The Avengers/Marvel movies

Saw Guardians this weekend.

It was a good time, to be sure, but it didn't quite tickle me the way it seems to've done to others.

Why? I have some ideas, especially your admitted casual fan status (what made this sing for me were references and depictions of **** I loved as a kid just jumping off the page...but deep geek stuff).
What worked...didn't. Legit curious. Not trying to wind you up.

Drax is the shiz

That is all.
(I almost laugh constantly as he delivers, the stuff with him and Mantis is GOLD! [not Sovereign gold, because that gold is tainted])

I can't really speak to the absence of something. Whatever knocked it outta the park for you was just a solid double for me, I think. Not sure why. No structural issues with the movie. No glaring issues.

I mean, I had zero problems with it. And I think I got pretty much everything. I really liked Russel. Mantis was fine. The gold people were decent (Hey! Ben Browder! And I like Elizabeth Debicki). I got Starhawk (though the other characters, I assumed, were part of the deeper cannon). Yondu and the "original" fin. Baby Groot was cute.

But where all of those things seemed to be at a 10 out of 10 for most people, they were just a solid 7 for me.

‘Guardians 2’: Why James Gunn Is Now the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Biggest Winner
http://variety.com/2017/film/news/g...ol-2-james-gunn-box-office-marvel-1202411515/

Shameless James Gunn is a good guy plug. Seriously...very happy for a someone I have always admired. If Marvel/Feige is smart, and all the evidence is there, they will turn the next 'phase' over to Gunn to oversee, in the same position Whedon was unable to navigate. They have hinted as much by saying that the next phase may not be a phase. Embrace the odd, turn the Marvel Universe and superhero movies in general, on their heads. Let's get weird. No spoilers till tomorrow, but with one of the mid credits scenes they have the harbinger of that change right there, ready to go.

GOTG2 spoilers!!!!!!!

Kevin Feige on ‘Guardians 2′, the Spider-Man Deal, and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and Beyond

Like I said earlier...smart man. And although I am really kinda hard on the Marvel films, I do admit...they have DC beat as far as process. I like the weird Marvel, Dr. Strange was not without faults...but I did enjoy it. Guardians is just aces. Both films. And I REALLY like the look and feel of Thor:Ragnarok. Now let's get Man Thing, Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, and the more trippy horror weirdo cosmic stuff and I will be saying MAKE MINE MARVEL in no time.

The Ragnarok trailer in 3d is something else, man. I can't freaking wait.

Moon Knight would work much better on the big screen than on TV. The subject matter about his mental illness could very easily slip into trivial melodrama in an episodic format - the character can be so brutal that the juxtaposition of violence and regret would have a lot more weight in the theater. The monochromatic color scheme could be a cinematographer's dream.

As far as Vol. 2, I thought it was terrific. Probably could have been dialed down in segments - it's turned up to 11 from start to stop. The Groot stuff threatens to be too much during the opening, but Gunn struck a really nice balance after that and the cuteness never got in the way. Drax and Mantis were a hoot.

* sigh *

I jumped off the "Agents of SHIELD" bandwagon a while ago and I have pretty much NO idea who any of these folks are. It might end up being really good, but I think I'm gonna pass on "Inhumans."

Maybe I've reached a saturation point with the Marvel stuff, especially since "Agents of SHIELD" barely ever had any impact on the greater overall universe.

I'm pretty sure I can stick with the movies and be okay.

And maybe the stuff on Netflix. If I can get going with the second half of "Luke Cage" and suffer through "Iron Fist" (I heard it went wonky in the second half). I'll want more of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

Crossover from the Them Parks thread, but more relevant here, maybe.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: Mission BREAKOUT! Hints at 2 Major Additions to The MCU

The new ride is set inside the Collector’s Fortress, and while guests are waiting in line, they can see tons of MCU “artifacts” on display among the Collector’s fabled collection. Among these display case items are Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agomotto and a jacket from one of the members of the Nova Corps. But it’s two artifacts in particular that has raised the eyebrows of Marvel fans who got to preview the ride early before its grand opening.

...

The first of these artifacts is an Asgardian War Hammer, with a description that says it was “originated in the dwarves forge on Nidavellir, this finely crafted object is made of the powerful stone, Uru.”

...

The second clue is a set of ancient texts and art, which are labeled “Mysterious Artifacts.” The description of these items, however, is less mysterious, and indicates that they are from the undersea kingdom of Atlantis.... The writing says that they “were found at the bottom of the Terran ocean. Very little is known of the civilization that created them.”

The article points to these having to do with Beta Ray Bill* and Namor. So, if they're in the ride, and the ride is directly tied to the MCU.... I also heard that there might be some news about a new Avenger being in the upcoming movie.

* Who with the what now?
