JUSTICE LEAGUE Lands Scribe Will Beall

Warner Bros. injects some much-needed life into their Justice League feature by tapping scribe, Will Beall (Gangster Squad). Clearly, after Disney and Marvel’s The Avengers put a superheroic dent into 2012′s box office, the studio behind the DC version would like to do the same. Beall has yet to turn in his draft, but the studio has shown strong faith in the screenwriter, having attached him to their reboot of Lethal Weapon and their remake of Logan’s Run. The latter will reunite Gangster Squad’s Ryan Gosling with his Drive director, Nicolas Winding Refn. Hit the jump for more on this exciting news for Justice League and to find out who is writing the Wonder Woman screenplay.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. is hush-hush on the production of Justice League and has yet to comment on the hire. A Justice League movie had been in the works until 2008 when the studio cited problems such as a lack of tax breaks and a dearth of writers (who were striking at the time) available to do a script rewrite. The previous attempt would have been directed by George Miller (Mad Max) from a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows). The film would have starred Adam Brody (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) as the Flash, Megan Gale (I Love You Too) as Wonder Woman and Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Batman.

Current attempts at restoring DC Comics to film glory include The Flash feature, scripted by Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green (both of Green Lantern) for director Greg Berlanti (Life As We Know It) and Wonder Woman, reportedly being written by a fourth Green Lantern scribe, Michael Goldenberg, since Berlanti was also a writer on Green Lantern. In other words, Warner Bros. is splitting four of its writers who were involved with one of their most underwhelming productions and giving them the reigns of two additional features in order to build up to a Justice League release. I’m pulling for the dark horse of Beall to somehow pull it all together.

And poor DC, always looking like the little brother.

Anybody else reading Scott Snyder's Batman right now? I just got caught up and hot damn that book is good.
I'm intrigued, but which book? I just searched scott snyder batman on amazon and both Batman: The Black Mirror and Batman: The Gates of Gotham came up. Which is better?

Actually, this one:

The "New 52" title. Though I thought Black Mirror was very good, as well. Haven't read Gates Of Gotham (but have a copy I plan to read soon). This Court Of Owls story, though... yeah. I was going to wait for the trades on this series, but after reading that first trade, I went and picked up every issue. I can't wait another 6-7 months to find out what happens next.

Even better is that they want to do a JLA movie with fresh actors for the roles. Real smart idea there. Fans usually don't like continuity in their movies about super heroes. It's usually better to cast unknowns rather than the people who made the roles popular.

I doubt WB will go for unknowns. Read some fancasting that had Idris Elba as a mo-capped Martian Manhunter, Charlie Hunnam(Sons of Anarchy) as Green Arrow and Rhona Mitra(Doomsday/Underworld) as Wonder Woman. Those were the three that stuck out as good choices. Oh yeah, they had Jon Hamm as Batman too. Not bad, but it's going to be hard to cast that many and keep the cost down. And the Justice League can't just be 4 or 5 members. They HAVE to include the big 3, Aquaman, MM, Green Arrow/Lantern...that's 7 already. It's a lot trickier. Also read another editorial where they made this point...

I’ve harped on this before, but I still find it weird that people try to equate the traditional comic book Marvel Vs. DC rivalry to the film universes, even though that **** doesn’t scale. Marvel began this cinematic endeavor as its own autonomous studio that depended wholly on its successes to continue, and will likely operate much the same way despite being acquired by the mouse house. DC has long been a total subsidiary of WB, and has never operated with the kind of single vision that the Marvel MCU put together.

It’s like mocking an oil field for not operating like a coal train- the business models have always been different. What this has provided us is with the best of both worlds- a beloved IP like Batman has been stacked — entirely on its own — amongst the Potters and Matrix flicks and Ocean’s movies as a property to be individually developed, while Marvel has orchestrated a grand plan where the individual pieces have served a whole. So for this reason we’ve gotten a lot of unique, singular takes on Batman (some good, some bad), while with Marvel we’ve seen a lot of decent, but compromised films lead to something epic and web-connecting. To put it more simply: consider that this year alone will have provided us with two entirely unprecedented experiences as a result of both approaches, neither of which could have happened as they did at the opposite studio. Your mileage may vary on which has provided you more raw hours of entertainment — and the scales would be more balanced if flicks like Green Lantern and Superman Returns were actually good — but there’s certainly a creative value to both.

