Sony Columbia’s head honcho, Douglas Belgrad, has given an interview to The Hollywood Reporter that touches quickly on this issue. He admits where the problems were:

The section where Rhys Ifans’ character turns irrevocably into the Lizard. It took several months to figure out, and the filmmakers cut a bunch of scenes. In software parlance, it required a patch.

these 'obstacles' being that they did not like the Lizard effects or Webb's cut and they forced him to make major changes that apparently affected continuity close to d-day...allegedly.

It was a story in my head I called Sandman 0, and it was what happened just before Sandman 1 started. It was a whole storyline you never knew about. It happens in 1914, 1915.

I talked with DC Comics about doing it 7 years ago for the 20th anniversary of Sandman. And we batted it about a bit. But their business department at that point wasn’t prepared to talk to me about doing Sandman on essentially any other terms than the ones when I signed my contract in 1987.

And the moment new people were running DC Comics, the first thing they did was come back to me and say ‘Ok, Sandman’s 25th anniversary, could we do that thing we were talking about for the 20th?’

And I said sure.

I don't think a character whose main ability is running fast really lends itself to live action these days...

It's gonna be tricky. There can be no emo-Flash. The strength of the character is the 'rogue's gallery'. But they are all VERY comic-booky. Flash is going to HAVE to be a lighthearted adventure/action flick while stopping just short of Adam West Batman territory. The tone they tried with Green Lantern would have been far more appropriate for the Flash. Oh, and he can vibrate through solid objects too Doc...not that that alters your argument in any way.

He can do lots of stuff with his super speed... but ultimately they're going to have a protagonist who can't really interact with the rest of his world while being a hero because he's too busy being a blur.

Maybe I'm wrong... I just don't see how it can be done well.

you aren't wrong...it's a horribly difficult hero to pull off, but DC NEEDS it to work if they are going to go all Marvel and JLA the place up. I don't envy them. But, you know...it seemed like Thor was highly unlikely too and they made that work in spades so who knows?

Doc...bear with me for a minute,

If WB wants to make something special give the Flash to Steven Chow. Kung Fu Hustle had exactly the right mix of humor and drama and just watch this



I really think he could make it work.
 
I loved Kung Fu Hustle (audible gasp) and I love that "thinking outside the box" attitude you're going with... there are just somethings I can't see the light on. My inner Nay is just too strong on this one.
