‘Doctor Strange’ Review: Strange Visuals, Familiar Story
http://collider.com/doctor-strange-review/

So you have a familiar hero fighting a familiar villain leading to a familiar conclusion, and director Scott Derrickson’s game-changer is nothing more than a change of scenery. On the one hand, he sends the movie through some trippy visuals, and then has one of the chase scenes play like Inception on steroids. They’re fun to watch, and at the very least these scenes suggest a visual boldness that was lacking in other Marvel movies (don’t even get me started on the dullness of the quantum realm in Ant-Man). While I don’t think every Marvel movie needs these kinds of trippy visuals, I hope we’ll see the studio take some chances in their other films.

However, these new visuals don’t offer up anything new to how Marvel is telling its stories. Marvel didn’t hire a director as much as they hired a decorator, and while it’s neat to see the movie play with some unique settings, it can turn into an absolute chore when it’s nothing more than two astrally projected spirits brawling in a hospital. I understand that there’s only so many different ways you can create unique fight scenes, and Doctor Strange has its fair share, but at the same time, nothing in the visuals solve the film’s pacing problems or that it’s drawing on the same tropes we’ve seen in previous MCU installments.

We can do it here...Just hold off on the spoilers until next weekend...if you need to post spoilers...PLEASE, spoiler alert in large type.

Enjoyed it more than I expected. Not normally a fan of magic, as the limits of possibility stretch only to fit the plot - and there is some of that here. But the difference between the MCU and the rather dreary Sony X-men and DC movies is that the Marvel flicks are so damn likable that you root for the movie and the "aw, c'mon" moments are nil. Your mileage may vary, of course.

It's a thin story, and should have been fleshed out more, but it was quite enjoyable. Tilda Swinton added some weight that was otherwise missing, so the casting issue was just non-existant.

Marvel Universe Opens Up a Portal of New Possibilities

Maybe we'll finally see Iron Man face off against the real Mandarin with the introduction of magic into the MCU.

Strange spoilers...

3/5 stars from me. I thought I was watching Doctor Iron Man. Rich guy. Wreckless. Has to study to learn magic. But the magic itself looked weak. Lame-o henchmen for a villain that appears in one scene. The final teaser came out of nowhere unless you were a reader.

Dr. Strange Spoilers......

I found the movie quite entertaining in total.

Seemed to try to be a little too cute with the timeline considering Strange was on the target hitlist of Hydra at the end of the Winter Soldier, they had him being requested to take on the case of Jim Rhodes after the events of Civil War which he turns down just before his car accident.

The magic seemed a bit underwhelming till the end showdown. Limiting to creating weapons, shields and transport portals. Even the use of the eye I wonder if it can truly be classified as magic since it is a cosmic tool as Wong blurts out that it is an Infinity Stone (like we really needed to be told that.)

The acting was very good all the way around. Tilda Swinton was believable as the ancient one and Benedict Cumberbatch played Dr. Strange well. Dr. Strange in the comics was pretty most always a bit of a self centered prick and fits in with Tony Stark and others from the Marvel Universe.

Look...I could go on about how many holes this has in it, compare it to swiss cheese, etc...but why. You all think I go out, spend good money, just to p*ss on the Marvel brand(which isn't true). I enjoyed this. But, once again...the anticipation was far more than the payoff. This movie is so thin that it almost seems like a contractual obligation just to introduce Strange into the Marvel Universe. It's hard to get mad about something so inconsequential. But, while I am at it...the car crash was ridiculous. NOBODY would have survived that cgi spectacle. More effort was exhausted to demonstrate Strange's Name That Tune abilities, while his 'photographic memory' was tossed in as a throwaway line. And the biggest most egregious fail...The Ancient One's reveal that she harnessed the power of the Dark ones...BUT WHYYYYYYYY? I know...to be Ancient, but WHYYYYYYYYY? Surely she had some moral reasoning...but in the interest of making a very very simple movie, they left all that moral ambiguity out. Nice to see Mads Mikkelsen finally in the MCU to demonstrate the Marvel eyecare line and run from scene to scene in a very rigid fashion. What a waste.
But there were good things. The introduction to the mysteries of the universe scene...Dormammu actually getting a sort of form, instead of the obligatory cloud...etc.
Butterscotch Cummerbund was good, except for the awkward accent occasionally. Whatshername was given NOTHING to do. The origin of Mordo was nice. But yeah, like Ant Man, a perfectly serviceable movie with just as many flaws as virtues. And one that suffers from the months and months of hype. I will have forgotten about it by the end of the week.
