‘Wonder Woman’ Director Patty Jenkins Talks about Her Hopes for the Sequel [Updated]

Still not signed. WB is going to have to pay. And the only choice they have is to bring in another female director. Otherwise the bad press is just going to be too much. Without going into too much detail, simply because I don't feel like arguing anymore...I don't really like this. I don't think she brought anything spectacular to WW. No real signature. So it's not really fair the predicament WB finds themselves in. And part of me hopes that they do overpay her, and the second movie is more of the same. That way folks would judge the movie rather than the whole empowerment angle. WW was a pretty by the numbers movie. Origin/fish out of water/boss fight with a vague CGI mess. Sorry...my opinion.

As expected, I am all over this! :woot:

I guess a doc about Wonder Woman and Marston was gonna get made eventually. ;)

They should make a doc about Robert Kanigher too, haha. He was the main Wonder Woman writer for years and years after the original creator. Unlike Marston, he wasn't fixated on bonadage, haha, but that didn't stop him from coming up with wacky stories and villains including the infamous Egg Fu.

However, a new report from Variety sparks a little concern as the team behind the film is scrambling for some last minute reshoots. While reshoots and additional filming is not uncommon, the ones for Justice League are particularly lengthy and expensive, with Warner Brothers?spending approximately $25 million on extensive reshoots that have dragged on for roughly two months in London and Los Angeles.?

Ben Affleck Talks ‘Justice League’ Reshoots, Calls It an “Interesting Product of Two Directors”

And now in speaking with EW, Batman himself Ben Affleck has spoken up about the experience of making a movie that has two different directors:

“It’s a little bit unorthodox. Zack had a family tragedy, and stepped off, which was horrible. For the movie, the best person we could’ve possibly found was Joss. We got really lucky that he stepped in.” Affleck, who helmed the Best Picture-winning Argo, describes the resulting film as “an interesting product of two directors, both with kind of unique visions, both with really strong takes. I’ve never had that experience before making a movie. I have to say, I really love working with Zack, and I really love the stuff we’ve done with Joss.”

As for the extent of the reshoots, Affleck downplayed their significance by pointing out that Argo and Gone Baby Gone both had days of reshoots, but the scale of this Justice League additional photography—not to mention Affleck’s aforementioned comments—seems to suggest there’s more than just nipping and tucking going on.

Regardless, Affleck seems pleased with how the film and the DCEU as a whole are turning out while also seemingly admitting that BvS fell short of his own expectations:

“This is a really nice time to work in DC. They’re hitting their stride. They’re getting it right. It’s starting to feel like it’s really working.”

That “it’s starting to” line would suggest Affleck maybe wasn’t thrilled with Batman v Superman and/or Suicide Squad, but no one can deny that Wonder Woman was a huge boon for the DCEU and looks to be showing the way forward. Given this tonal shift and the dual directors, watching Justice League should be a fascinating experience come the film’s November 17th release.

The Latest ‘Justice League’ Rumor Hints That Joss Whedon’s Changes Are More Extensive Than Just A Change In Tone

The issue with this rumor isn’t that changes are happening to Snyder’s film or that the studio wants to adjust the film’s tone. That was always expected before Snyder’s departure and Whedon’s involvement drove that home. But basically undercutting Snyder and calling his version of the film “unwatchable” isn’t fair to the director, even if he hasn’t enjoyed critical praise for his entries into the series up to this point. Considering the public reason for his departure from the film, this type of rumor just seems to be off base in terms of its focus. Whatever version of the film was complete when Snyder departed, it couldn’t have been a completed product worthy of that type of description.

On top of that, this sounds similar to the criticism that was levied at Patty Jenkins and Wonder Woman before its release, calling that production a “mess.” Not only did that turn out to be false considering the critical and box office success, but it also was another rumor attributed to sources inside Warner Bros. with knowledge of the production.

While the Justice League rumor could indeed be true or at least features enough truth to support it, the avenue it takes just is not fair to Snyder. Even if you believe he’s the worst director working today, it seems like the worst time to call his work trash in need of another director to sweep up the mess. Changing the ending, changing the tone, and re-shooting scenes would all make perfect sense and are normal, especially for such a big production. Not every major change requires dramatic gossip to make it work.
