Dragon*Con 2012 Exclusive: Jim Starlin Talks Thanos, Guardians Of The Galaxy, And More - Comic Book Therapy

If you had your choice, who would you want to voice Thanos and bring him to life?

I had thought about Idris Elba, who is an English actor I always thought about. He is already appearing as Heimdall. There were rumors going around that Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to be tapped for it, which at first I thought was a bad idea but then I caught him in the news since his post-cancer treatment and he has Thanos’ voice. He has this real gravelly voice and he would probably work well. Couldn’t think of anybody else I’d throw out off the top of my head.

I know you’ve talked about your relationship, or lack thereof, with Marvel when you see these characters and things you’ve helped bring to life is that kind of a mixed feeling as you’re watching?

I didn’t know Thanos was going to be in the movie until a couple weeks before and so there were some mixed feelings on that. Marvel and I are now talking. I can’t say anything more than that at this point about it. As far as the books go, I stopped reading Thanos when I stopped writing it, so I have no feelings about anything anyone’s done with it because I don’t know what they are.

Nice to see Marvel talking to the man again.

went to my storage last week to get this...

a figure I have been ebay watching for 3 months now. So I brought em both home...and I cant take em out of the package. I wanna, I'm gonna...but I gotta romance them a bit first.

I've come so close to buying that figure... but I've already got 3 other Thanos figures, albeit much smaller ones, so I've held off. So far.

I have a Darkseid figure. So does that count?

Seriously, Jim Starlin is a good man. :good:

Yes Folks, Thanos IS In Guardians Of The Galaxy And Avengers 2 | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

Armand Rock attended the recent Montreal Comic-Con and spoke with Jim Starlin who said that the deal is already in place. Jim Starlin even mentioned that Thanos will appear in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014 and The Avengers 2 in 2015.

The news is not that surprising, as most assumed Thanos would go on to become the Avengers major villain in The Avengers 2, but what it may reveal is that there might be another villain in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Greg Rucka On Leaving Marvel And DC Behind | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

My run on Punisher ends on #16, and we are then doing a five-issue mini called War Zone and then I’m done. That’s it! The Powers-That-Be at Marvel, without talking to me, decreed that he’s going to join a team on another book.

That’s their choice, they own him, but I don’t have to be happy about it. I am glad I had the opportunity to work on the character and I’m proud of the work I’ve done.

Dammit, THAT'S why his run is ending so soon?!? DAMMIT!

Kevin Feige Talks Thanos in THE AVENGERS and Plans for Phase Two | Collider

Speaking with MTV, Feige admitted that they were aware most of the Avengers moviegoers would be puzzled by the Thanos tease, but they loved the idea of sending audiences out of the theater talking about what they just saw:

?There?s a great track record now about lobbing something in at the last moment to get the audience buzzing. Particularly when it came to Thanos, [we knew] that most people in that audience had no idea who that purple guy was ? but they could clearly tell he was important, and knew if they asked the two or three people sitting next to them, somebody would know who he was.?

Though the tease made for one hell of a conversation starter, that tag wasn?t thrown into the film for nothing:

?Clearly, there?s a purpose to us putting him in the end of that movie. We do have plans for him. I wouldn?t say we ever feel the need to rush anything one way or the other. We succeeded in Phase One because we stuck to our guns and stuck to the plan. That plan took place over many, many years and it ultimately paid off. I see Phase Two unfolding in the same way of us taking our time, us doing what?s right for each individual movie, while folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three.?

In other words, don?t hold your breath for a Thanos sighting in Iron Man 3 or Thor: The Dark World. Though Whedon and Marvel cast actor/stuntman Damion Poitier to portray the baddie at the end of The Avengers, Feige admits that they?ll probably recast the role when he reappears:

?I think we feel pretty free to recast. That was cast for literally that one shot. Depending on what the role requires from future movies, we?ll go from there.?

As I mentioned in our earlier post regarding Thanos appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2, it will likely be quite some time before we hear any solid word regarding the character. That said, it?s clear from Feige?s comments that Marvel has some big plans for the villain in Phase Two. As a refresher, here?s what the Phase Two lineup looks like as of right now:

Iron Man 3 ? May 3rd, 2013
Thor: The Dark World ? November 8th, 2013
Captain America: The Winter Soldier ? April 4th, 2014
Guardians of the Galaxy ? August 1st, 2014
The Avengers 2 ? May 1st, 2015
