Richard Schiff Joins SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL

The new Superman movie Man of Steel has been shooting since August, so you know any casting news that surfaces tonight is for a small role. However, Variety?s report that Richard Schiff has joined the cast as ?Dr. Hamilton? may be noteworthy to fans of the comic. He is described as Superman?s ?scientific advisor,? building various machinery to aid our hero?s fight against crime. The character history suggests the role has the potential to grow larger, perhaps supported by the fact that director Zack Snyder secured Emmy winner and West Wing all star Schiff for what could amount to a bit part in the reboot.

Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, and Russell Crowe. Man of Steel opens June 14, 2013. Hit the jump for the Hamilton?s character bio.

Via the DC Comics Database:

A former employee of S.T.A.R. Labs and the US Government, it transpired he had been driven insane when all his research was bought up by Lex Luthor, who took credit for the inventions. He was placed in a mental health facility and responded well to treatment. On his release, he set up a laboratory in Suicide Slum and quickly became Superman?s ?scientific adviser?, eking out a general living as a technical consultant. He was responsible for creating many devices that aided Superman, including the Phantom Zone Projector and early Superman Robots, as well as helping Superman during such problems as the ?Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite?, when Red Kryptonite created by Mister Mxyzptlk shut down Superman?s powers; until Superman?s powers were restored, Hamilton provided him with various machinery such as a force field belt and an armored suit to allow him to continue as a hero.

In more recent comics, Hamilton has assumed a villain role, and I guess they could start there. I prefer the idea of Hamilton on the side of the good guys as Superman?s Q, though, at least in the first movie. The Playlist speculates the inclusion of Hamilton may support a rumor that Bradley Cooper has quietly joined the film as Lex Luthor, given Hamilton?s intricate relationship with Luthor in the comics. We?ll see.

This is the synopsis we have on hand for Man of Steel:

He has also theorized about how Superman?s Kryptonian biology works, and deduced the best way to defeat villains based on analysis of their powers. He lost an arm during the Fall of Metropolis, but replaced it with a self-designed cybernetic prosthesis.

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone?s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question ? Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as ?Superman,? not only to shine as the world?s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Interesting...well, a little at least.

Joe Carnahan Talks NEMESIS and KILLING PABLO; Says Liam Neeson Would Make Fantastic Blake Morrorw for NEMESIS

First up, Carnahan talked briefly about Nemesis. If you’re unfamiliar with the material, the comic asks the question “What if the smartest, toughest costumed bad ass in the world was totally evil?” The director revealed that he and Millar have actually discussed the possibility of Neeson playing the lead in the feature film adaptation:

“Mark Millar and I were talking about Nemesis and I had mentioned that I think a particularly fantastic Blake Morrow would be Liam Neeson.”

Furthermore, Carnahan said that he’s still very much involved with the project, saying, “I’ve never lost interest in Nemesis.” He went on to say that the project is in ongoing development.

Adgy...did you read this? Millar makes great material for adaptation to loud popcorn flicks. This sounds like another one.

When I stopped by Golden Apple for the latest BOYS monthly , I saw the tpb for this...Lobo Unbound, by Keith Giffen and this guy Alex Horley. WOW, where did he come from(ADGY...what should I seek out from him????). Funny, if DC was as mercenary as Marvel they would pimp the **** out of LOBO and make him their Deadpool or even Wolverine...but instead they seem to be intent on QUALITY, and this trade is that...in spades. Great artwork and storytelling. If you want to read a fun book, this will whet yer whistle...

hey Adgy, you say Lapham does a good Deadpool book...well, if him and Giffen ever hooked up onna Lobo vs Deadpool book I think the both of us would have to camp out for days just to read a rumor 'bout it...

I really only know that guy as a cover artist, but I think he did a JLA one shot, too. I forget what it was called. Here's a gallery of his stuff: http://comicartcommunity.com/gallery/categories.php?cat_id=151

I'll have to check out that Lobo book.

DC's New 52 Second Wave: Dial H, JSA & More | CraveOnline

DC has introduced what it's calling a "second wave" of their New 52 in the USA Today, announcing six new series starting up this May, which includes the long-awaited return of the Justice Society of America, as well as a new book giving us some Power Girl. They've also announced the cancellation of six other books to make room for the new wave.

Here's the rundown of the new books, straight from the Source:

BATMAN INCORPORATED ? Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of Action Comics, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on Batman Incorporated, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat. Morrison promises "a big emotional story." as he's working towards this series endpoint. "We've been setting up this big massive family drama to finish the whole thing with the kid caught in the middle."

EARTH 2 ? Writer: James Robinson. Artist: Nicola Scott. The greatest heroes on a parallel Earth, the Justice Society combats threats that will set them on a collision course with other worlds.

WORLDS? FINEST ? Writer: Paul Levitz. Artists: George Perez and Kevin Maguire. Stranded on our world from a parallel reality, Huntress and Power Girl struggle to find their way back to Earth 2. Perez and Maguire will be the artists on alternating story arcs.

DIAL H ? Writer: China Mi?ville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Mi?ville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero. "In the original run, he's turning into a giant spring coil to foil bank robbers, and I'm like, OK, what if you are a 25-year-old guy and you turn into a superpowered spring coil? That's going to mess with your head," Mi?ville says. "I cannot believe that I get to just make up superheroes. It's what you did as a kid. The whole point of Dial is that the roster of capes is changing every single month, often two or three times."

G.I. COMBAT ? Writer: J.T. Krul. Artist: Ariel Olivetti. Featuring the return of a classic DC Comics series, The War That Time Forgot, along with rotating back-up stories and creative teams ? including The Unknown Soldier, with writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian; and The Haunted Tank, with writer John Arcudi and artist Scott Kolins.

THE RAVAGERS ? Writer: Howard Mackie. Artist: Ian Churchill. Spinning off from Teen Titans and Superboy, this series finds four superpowered teens on the run and fighting against the organization that wants to turn them into supervillains.

Sounds pretty cool, right? Yes! The JSA is back! Also, Earth 2 Huntress and Power Girl doing a Legion Lost thing in World's Finest? How does this mix with the Huntress series and Karen Starr trucking around in Mr. Terrific? Well, maybe that won't matter, because Mr. Terrific is one of the six books getting the axe, along with Static Shock, Men of War, Blackhawks, O.M.A.C. and Hawk and Dove. Despite canceling two of their military-themed titles, DC still seems committed to the genre by rolling them towards G.I. Combat. Static Shock will be missed, though - but maybe not for that long, thankfully.

?Many of the characters from our canceled books will appear in DC Comics-The New 52 titles, and in some very surprising ways,? said Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras. ?We?re developing stories that reach from cultures around the globe to parallel worlds. We?re just getting started.?

So what sounds good to you in DCnU: The New Batch?

The CW and GREEN LANTERN Writers Bringing GREEN ARROW to Television

The CW already delved into DC Comics universe with their recently concluded Superman series Smallville, and writers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim brought Green Lantern to the big screen last summer. But now THR reports the network and writing duo are teaming up for Arrow, a small screen adaptation of Green Arrow which is currently in development. It’s not surprising considering the response to the hero’s appearance throughout a few seasons on Smallville was pretty strong, however, Justin Hartley, who played Green Arrow in the series, is not attached to this new project. Berlanti and Guggenheim will executive produce the series which serves as the second superhero property in development for Berlanti Productions along with Booster Gold at SyFy. There’s a gaping hole for a fanboy presence on The CW now so we’ll have to wait and see if the Green Arrow can fill it.

That sucking sound you hear...
