It was awesome to find this playing on MGM HD after talking about it in the Oldman thread. Hadn't seen it since, I think, high school. Still thought it was really good and that Oldman was ****ing brilliant in it. Still thought Nancy/Chloe Webb was annoying as hell. Great movie, though.
I've been pimping a bit in the Asian movie thread, and picked up a Hong Kong Blu-Ray of this movie (since HK Blus are the same region code as ours) after it getting all kinds of great reviews, it being nominated for 11 of this last year's Japanese Academy awards and winning 4 of them including best picture and director.
And I was NOT disappointed.
This is one of those movies that leaves you kind of in shock after you watch it, saying "holy ****" to yourself over and over. It's a story about a teacher whose daughter was killed by some of her students and her revenge is so elaborate it's almost Oldboy-ish (in the mechanics, not the outcome). Best not to say anything more about it. If you watch it, go in with as little knowledge as possible and let it surprise the **** out of you. It's disturbing and brilliant. No surprise it's from Tetsuya Nakashima, the director of Memories Of Matsuko which was also disturbing (though in an entirely different way).
It's also gorgeously shot and edited. It uses some of the same musical cues repeatedly, including songs by Boris and a Radiohead track, which took me out of the movie a bit, but they're otherwise perfect choices to fit the mood and scene. In addition to being such a great story, it's technically impressive.
Highest possible recommendation. Movie of the year so far.
