Kings trade w Sharks

I know there are some real Spence fans on this board so this is just food for thought.

Does this move perhaps make it possible that the Kings move Spence?
Look at the potential D corps, especially with PP time…
DD is for now on the top unit.
Clarke I certainly think is on the second unit.
That leaves Spence without a role in one of his best areas.

Dealing Spence and replacing him with Burroughs makes the D a little more physical, which is an absolute necessity.

I have no idea how the org feels about Spence. But this trade opens the door to a move with Spence.
I’m not advocating either way. But it does make it possible.

The way I see it, Spence and Clarke will share the blue line on PP2. Spence better not be going anywhere. He played great last year considering he was handcuffed with Englund as his partner.

From all reports Burroughs was the worst player on the Sharks last year. I imagine that they signed him with the intent to increase their odds at getting the 1st overall draft pick this year. It seems to have worked from them.

This guy has played 324 AHL games and only 168 NHL games and I hope is destined to be the 7th D, or AHL bound for the Kings.

Kings still need to get a better PMLHD.

I might be in the minority here but I just don't see Clarke playing this upcoming season with the Kings. He needs another year with the Reign to bulk up and learn the game. I don't want to see him get pounded and end up on the injured list all season. With this defense, I don't see the Kings making the playoffs so it's best to keep him with the Reign. The Kings are so soft on the back end.

No, not in the minority. I am not convinced that he is ready. We will see.

Of all the recent takes on here, and I’ve had my share of bad ones (Wagner playing a pest game is what he needs to be an NHL player; include a sweetener in the SEA draft; PLD is more mature than Vilardi), the idea that Clarke will play next season on the Reign is really removed from reality. You can think that all you want, but he’s on the team.

The Kings cannot possibly think they can play both Clarke and Spence. Individually the Kings D doesn't seem too bad but the sum is much less than the individual pieces.

Let me ask…
If you’re correct (and I do not disagree with you) how does it play out? Does Clarke spend another year in Ontario or is Spence moved?

Re Clarke I think it’s time. I think they’ve got to get his NHL career started. He’s not going to be noticeably bigger or stronger a year from now.
The main question I have about him is whether he will be able to learn from his mistakes. He’s going to make them. But will he be able to get past them?

My primary negative with Durzi was watching him do the same dumb things over and over. I hope finds the learning curve easier.

I think he will be on the team as well. I just am not convinced he is ready. Just because he is the Kings best option, and the Kings need to go cheap does not mean that he is ready to log lots of minutes in the NHL. The Kings are burning years off of Clarke's ELC, so yeah he is more than likely on the team. However.................................

When the Kings moved Johnson to make room for Voynov, that guy was ready for the NHL and ready to handle what ever load was thrown his way. I do not have that same sense with Clarke. Clarke is immature, both emotionally and physically. Hell of a hockey player, but he is cocky and sometimes he taunts opposing players. I fear he is going to pay the price if he does not cool it. Maybe he will come in next year and will show he has matured. That wold be outstanding.

Voynov made a lot of mistakes, but damned if he didn’t hustle when he did and try and recover. More than not, he prevented a scoring chance, and Sutter let him figure it out.

That said, his bad pinch cost is in OT against the Blackhawks in 2013.

For all the crap that Sutter gets around here, the reality is that he put the younger players in and gave them a chance to figure it out. It worked out with Voynov, as well as King, Nolan, and then with Toffoli and Pearson.

Forgot my last point, this trade gives us a bottom pairing, right D, that’s physical and can be a fallback plan to lean on if the Clarke/Spence experiment fails after 10 games or so,

I would move Spence. He is another Lizotte, just too small. Moreover, he has very limited offense.

If I am the Kings GM, I am stockpiling picks. After watching the playoffs, I realize that this team is nowhere near making a run in the playoffs. Yes, you will have to let a few players go, however, realistically you have to get better, and it will take years. The window is closed for a deep run and two players are at the end of their careers.

Adding two or three players is not going to get them to the top before these two retire. You can't base your moves because two of your best players are at the end of their careers. If they want to win, it's best that they move on. So many teams are closer than the Kings. Most of the picks the Kings have had did not work out so either the scouting has to get better, or the GM has to get better.

Good luck with that with the current upper management...they will milk the DD and AK cows till it spurts whatever fluid left in the bladder.

Might as well hope for the best possible on-ice product while this lasts...
