Pheonix Copley

i think copley is likely to continue providing what he's providing now. He's big. He's generally in good position. But he' snot going to steal any games. He might lose a game here and there with his lackadaisical play at times, but i dont really feel like he's playing a game of luck right now. He's not suddenly going to stop doing what he's doing. With him in net, a lot of the season will simply come down to how well the other guys play. That's not exactly inspiring, but i do think there's a level of comfort there.

Agreed, he's big and pretty consistent game to game. The true test will be to see how he performs in the playoffs, but there is something to be said for a solid goaltender who provides consistency and won't lose you games (even though, as you pointed out, he won't steal them either). I also agree with your point that he will give the team in front of him to the opportunity to determine the outcome of the game and he should hopefully continue to get better with more NHL experience.

Hopefully pheonix will entertain a 2 year, 4 million dollar contract(or thereabouts) to act as our backstop/fail safe for the next couple of seasons. If anything, this guy has certainly proven that he deserves to be in the NHL as a #2 .

When you look across the league at what guys like Riemer, Francouz, or Stolarz are making, $2m AAV seems generous and likely would be the highest he could hope to sign for. Likely he falls in the $1.5-1.8m AAV range.

This, to me, signals that Quick is definitely done after this season, and it’s highly likely the team sticks with Copley/Quick throughout the remainder of this campaign, then resuming next year with Peterson/Copley. I simply can’t see the management waiving quick to pull Peterson back up, even if they do it as a purely paper transaction and don’t require JQ to report to the Reign. Furthermore, I think the whole situation with Quick will also preclude any trading for additional outside goaltending help for the end of this season, even if they were magically able to offload Peterson in the other direction.

LOS ANGELES — Goaltender Pheonix Copley signed a one-year extension with the Los Angeles Kings worth $1.5 million.

Copley’s 15 wins since making his Kings debut on Dec. 6 at Ottawa are the most in the league over the past two months. He is 15-3-1 with a 2.92 goals-against average and .897 save percentage in 20 games this season.

Copley, who has won four of his last ive starts, has emerged as Los Angeles’ top goaltender and has started 20 of the Kings’ 26 games since being called up. He set a career high with 45 saves on 48 shots faced in a 4-3 win over Florida on Jan. 24.

Copley recorded his first shutout as a Los Angeles King against the Pittsburgh Penguins winning 6 - 0 on Dustin Brown's Jersey Retirement night, February 11, 2023.

This is a terrible move by the Kings, Copley has given up two goals in the last two games. One goal is acceptable, however two goals is unacceptable.

Could Quick simply retire now to help alleviate the situation? He retires a King, we don't have to waiver him. We could agree to pay out his remaining salary.

No. He's going the same way Dustin did, with dignity. He's more than earned it.

Copley's #'s aren't the greatest. His win-loss is.
17-3-1 this year
33-12-4 career

Not a chance in hell. Could they carry 3 goaltenders at some point? Possibly, but it will take a ransom to get J.C. + Vejmelka. All while dumping dead money. Pipe dream unless Clarke, a first, and 2 top prospects are moving.

Quick hasn't looked good but I think he's going to get another run at some point. If we add a defender and improve the core, or even if we don't, Quick still can get hot.

And he's coming in well rested with a chip on the shoulder, conceivably.

Not to mention he's a freaking legend, and as people noted above he'll be treated as such. I support that.

As an aside, there's no way he's back with the Kings next year, but I could see him going to an East Coast contender as a backup for one last push. He's not going to want to go out like this.

Copley is getting it done, hopefully he continues to help the Kings win games.

The only way Quick comes back next year is with the Kings. So either he is a King, or he retires. Quick is a loyal and passionate guy that got a solid reminder with DBs retirement ceremony as to how important legacy is. He's not going to give that up for 1 year of playing with another team.

Also, we know Blake has historically given the Kings legends the option to choose their own fate, whether or not to come back, so it will be ultimately Quick's decision. Likely, unless he turns his season around, he may choose to retire but you never know...

Blake would be doing his position and us a fans a massive disservice if he were to offer Quick another players contract. Likely he'd being doing Quick one too. Even if he gets hot this year and wins a cup and a conn smythe Blake would do what? A 1 year 1 million dollar deal? I'm ecstatic that Quick has been able to play out this contract, I don't think anyone would have bet on it when he signed it. I get that he should have a choice, but the reality it you give people a choice hoping they make the right one, but you better be prepared if they make the wrong one. I don't see how Blake doesn't waive him to the minors next year if it is that way. Would Quick be ok with that? Would the fans?

When you are talking about waiving Quick next year, that is your opinion and that's great but that would mean that Blake and the Organization have already lost confidence in Quick and have had that conversation already making the decision very easy for Quick. Neither you or I know what the right thing is in regards to what Quick's decision should be, to come back or not come back, but yes I am confident that we can count on Quick to make the right decision (as much as he and the Organization know it to be).

He won't be re-signed. He probably will retire after this year. If not, he'll play somewhere else, sadly.

Unless Quick gets a contract being the Reign goalie coach with a chance of promotion once Ranford decides to hang them up...I'm fine with Quick going to Ontario...

We have witnessed the difference the past couple of games between a decent NHL goalie and a former great who has lost it.

Quick has always had a quirky demeanor but he's looked emphatically checked out since his demotion, if not all season. It looks like he's on shrooms or something out there. I think retirement is on his mind and he ain't happy he's going out like this. But he's a legend who has cemented his legacy.

He's a #1 and a winner. He definitely, absolutely is not enjoying himself on the bench, and I think even if physically he had it left to give I think someone coming in (Peterson, now Copley) coming in and taking his spot has affected him in innumerable ways. Or you know, shrooms. I'd be. Sitting on the bench looks boring.

That paddle save in the shootout was pretty awesome though. Moments like that are few and far between at this point.