Cool things could come of a bigger cinematic DC universe, but I personally feel it should either be done all the way, or not at all. My own personal aesthetic OCD demands consistency, and two men of steel running around is going to bug the **** out of me, and probably more than a few of you. I predict the next few years will be fascinating and frustrating for those paying attention to WB/DC’s efforts. Of course now begins the fun of wondering what kind of villain will draw these heroes together, how the origin of the team and new characters will work, and all those other fan-exciting questions…

That's a valid point that the Marvel movies are comprimised by being part of a bigger picture.

Mark Millar Says New ‘Justice League’ Script is

A pal of mine is good friends with the new Justice League screenwriter and said his take on the team is incredible. Very real-world and not at all what you might expect. WB has a chequered history with their superhero characters. They’re great with their boy wizards, but less consistent with their DC stable. But my chum said that this could be a thing of beauty and has been in the works for a little while now, not just an avengers knock-off. Best of luck to them. The tidbits I heard sound quite dark and mature, which isn’t what I expected. But word on Gangster Squad is great too so I feel this is in really good hands.

Has almost no credibility because Millar is known for talking about stuff he has no idea about. I hope the villains are the Anti-Justice League or whatever they call themselves. I need to see Mr Mxtxlplx(you know who I mean) and Captain Cold. With a Gorilla Grodd cameo.

But were they always? I could swear that an Avengers movie only started bubbling because of the success of Iron Man. Before that I don't recall much being said about it. . .to say nothing of the idea of a Thor or Captain America flick. I could be totally wrong though.

Yup...just go to the tag at the end of Iron Man 1 with the scene between Stark and Fury and mentions of an Avengers initiative. Yeah, even from the first they were gearing for a bigger picture.

How Many DC Movies Is Warner Bros. Developing Along With ‘Justice League?’ | /Film

According to Variety, Warner Bros. is currently developing Justice League, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Lobo, Suicide Squad and Shazam. We’d heard about almost all of these in the past, but have likely forgotten because the latest updates were years ago. Others, such as Justice League, Wonder Woman and Lobo, recently got new writers.

Suicide Squad??? Cool. That's the good news.

One major component in several of those films is Christopher Nolan, directing one and producing another, and the article seems to suggest that after The Dark Knight Rises is out, Warner’s will see just how involved he wants to be with the whole thing. Could he be their Kevin Feige? I thought that was Geoff Johns’ responsibility?

and here's the bad. Let Nolan walk away. Please. If he brings his grim reality to the entire DC universe it will be the end of my interest. The man has one tone and if you are going to usher in a whole slate you have to be able to have fun as well as be dark and gritty. Nolan just seems like one of those satires where they show some Danish game show or Birthday Party or something and it's all shot in grey monochrome with no smiles and heavy music accompanying...

Wait, that's not the Iron Patriot in Iron Man 3 after all! | Blastr

Remember those sensational leaked photos that came out of the Iron Man 3 set last week, showing what appeared to be the Iron Patriot armor? Well, let's all take a deep breath ... seems that it's not the Iron Patriot after all. So who is it supposed to be?

According to Latino Review, the armor in question is actually that of War Machine, aka Tony Stark's best friend James Rhodes (Don Cheadle). Apparently, since the U.S. military has had possession of this suit for some time now (thanks to Rhodey bringing it in in Iron Man 2), they've decided to give the armor a patriotic new coat of paint just for that extra shot of national pride.

But wait a minute, you cry, what about the other photo that showed a guy who wasn't Don Cheadle wearing the suit? Wasn't that actor James Badge Dale, who's supposed to be playing some variation on Coldblood?

Wrong, says Latino Review's source. That guy snapped in the suit is just a stunt man. Since he happened to be white, and not black, the news quickly spread that it must be James Badge Dale in the suit.

Of course, none of this is officially confirmed. We're lucky that Marvel has actually confirmed that it started shooting Iron Man 3. But to repeat, someone on the set has said that this star-spangled gear is not Iron Patriot at all, just good old War Machine.
