Punk...

I preordered it already so cd should be coming soon!
Tony Sly tribute: Listened to it quite a few times now. Think my favorites are Strung Out's cover of Soulmate and American Steel's cover of Dark Corner.

Interesting that the cd I got cuts off at 26 songs, but there are 7 more songs available on digital download. (which we get a code for with the cd). Thought the cd was a little heavy with Tony Sly individual songs. Would've liked a bit more nufan, however the 7 additional songs are pretty much all band songs. How can I complain anyway.

A bit somber at times, and a few weak links I tend to skip through, but overall a pretty solid collection of covers made in their own unique way. Snuff's weird mariachi style cover of On the Outside is pretty interesting. Karina Denike's voice on biggest lie is so haunting yet strangely peaceful in a somber way. Ending of joey cape doing international you day with the crowd joining in for last couple words is a fantastic way to end the cd.

Been listening to it over and over, and still hits home.

Here's a documentary of why Judge broke up a year after they started. A year later & I was done with the SxE scene as well. Scene got stale & the message was lost with the new kids coming into the scene.

Back in the day there were always groups, or "factions" if you will, that were trouble for the rest of us. I was your every day "street punk" btw, you know, liberty spikes, jack boots, painted leather jacket ect ect. I was a pretty happy go lucky punk. Shows were fun and carefree for the most part. But then you had certain groups that ruined it for everyone.

First it was skinheads and Nazi Punks, racist violent *******s! Then it was the Suicidals, violent *******s who dressed like cholos and loved to start fights and jump people in the pit.

The came SxE. They started out ok, but then some of them turned into sort of a punk rock Taliban. Walking around in groups and hassling people about drinking or smoking. I remember one show a group of them walked around and snatched cigs from the mouths of some people and " confiscated" beer, pouring it out in front of the people they took it from. I was having some brews with a few friends watching all this and then they got to us. " If you touch our beer we will kick your teeth down your throat." I advised them. "Oh yeah!" one of them replied, "Yeah." We stared at each other for a few seconds and then he pointed at us and said "**** you guys!" And they stormed off. In the show they gave us us dirty looks the rest of the night and we just smiled back. Good thing I was with friends or I would have not been able to stand against them.

Then a couple of years later there was a story on 20/20 or 60 minutes about how violent the SxE scene got in Utah, actually beat a couple of kids to death. I don't know what the hell happened to that scene but it went bad quick.

then there was that group from boston called FSU:
Punk Rock Fight Club | Culture News | Rolling Stone

Yeah, I remember that story. Disturbing yet not surprising.

I could not get into "hardcore", just could not stand the growling and Cookie Monster vocals, every band just sounded the same to me. On a side note, pretty ironic a punk guy saying something like that yeah? But I just could not get into it. Then there was the violence. It was claimed they were just looking out for each other or only beating those who had it coming but those guys would pound you if you just looked at them wrong or accidentally bumped into them. Wear the wrong shirt? Not for me man!

That's why I've always sorta hated hardcore.

i don't mind hardcore, but it's not my favorite. i think some guys just used it as an excuse to behave the way they did/do.
i think there's just this primal thing some guys go through and for some, it manifests more violently. i asked one of my straight edge friends what made him go that way and he said when he was 15, the sXe/hardcore scene just gave him an outlet to go "AGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!". he's not particularly angsty or anything, i think it's just typical of the way i and some people i know felt in general towards life and the world. for some people, it's a way to connect (to the music and the scene) and let out their primal scream. for others, they just use the environment as an excuse to be violent douchers. in my friend's case, he's a vegetarian who doesn't smoke or drink booze. probably doesn't even drink caffeine. all i've seen him drink is water. he's totally cool though--worked with the peace corps in africa and doesn't care if his friends want to eat a steak in front of him or i want to have a beer while he eats his vegetarian chili and drinks water. haha. too bad they can't all be like that.

ya, i heard about it. it sold out fast. monday night in weho though. hard for me to pull off when my kid has school the next morning. i just hope that once the album is out, they'll do a full fledged tour and come closer to where i live. i heard it's very likely AM! is finished after that.
HOWEVER, i got tickets to see 2 nights of the band brand new where they're going to play 2 albums per night in their entirety 10 minutes away from my house. they're both school nights also so i hope i can get my neighbor to babysit.....

Yeah this whole "find a babysitter" thing is becoming a hindrance. I'm still debating if i get one for the masked intruder/less than jake/anti-flag show later this month. I'm still a bit bitter I had to skip the H20/Alkaline Trio/New Found Glory show recently. (I heard some funny stories about a jay z or rihanna or some crap show at staples center going on the same night, as both sets of fans mixed upon exit)

too bad, troubadour would be a great venue to see them at.

ha, that's awesome. ya I was pretty bummed about missing that show also. great lineup. I picked the wrong time (but oh so right in terms of how uncrowded it was) to go on vacation.

I totally agree. the troubadour is a really great venue. especially for AM!

To my ex-roommate's dismay, these are perennially on my Christmas playlist:

Descendents - Christmas Vaction

Fear - F' Christmas (censored version for LGK sake):

Out of curiosity, I added the uncensored version as a link only to see if the message board auto-censor also detects so-called profanity in a Web page title when parsing the URL...
Fear - **** Christmas - YouTube

Yes, it does. Go ahead and click through if you enjoy the dulcet tones of Lee Ving cussing.
