***Playoffs Rd 1, GM 3 GDT - Oilers vs. Kings 4/21/23 on >>BSSC<< & TNT***

Korpisalo and Gavrikov were A+ additions. Blake deserves even more praise for that trade.

Seems like a slam-dunk we should try and re-sign them BOTH this summer.

Hope we've got the cap space.

But we really need to do that, IMO.

Nick & Daryl just clarified that even if he DID hit it with a high stick, the Oilers player touched it next & played it, which means play should continue and it would not be blown down normally.

IMO, Nick and Daryl's word is LAW.

This is most conclusive image of the incident I could find. This image is CLEARLY after Gabe's stick hit the puck as his stick is shown ABOVE the puck. So the puck was LOWER when the contact occurred. The puck was likely somewhere in the range of the black top lining on the boards. Gabe's left shoulder is half way up that "black lining" and he appears to be skating somewhat down at an angle so his shoulder was likely slightly higher when the impact occurred.

Inconclusive at best. By no mean definitive. As borderline as borderline gets, but it's the correct call.

That's in California if I'm not mistaken.

His goal was pure poetry.

Could that possibly be DEFEAT, tapping on the Oilers' chamber door?

PLEASE re-sign Korpi and Gavrikov! I know Gavrikov said he wants to test the UFA but both of them have been amazing pickups and will only help keep LA amazing.

Also... Imagine if Fiala was in the lineup... Mannn what a great addition before the season and seasons to come...

The officials I guess felt they did not have overwhelming evidence, but thank the Hockey Gods that the goal stood up. I really could have been (should have been?) overturned.

Maybe. We truly do not have indisputable evidence. And that’s the point of the anonymous GM. If we don’t have clear indisputable evidence then the goal must stand. So the refs made the right call. It was inconclusive.

It's so great that the Kings won. It's even better that the Oilers & their fans are melting down. They don't think any call against them was deserved. And they're trying to analyze that high stick video like it's the Zapruder film. The Kings aren't even playing as well as they could but are still finding a way to win. I thought we'd win in 7 but now I hope we win it in 5.

Go Kings Go!

The time to blow down the play was in real time. It’s unknowable on that replay if the stick touched, but I lean towards saying it did. Regardless, it’s not an inconclusive high stick that sent the puck into the net. Moore all alone sent the puck into the net. Oilers were not having a good PK.

Man, im sure glad the Kings showed up a bit more last night. The first 2 games were kinda depressing to watch with the oil suffocating us. Onward and forward! GKG!

Is anybody else sick of hearing about God err I mean McDavid!! Even Gretzky never got the kind of love this guy gets. He's a great player, but he's also immature and full of himself too.

Here's another way the Oilers can avoid bad calls from the ref: Try not taking stupid penalties such as Neutron-Bombs slashing in OT. That might help a bit. I'd say the same if situation were reversed.

jom

I dislike this Oilers team as much as the next Kings fan, but no, McDavid is not immature and full of himself. He's pretty calm and collected, actually. He's also the best player the league has seen since Gretzky and Lemieux. The dude just scored 152 points in a season! Also, no, Gretzky got just as much if not MORE love than McDavid. He was a household name even in America in non-hockey cities. He was on the cover of countless magazine, cereal boxes, video games, you name it. You could argue he is responsible for the existence of the majority of expansion teams since he entered the league.

The only difference is that today, if you are an avid hockey fan, you are flooded with hockey news because of the internet and its algorithms. You are consuming every bit of hockey news on a daily, hourly, minute by minute basis in a way no one in the 80's and 90's could possibly dream of. So maybe it feels like you are being exposed to McDavid hype more than Gretzky, but your perception is skewed due to technology. And the hype is deserved. He is THAT good.

Now if you want to talk about other players on the Oilers being immature I can agree. Nurse, Kane, and Draisaitl have clearly shown that they are undisciplined and whine every time they get caught commuting obvious penalties. The Oilers absolutely have the talent to win the cup, but if they don't reach that potential it will be because of dumb stuff like what Nurse and Draisaitl pulled in last night's game, NOT because of anything McDavid did or did not do.

I'll get down off my soap box now

McDavid is great. No doubt about that. But maybe he shouldn’t be killing penalties? Both game winning goals for the Kings have been scored with McDavid on the ice as a PKer.

I have no particular problem with McDavid as a person or player. I've seen him do some excellent things in his personal life that go above and beyond. I think the fandom and sports announcers in particularly literally drooling over him and forgetting the opposing teams exists is really, really weird. Kane and Nurse can go F themselves, hard. They play to injure. Gotta be a lot of pressure on the dude. He's an =insane= player. Dry saddle as well. He just bitches and moans a lot more. But McDavid? No problems. Just hate him and his team :P

Oilers fans melting down about refs is hilarious - like that's the only determining factor. There actually is a whole hockey game being played around the refs that matters too. They are so disillusioned regarding penalties, being that's the team's whole damn game plan this year. Since they're so good on the PP you think they'd realize taking them nonstop is bad. But they are just BLATANT. What does 33 do? Kick a stick, my god. So then Nurse slew-foots the **** out of him and 33 goes flying. One's a lot worse than the other. What does 8 do? Barely tap into Kane I believe, so Kane boards Doughty. The "Nuge" breaks a stick in half. Other guy's throwing elbows and cross checks, right in front of ref. They just an angry, annoying group of players fueled by angry, annoying fans. Kings identity since.. 2012 has been heart and determination, and they've ran with that when they're winning. Hence the OT scores compared to Oil this year.

Is it time to put AI on the first line and drop QB down?

QB I think may have a break out game, and I've been hating hard on him all year. I hope he does, it's time enough in the season. But no I don't think we can be moving anyone around in game 4.

Buddy, Wayne Gretzky had a Saturday morning cartoon with Michael Jordan. McDavid isn’t even close to the hype Gretz got. It’s not possible in today’s media landscape.

Ok to be honest

I had to watch SportsNet feed first two games, insane Oiler homerism,

I had no idea stuff like this exists (hockey player commercials - this is just one I saw McDavid in, there were SO MANY):

(and 9/10 commercials are about gambling - you ok Canada?)

McDavid hype is pretty close to Crosby early in his career. That’s not to compare the players but more a result of the nature of how celebrity marketing in general was vastly different today vs. 12+ years ago.

If McDavid were in his prime in the days of huge national marketing campaigns (beyond sports gambling), late night talk show boom, ESPN Sportscenter as much watch TV, he would probably get close to Gretz in terms of penetration of the average non-hockey sports fan.
