Movie theater fires back after uproar over women-only showings of 'Wonder Woman'

The nature of the complaints are predictable. And just as predictable is the way the theater has responded to some of them directly (and hilariously). And, overall, they've added more all-women screenings and the program has expanded to their other locations.

Locally, WHERE THE HECK IS THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE WE WERE PROMISED YEARS AGO??? Heck, I'da gone outta my way to see it there (at an all-gender screening, of course).

While I agree that it's a "man's world" and as men we have extra privileges that women don't have, being exclusive and going completely opposite isn't the way to do it, imo. We should be promoting equality, not pitting one against the other. Doing this doesn't get the message across in a positive way. Plus, wouldn't it be more beneficial to have the young men who will see this movie be present for a celebration of women?

To start with, it was originally A screening. One. Not "We're only going to show this movie for women during it's theatrical run." So a group of girls from the high school can go, or a mom could take her young daughter for a special evening out, or the group work friends, or the one girl who has the night off and wanted to go on her own anyway. Wouldn't that be a cool night for them?

And then there's the fact that this isn't about equality. It's specifically FOR an underserved group. A highlight to the fact and a nod to it. This group isn't normally recognized specifically, so let's do it this once. Like the occasional National "Insert Profession Here" Day. Having that day isn't a big ol' f*** you to every other profession.

Nurse's Day? F*** you, doctors!
Longshoreman's Day? F*** you, truck drivers!
Steel Worker's Day? F*** you, miners!

See. It doesn't work that way. Unless you really wanna make it that way.

Or, if you prefer, think of it like a Father's Day screening of... let's say Guardians of the Galaxy 2. A screening only for men and their fathers and sons. Are daughters and wives left out? Yes. But it's for a screening on one particular day, and the movie's about that thing, so we can be cool with it the one time, right?

This doesn't have to be an either or situation. Making something special for someone isn't an attack on anyone else. Teach THAT to the young men or the dudes complaining. That you'll still have yours (and in this case, probably more than most), so don't be afraid to let them have theirs, too (especially when they have very little, if any).

Someone's job (nurse or steel worker) is not remotely the same as someone's gender or race. You can't really compare those. And inequality IS at the root of it. If all was equal, they wouldn't be doing this promotion. I get the gesture but I'm just not in favor of "women only" or "men only" anymore than I am "whites only" or "blacks only". They could do it in another way that would still encourage more women to go without a ban on men. My memory is foggy but wasn't that done for Sex and the City?

HOW WILL JOSS WHEDON CHANGE THE JUSTICE LEAGUE?
http://nerdist.com/how-will-joss-whedon-change-the-justice-league/

The Snyder family’s tragedy is still at the forefront of our thoughts on this Memorial Day, so we want to take the opportunity to reach out to anyone who is suffering from depression and mental health issues. You are not alone, and there are resources available to help you and anyone you know who may also be struggling with these issues. Many organizations exist for the very purpose of being there for you in your time of need, and we’ve listed a few of them below:

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a 24-hour, toll-free, confidential suicide prevention hotline (1-800-273-8255) available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. There is also a 24-hour an Online Chat option available.
Crisis Text Line is a 24/7, nationwide crisis-intervention text-message hotline. Text TALK to 741-741.
HopeLine is a suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline that can be called or texted. They operate by using active listening to support and reflect through any kind of crisis, even if not suicide related.
The Trevor Project is a nationwide organization that provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth.
The Nerdist team wants to remind everyone out there that you don’t have to be alone with your pain. It’s important to remember that there really are people out there who want to help you.

"Man Baby?" A certain head of state? mhihi:

Anyhooow, y'all can have all the controversy you want. Not me. Tomorrow is Wonder Woman day and it will be GLORIOUS!! :woot:

I haven't been so excited about a comic book movie since The Dark Knight. And I haven't been so excited about a movie release since Pan's Labyrinth.

Then again, when most people are excited about the latest blockbuster, I am like...

