, instead of needing to always try and line him up against the other team's top lines. He's not suddenly going to become MacKinnon, that's not his game, but it should allow him to get more opportunities to score.
