***Playoffs Rd 1, GM 6 GDT - Oilers vs. Kings 4/29/23 >>7:00pm<< on BSSC & TBS***

The road to the Cup just got a lot easier for Edmonton (and other teams like Toronto, for that matter). HUGE upset in Boston.

The 135 points are a WASTE. There is no way this team compares to others in that stratosphere if you don't win a Cup. Teams like the 1977 Canadiens didn't lose to teams 40 points behind them in the standings. In fact, they didn't lose a game (let alone lose a series) to the riff-raff of the NHL at the time. My disappointment with these kind of losses by top teams is that this just tells me what I've believed for a long time now: The regular season is meaningless....and it's getting worse, IMO. I liked it a whole lot better when the top teams are consistently good through the complete season not just the playoffs. Oh well, times change...

The other bad part of this is that the Maple Loafs get an easier trip to the finals....maybe....we'll see.

And a 2nd year expansion team just eliminated the reigning cup champions. I don't love that either.

craziest day ever in the history of the NHL? I think this is an even bigger upset than Round 1 in 2019 (when pretty much every series was won by the underdog)

Unlike the days of the original 21, when 16/21 teams made the playoffs, all playoff teams now are good teams. In those days, you could have mediocre if not terrible teams still in the playoffs (like the '82 Kings). Not now. Even tomorrow, Rangers / Devils, both are good teams, and one will be done.

So my takeaway from today is the Kings are the only eliminated Pacific division team. :(

It would be nice to see Seattle do well if only to antagonize the Vegas fans.

Fun fact - Since the President's Trophy was awarded in '85-86, 8 teams have won the Stanley Cup & 8 teams have gone out in the 1st round. Also, don't forget that besides the record setting President's Trophy winner & the defending Stanley Cup champion, the Lightning, who were in the finals 3 years in a row, are also out in the 1st round.

I suppose Toronto & Dallas have an easier path to the finals. I actually picked the Stars to come out of the West. I think they're underrated based on their record& I like their goaltending. In the East I picked the Rangers, which may or may not be smart after tomorrow. That one's also based on goaltending.

Also, I know a lot of people like to root for the team that beat them. Not me. I don't think losing to the eventual champion makes it any easier. And also the Oilers & their fans are a bunch of whiny punks. All they did was cry & blame others when things didn't go their way. I guess now that they beat us the league hasn't plotted to keep them from winning. Or will that conspiracy theory be resurrected if they lose to Vegas? Anyway, the Oilers & their fans can eat D's.

Well, I can't argue with that. During the 80s the way they compartmentalized the teams into divisions and strictly did divisional playoffs. That was a train wreck IMO. It is a lot better now but the NHL still wants to have "brackets" to cater to the gambling. It would be better if they did a 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, then re-rank the teams to the next round to give the regular season a bit more meaning.

Wow...who do you root for when Toronto plays Edmonton in the finals? It will be a Whine Fest!

Same here. Taking solace in losing to the eventual Cup champ is a lie fans tell themselves to believe their team is close. Maybe they are, maybe they aren’t. Sometimes match-ups just aren’t a fit. But regardless, this line of thinking is especially hollow when your team loses in the first round.

Wishing for any team to beat EDM - even VGK. I think DAL could stand a good shot too if it works out that way. Oettinger is maybe the best goalie left. Certainly in the West.

F the Oilers...always and forever.
Rooting for them is like rooting for the Ducks or Sharks...F that noise!!

I do believe the Oilers will beat Las Vegas and might do it in 4 or 5.

Well, something finally went right. The Rangers lost....that's always a good thing.
