well that sucks. I still love it, toilet paper machine guns, balloons, johnny quest characters skanking across stage, and all. They were really good. And they were really stoked to play the pac man theme song about 14 times in a row (as apparently the cereal is coming back and they got hired by proctor and gamble to do the theme song).

And they played an interlude of We're All Dudes. Only about 15 seconds of it, but that pretty much made my year.

reel big fish ended just about every song in their set friday night by breaking into "She's Gonna Break Soon", pretty funny. And by the way on saturday night played about 10 different musical versions of suburban rhythm, including a death metal version, which was awesome.

damn the detroit bar, that takes me back

it's ok, no one got hurt and i got a new, much nicer car that 13 years later i am still driving. :grin:

i had to park that car in a questionable neighborhood because there is no parking at the detroit bar. well, there is... just not enough spaces in the lot... the show was good, but short and over by 9:30. i would've liked to hang out and maybe take a pic with jim but i didn't want to walk to my car late at night. i wasn't too crazy about the venue because the stage is in a corner and the rest of the venue is an eatery/bar so you are basically cramming a crowd into a corner.

woohoo got permission from the wife, so I just got tickets to see Good Riddance April 16th at the troubadour. One of like 5 record release shows they're doing in CA. Love the venue, and one of my favorite bands, I feel I have to see them every time they play until they are no more (officially). And A Wilhelm Scream are opening, not too shabby.

So let's recap, we've got a new strung out album upcoming, a new good riddance album upcoming, and I just read that Millencolin will be putting a new album out in a couple months on epitaph that will represent "somewhat of a return to their roots".

What year is this?!!
 
i preordered that millencolin LP because the little snippet i heard off it reeled me in! can't wait to get it.

Well, to be completely honest, I don't know what to think just yet. There was a s**tton of information to gather in 2 hours. I might need it to marinate for a few days. Right now, I would say it was ok. I think its one of those documentaries that would have been better on DVD with the added footage. It just seemed too crammed together. 2 hours didn't do it justice and actually hurt it quite a bit.

The first hour was '80-'85 (my favorite time period) and like we talked about on FB Dave, it was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be...The Ian, Henry and Discord records show. There's obviously really no way around that. It spent too much time on the "Straight Edge" movement and why the "New Mosh Pit is too Violent". That time could have been used better. If you're watching this documentary, you probably don't need a 25 minute dissertation on the SE movement. Ian and Henry did have a couple funny stories though.

The one thing that really bugged the hell out of me was there was only about 1 minute total of anything Bad Brains...in the whole movie. How can you completely disregard the band that pretty much started it all in DC? Did I miss the memo that DC Hardcore started with Minor Threat and SOA in 1980? Who knew? Apparently The Ramones, The Cramps and Iggy had more more influence than BB, TI and any West Coast band, ftm.

Also noted: Barely anything on Youth Brigade. Government Issue and Marginal Man had a few blurbs but nothing noteworthy, although various band members are interviewed about the DC Scene. Kenny Inouye, Brian Baker, Danny Ingram, Boyd Farrell, John Stabb and Jeff Nelson have lots of face time, which is good. Stabb and Nelson are funny as s***!

Hour 1 closed out with me wanting more substance and less glossing over things. And they probably could have left Thurston Moore completely out of the movie. Not enough film space for his and Ian's egos.

The second hour was '86-'90 and spent way too much time on "Revolution Summer", politics, causes and Emocore. I wanted more music and less droning on of political opinions. Not nearly enough Gray Matter, Dag Nasty, and Rites of Spring. Also, too many somewhat small, obscure and godawful bands in this hour. It got boring pretty fast.

I'm really surprised there wasn't more Fugazi. It was leading up to that and then just fell flat. In fact, Guy Picciotto was only mentioned 5 times in the whole movie. Pretty sad if you ask me.

Just way too much stuff and ZERO time to really, really enjoy it. Like I said, this probably should have went straight to DVD so we could get a better grasp on all of it. Too much, too fast kind of ruined it for me.

Ultimately, I was hoping for less stories/political stuff and more raw footage. I wanted more tier 2 bands and less tier 1&3. I wanted more music and less explanations of what Straight Edge and Revolution Summer is. It didn't happen and I walked out somewhat unfulfilled.

Definitely see it though. My expectations could be completely different from yours.

Id give it 6/10 Vomiting Lux Interiors (Jeff Nelson joke)


Edit: I COMPLETELY forgot about how good Void was! I hadn't thought about them in years.

Damn dude. That's disappointing. Guy Picciotto was the talent behind Fugazi. Rites of Spring & One Last Wish were great. You knew the early years were going to be about Ian & Henry. 2nd tier bands such as Dag Nasty, ROS, Three, Scream, Marginal Man, Embrace were all great.

No BB? Wtf is that?

Btw, the faith/void record is a classic. Void side kicks major arse! I have so many scratches on that side.

Yeah, I was disappointed quite frankly.

The lack of more back story/influences has to have been because of time. I cant help but think "We liked The Bad Brains (insert 20 second vid of HR going apeschit on stage to "Pay to Cum"). They influenced us." was all they could fit into the movie. Has to be! The '86-'90 hour really needed to be trimmed down to make room for the tier 2 bands from the '83-'87 era.

Scott Crawford tries entirely too hard to "explain" everything, mainly the "scene" and doesn't let the music do the explaining. You know what I mean? Its hard to put into words.

This movie needs at minimum, 4 hours of time.

That's a f'ing travesty. BB started it all. Did you ever check out the foo fighters sonic highway doc about dc? That was great. You know how much I love dc punk/post punk. I have to go see it.
