Phil Danault - Called in Sick against the Flames? Asked for a trade? UPDATE: TRADED

Now just sit back and wait for the inevitable!

Holland will trade Greentree and this pick and/or our 26 first for an older player who previously has scored 30 goals but isn’t any more and for sure will not do that with the Kings. Like Rakell from Pens or something like that!

A disaster waiting to happen, to ”save” this season.

The fact is that I love hockey trades, but unfortunately I suspect that this will end badly…

Can’t decide - am I angry with Danault for allegedly giving up and calling in sick? Is this on Hiller’s style of play that Danault couldn’t take anymore? Either way, a second is higher than I expected. I guess it clears salary too.

Mostly, glad Turcotte will be forced into that third line now (maybe second sometimes)

At least the Kings didn’t have to take Laine in return!

I see it as Danault not being happy with a diminished role. Kings had to elevate QB this year. Danault probably felt he had earned better.

Kings will miss Danault on defense, on face-offs and in the playoffs where he performs particularly on the defensive side.

Kings have cap space now. I’m wondering if this team needs anymore aging superstars. I also wonder if the Kings play so far this year would allow a Stamkos or O’Reilly to produce? Kings just don’t do much in the offensive zone that would give either of those guys an opportunities.

Danault was good here.

That would be great. But I think Tuch might be in their sights as well now that there is cap space to sign him and then a potential 2C/3C. Much depends on Turc succeeding in an expanded role… much depends on whether QB remains a center…

I keep looking at Buffalo because they’ve got the new GM and they could be a team that’s willing to get younger.

I pitched this idea this past summer: Byfield for Tage Thompson. It makes a lot of sense for the Kings if they’re going all in this season. Thompson makes the team even older at 28 but he’s already a finished project.

Huge, 35+ goal scoring Center. Excellent on the PP. Unfortunately he’s a disaster at the dot career 42% win percentage but he gives the Kings a #1 Center for the next 4.5 seasons.

I personally wouldn’t trade Byfield but I don’t think Holland has the patience to wait around for him to find the next level of his development.

Kings are projected to have $24 million in cap space next summer. Go after the 1C after the season. Get Tuch now. His salary right now fits under the cap. Kempe-Kopi-Tuch could do some real damage this year. It’s a fine dream…
 
The destination seems curious. Perhaps this is similar to the Ryan Smyth acquisition, and subsequent trade some years back? Edmonton boy leaves Edmonton for the bright lights of LA, misses home, and basically requests a trade back to Edmonton. Perhaps Phil and his wife mutually decided they wanted to return to Quebec asap. It would make sense that Alan Walsh(phils agent) chided the reporter who leaked the trade request, especially if the Kings were only going to send him back to MtL IF the return was relatively decent.. perhaps the agent was involved in the request to try and broker a fair deal between Montreal and the Kings, to ensure Phil could get back home.

A fine dream, but with what? What do the Kings trade away to first get Tuch and then 1C after the season?

If they trade QB for Tuch, they're left with 1 good and 1 unproven-but-possibly-good center. Not enough to make a push. If they trade for a capable rental C this season, too, that's already a lot of assets going out.

To then also trade for a 1C after Kopi retires, they'd need to scrub their asset cupboard to the bare bones.

I mean, no, I don't think Ken is incapable of doing this. But I do think it would be foolish...

Sounds entirely possible.

Phil left MTL after MTL had a very disheartening Finals loss. Perhaps he thought he needed a change of scenery, which LA definitely is compared to Montreal. I think this change of scenery effect has worn off and with Canadiens being a good team again, with need for veteran leadership again...it makes sense.