Hopefully, this is the turning point for DC Movies. I'll even forgive Batman V Superman. ;)

Happy Wonder Woman day! :woot:

The longtime voice of Wonder Woman speaks

While actress Gal Gadot will wield the golden lasso on the silver screen this Friday, she?s not the only one to slip into the tiara of Princess Diana of Themyscira. One of the longest-running voices of Wonder Woman is actress Susan Eisenberg, who was first heard as the superhero in the 2001 animated series ?Justice League? and sequel series ?Justice League Unlimited.? She has continued to perform the role for more than 15 years across a range of projects

Eisenberg didn't do the voice for that Wonder Woman (2009) animated movie though. Felicity did. :P

Just saw the "Batman and Bill" documentary on Hulu about the long process to get Bill Finger his proper due for his part in creating many of the most essential aspects of Batman, including his look, origin story and the primary villains. 10/10

"Wonder Woman" was a damn fine movie. Damn fine.

It was fun, energetic, and moved forward well. That was greatly aided by the fact that the plot was pretty simple and direct. The action sequences were big but weren't forced. And the supporting cast was small, but everyone did their thing well.

And, of course, Gal Gadot.... Tough but vulnerable, determined but hopeful, accepting but unwavering. The writing set her up but she knocked it all outta the park. There were moments where the tone of a line could really make it swing wildly from nacho-cheesy groanable or teeth-grittingly terrible, but she struck the right chord all throughout the movie. She was far and away the best part of "Batman V Superman" and is a big reason this movie outshines any other other DC movies by a countries mile* so far.

The strength of this movie alone just *might* get me to go see "Justice League" in a theater. We'll have to see trailers and such when we get closer. But I'll be paying more attention, if only to see more of this version of Wonder Woman.

And if they wanna toss in Melissa Benoist's energetic and optimistic Supergirl in there, too, that would be fine by me.

* I meant to type the 's' in that phrase. Limiting it to just one country mile would be a disservice to "Woman Woman" compared to the rest of the DC stuff.

I feel like I'm on some sort of Wonder Woman high. As a lady, it was sooooooo awesome to finally see a female superhero leading a movie (Catwoman and Elektra do NOT count. Ugh.) I got a little emotional seeing all of the young girls in our theatre dressed up as Wonder Woman. I watch all of the other comic book movies and love seeing my favorite male characters onscreen, but there's nothing like seeing another woman up on the screen just ****ing kicking ass and actually being the star of a comic book movie for once. I'm seriously so thrilled with this film.

I have been trying to collect my thoughts because since I have been foaming at the mouth with anticipation ever since this movie was announced, I didn't want to go into a full blown Wonder Woman/DC Comics geekout ala this was the bessssssstttttttttttt thinggggggggggg evvvaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I am able to show some restraint from time to time, mind you! mhihi:

What we did get was a really good job that first and foremost did a great job in establishing the movie Wonder Woman without getting bogged down. Having it set during WWI as opposed to the expected WWII was an interesting choice and something different from the many Nazi/Wonder Woman stories we have already gotten. 'Sides, I have been really into WWI lately due reading about it and such due to the Centennial, haha. The setting resulted is some great action sequences and it was probably a more violent movie that I was expecting, but it did fit with the nature of the setting.

Take all of this mixed with some comedic moments and poignancy, and we have a well rounded movie.

And somebody should GIF that entire island battle sequence for reals.

I am glad (and that's an understatement) that this didn't turn out to be a flop either critically or commercially. It shouldn't be a big deal that in 2017 having a woman directed Wonder Woman movie gets made, but due to the history of movies, it is. So it is an exciting time. It's the movies us Wonder Woman fanboys/girls deserve. And an opportunity with those not really familiar with the character to find out how awesome she is.

Congrats, Warners, DC, Jenkins, and everybody else. Score one for the home team! :awesome:

And as I promised, I now forgive Batman v Superman, haha. ;)
