Spence Traded for Picks to Ottawa

Did the player a solid but f***ed the team in the process.

What was the urgency in moving a quality defenseman on a team friendly deal at $1.7 million? Holland better have something lined up. But the way the Kings tend to operate, I doubt it.
f***ed the team how?

He’s a 3rd pairing defenseman that you need to avoid playing against McDrai. They turned him into a turnstile every time he was on the ice, and he was too small to push them around.

For an undersized, 5-7 defenseman that can run the 2nd power play unit.

He wanted an opportunity to play more, and Clarke surpassed him. Holland moved him to a place where he might get that chance, and did him a solid.
I know there are people who liked Spence. But the reality is that there isn’t a fit here for him.
Spence is mobile. He competes. He’s a team guy from what we hear. But there is not much of an upside with him. He’s pretty much reached his ceiling.
The fact he was clearly available and this is what his return was tells us he just isn’t valued that much.
This isn’t poor asset management. It’s that Spence doesn’t add to or fill a righty d-group with DD and Clarke here. And I don’t believe the playoff series changed his value. He is what he is.

The Kings do need a bigger and meaner defenseman. They also need a bigger shot from the point. That’s not what Spence brings.

Again, I know that there are fans who like Spence. I didn’t mind him. I just feel the Kings need a different player right now. Spence is not a player who will determine how the next season goes. He was never going to be an impact player in that regard.

Re comments about Durzi, my main criticism with him was that he really did not learn from his mistakes and I do agree that he was too selfish. He was a bit too free-wheeling for how the Kings defense was structured. Durzi was mostly about Durzi.

Obviously the Kings have something or someone in mind to fill the hole left by trading Spence. I’m curious to see what and who replaces him.

Agreed. Spence was a feel good story with his unique hockey background, but he’s no Lane Hutson. Those are really the only sub 6’ defenders you can afford to put on the ice, and sometimes it’s still a wash.

Folks, you don't get it. Spence is a good player--for his size. He got totally abused by the Oilers big forwards to the point that he couldn't stay in the lineup. He's another Blake Lizotte.
I think we all get that. It’s not the trade it’s the return. As in nothing that helps the team now and odds are won’t help them in the future.

Holland said he wants to give Hiller a fourth line he can trust.
You think a team like NSH wouldn’t want Spence? Cole Smith is 6’3”. 163 hits last year and 235 the year before. NSH says no? I don’t think so.

CLB may lose Fabbro. If so they could use a guy like Spence. Mathieu Olivier had over 300 hits last year.

Holland couldn’t flip Spence for a physical fourth player - which is a real need right now - anywhere in the league?

Exactly!

Spence had the second highest point shares of the Kings D last season.
4-24-28 in 79 GP with a +23. And this is the return that we got for a guy making 1.7 million next season? If we didn't have the playoff fiasco, the Kings would be looking to try and trade Spence for low first or high second. He'd be undersized but in demand. But Hiller and then the front office found a way to tank his value in no time. And then he's dealt for futures.

The Kings are adding another million in cap space. Whoop-dee-doo. You know what adds cap space? A guy who is +23 and makes 1.7 million. So instead of Spenny we'll have Joel Edmundson making nearly 4 million a season on the 3rd pairing.

I hope Holland has a plan in the next week. Right now this feels like the same old Kings just making random moves with no overarching plan.

We've gone from trying to package Spence + Turc for Bowen Byram to trading Spence for a hodgepodge of middle round picks. So why should anyone be excited about that?

That’s what bugs me about it. Why now? If we need to trade for Byram for example, Spence won’t do it, but he’s a good piece. If you need the money freed up for gavrikov or marner then why not sign them first? Don’t get it.

Take out our own biases and look at the player on paper. Good player who albeit played sheltered minutes was still a regular on one of the best d lineups in league. Also 23 so room to grow. And yes, guys making low salaries have added value in their own right.

Player for player trades still happen. Very disappointed this wasn’t one of those.

Summer is not the time for rationality and level headed analysis. Could you please re-write this with more hyperbole and emotional personal bias.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
We had the best defenseman in history and traded him for a couple of low draft picks. We have completely missed a great opportunity to be the odds-on favorite next year. Our management is horrible and we should fire everyone including the arena staff.

Yes and no. I think while Spence played pretty well, (better than some of the other D) in last year's playoffs, the Kings were still pretty much swept. So, it was still not good enough. This year he seemed to loose a little confidence and his game suffered. I am sorry he is gone, but if he is replaced with an upgrade I can be ok with it.

If he gets replaced with Miller, I think that would be a good upgrade.
