***Playoffs Rd 1, GM 3 GDT - Oilers vs. Kings 4/21/23 on >>BSSC<< & TNT***

And here's what Sportsnet (Canada) had to say about the situation

Friedman said the fact that the puck hits Ekholm in the back after the apparent high stick but before Vilardi plays it along the ice does not matter — a high-stick infraction is only negated if the opposing team has possession of the puck.

Rule 80.1 doesn’t say anything about possession:

When a puck has been contacted by a high stick, the play shall be permitted to continue, provided that:

(i) the puck has been batted to an opponent (when a player bats the puck to an opponent, the Referee shall give the “washout” signal immediately. Otherwise, he will stop the play).

I have no particular problem with McDavid as a person or player. I've seen him do some excellent things in his personal life that go above and beyond. I think the fandom and sports announcers in particularly literally drooling over him and forgetting the opposing teams exists is really, really weird. Kane and Nurse can go F themselves, hard. They play to injure. Gotta be a lot of pressure on the dude. He's an =insane= player. Dry saddle as well. He just bitches and moans a lot more. But McDavid? No problems. Just hate him and his team :P

Oilers fans melting down about refs is hilarious - like that's the only determining factor. There actually is a whole hockey game being played around the refs that matters too. They are so disillusioned regarding penalties, being that's the team's whole damn game plan this year. Since they're so good on the PP you think they'd realize taking them nonstop is bad. But they are just BLATANT. What does 33 do? Kick a stick, my god. So then Nurse slew-foots the **** out of him and 33 goes flying. One's a lot worse than the other. What does 8 do? Barely tap into Kane I believe, so Kane boards Doughty. The "Nuge" breaks a stick in half. Other guy's throwing elbows and cross checks, right in front of ref. They just an angry, annoying group of players fueled by angry, annoying fans. Kings identity since.. 2012 has been heart and determination, and they've ran with that when they're winning. Hence the OT scores compared to Oil this year.

Exactly. this is where my mind has gone both this year and last when the Kings have played the Oilers in the playoffs. The Oilers are a textbook case of a team with a ton of talent that just don't "get" what winning in the playoffs is actually about. Not to say they can't get their act together or get very far on their talent alone, but they are currently their own worst enemy.

In contrast the Kings of 2012-2014 absolutely GOT it. They were big and physical but that didn't mean they were going out of their way to commit penalties after the whistle. Their physicality was just part of their game plan. They would keep pounding the opposing team on the fore-check, causing turnovers, and often frustrating the other team into taking retaliatory penalties. They let their game do the trash talking and let the opposing team get all bent out of shape.

The Oilers seem to be desperately trying to make a statement about how "tough" they are by committing those extra elbows, slashes, and cross-checks. They think that because it's the playoffs the refs will always let that kind of stuff go. And to some extent, the refs do let some of it go. But if you keep you pulling that crap you WILL get called for a penalty. Guys like Nurse, Kane, and Draisaitl are SHOCKED that their are still rules in the playoffs and whine to the refs endlessly, which only makes it worse for them.

Agreed.

I have absolutely no problem with McDavid. He's an incredible player making NHL speed look slow.

Now, Draisatl and Kane would be NOWHERE without him. They've got skills but have decided that being dirty and "over the line" is where they should play. And for that reason, I hope we send them and their crying, self-ordained fans home.

There's nothing in the rule book about possession by the other team in order to waive off a puck played with a high stick.

When a puck has been contacted by a high stick, the play shall
be permitted to continue, provided that:
(i) the puck has been batted to an opponent (when a player bats the

McDavid hype is pretty close to Crosby early in his career. That’s not to compare the players but more a result of the nature of how celebrity marketing in general was vastly different today vs. 12+ years ago.

If McDavid were in his prime in the days of huge national marketing campaigns (beyond sports gambling), late night talk show boom, ESPN Sportscenter as much watch TV, he would probably get close to Gretz in terms of penetration of the average non-hockey sports fan.

That might be true. It was a completely different world back then, not just from a media standpoint, but also because hockey had so much potential to grow if it got the right exposure. I'm still not sure McDavid has the same kind of charisma Gretzky has. Gretzky is no Magic Johnson but he has a decent sense of humor and was comfortable in front of the camera and kind of charming in a very polite Canadian kind of way.

Great point. Gretzky came along right at a time when US pop culture was suddenly interested in Canadians for the first time. Which is such an odd thing to even consider but I think it’s mostly true. And Gretz was basically the model Canadian for US born Gen Xers who had no interest in hockey.

More like he came along to a market that was absolutely primed to showcase having the best of anything. Being a Winner in LA was never enough, being the best always transcended.

McDavid’a talent is thrilling and worthy of all the celebration it gets. He may surpass Gretzky in points. For a while that didn’t seem possible…

…which is why he disappoints my ass with his immaturity. Being the best in the world isn’t good enough for him. He gets actively angry when challenged fairly. He embodies entitlement. He’s no stranger to cheap hits and after last night’s game he said the Oilers just aren’t getting the opportunities the Kings are getting. Refs didn’t keep McDavid off the scoreheet in games 1 and 2.

Anecdotal but really crystallized for me how I feel about McDavid. Was watching an EDM-DET game back in Feb. mcDavid is coming in on net and the only player back is Seider, who reads the play perfectly, matches McDavid’s every turn, and stands him up right before the net. McDavid never gets a shot off, but he grabs Seider’s stick and holds it away like a half-rate schoolyard bully and glares at him. He got beat on an awesome, honest play by a very talented young player and pouted like a kid half his age.

Kopitar doesn’t pull that garbage. Bergeron doesn’t either. Neither does Pavelski, Toews, or any number of star centers in this league.

Honestly, the best part of the OT finish was seeing Nurse, lost on the play, sliding on his knees with a perfect view of the winning goal.

Even on the oilers boards the back to back plays by nurse on both pp ot winners is amazing. His decision is so wrong in both cases i think its actually systematic, and something the kings are exploiting. We all love talking about how a player isnt worth his paycheck, but those kinds of decisions, so automatically done by a player are born of repitition, and that means coaching.

The funniest part of this is of the pairing, Eichel is by far the entitled one....

He got completely lost on AI's goal, too. He's getting exposed in this series, badly.

You guys should also consider that Gretzky won FOUR Stanley Cups (and was in another final) before he came to LA. Today, McDavid is nowhere near that. If he were traded to he Kings this summer it would be a big deal but nowhere near the attention Gretzky had in 1988, IMO. Your everyday average American Joe sports fan knew who Wayne was....I don't think you can say that about McDavid today.

Woodcroft seems a little smug and to me.
"The greatest player says so so we should get the call". Suck a d---.
He said post game again they've carried most of the play and "our plan of putting hard miles on them is working" ie.. play to injure.
It's pretty clear to see that's what they're doing.
Gabe, along with Viktor & Kempe, is now gonna be targeted Sunday night.

Speaking of Viktor...what a damn warrior.

He got completely lost on AI's goal, too. He's getting exposed in this series, badly.

Cos he's not really that good at straight up hockey, he's gotta goon it up to have an impact.
I mean, where was he going on AI's goal?
And his poke check let Moore open for the GWG.
Play Nurse more, coach!!

He’s a 3rd pairing defenseman playing 1st pairing minutes.

He might be, but alex edler or durzi wouldn't do that. Im telling you guys he walked into that video room and Jay and his crew have a good chance of losing this team because of **** like that. Even the Kings PK stopped that dumb ****ing forward stack and d step to the weak side.
