Review: Dredd 3D | Shock Till You Drop

Dredd 3D is as grim and gritty and violent as other action movies we've seen, but when it breaks away from normal action movie conventions is when it gets interesting as the filmmakers find a stylish way of showing violence. It may not be the fastest-moving action movie you'll see, but it remains true to the comics thanks to Karl Urban's spot-on portrayal of Dredd.

just sayin...

Hey, JD, ever read any of Garland's novels?

And Adgy, lol, I am so out of the loop, I didn't know Rucka was writing Punisher. Funny, I was re-reading one of my Whiteout tpbs the other day. Really good, but not as good as Queen & Country. Tara Chace is one of my favorite characters, like ever.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. :P

He's only written like 3 novels. ;)

The Beach is a place to start. They made that into a film with Leonardo DiCrapio, lol, which wasn't that bad, but the novel is a WHOLE lot better. And it's really creepy if you're into that sort of thing. ;)

His Punisher is really good, Orph. You should check it out. Vol. 2 just came out in tpb.

Also, if you ain't read Stumptown yet, the first issue of the second volume just came out. Get on that ****, too.

Just read Kick-Ass 2.

Ooof. What the hell. I'm getting old because that was just too ****ing violent and mean and just.... blurf.

I don't think I could handle that turned into a movie.

Now I have to read it. Apparently it has been toned down considerably.

Advance Review: Happy #1 | The Beat

Overall, Happy is a gross, funny, entertaining comic, which veers away from typical Morrison styling. The book doesn’t offer an intricate web of narratives, which all bounce meaning off each other. It instead offers a fun, silly take on the crime genre, with lovely art from Robertson and sterling work from Clark and letterer Simon Bowland. This is a professional piece of work, done by a load of professionals. In other words — it’s very very good.

Movie Review: Dredd 3D | Geeks of Doom

Travis’ Dredd 3D is a violent, no-holds-barred, post-apocalyptic masterpiece. It amazes me that, in an age of PG-13 horror movies and watered-down, derivative crap, a hard-R sci-fi action movie can be released in theaters with tons of blood and head-exploding awesomeness. Dredd 3D is everything the RoboCop remake should be, but won’t be – a brutal, pulpy tech-noir dressed in the trappings of a bleak, dystopian future.

As I write this review, Dredd 3D will have only made $6,300,000 this weekend – and that’s ****ing sad. It’s sad that people are more willing to watch the absolutely abysmal House at the end of the Street ($13 Million opening weekend gross) or the SIXTH Resident Evil movie, Resident Evil: Retribution ($6,700,000 this weekend) than an inspired, faithful comic book adaptation with balls – a grindhouse satire that isn’t afraid to skin a few thugs alive.

If you long for the days when science-fiction action flicks were rated R and sold to actual adults instead of PG-13, bloodless, generic novelties for kids with learner’s permits, then Dredd 3D is a fantastically fun shoot ‘em up with great performances by Urban, Thirlby, Headey, and Avon Barksdale himself, Wood Harris.

Look, if you’re a geek (and I assume you are), you need to saddle up and go to the theater and see Dredd 3D. It’s Blade Runner meets Die Hard, and I desperately want a sequel with robots, aliens, mutants and bad-ass Karl Urban growling and field-dressing himself with a Predator-esque first aid kit. I AM THE LAW!

slowcrisis asked: I'm sure you hear this all the time, but I miss Katchoo and the gang. I heard tale that you might be working on another installment of Strangers in Paradise, is this true?

It’s true. I’m writing a SiP novel that takes place after the series end. Planning a summer 2013 release.

Sweet!

I really hope more people get out to see this film. I'd leave Blade Runner out of the comparison, but I like the Die Hard reference. Maybe in those terms, I'd go with Die Hard meets Robocop meets The Warriors with an impeccable visual style. Certainly, this film is not as broadly acceptable as The Avengers, but, that aside, I think I liked it more than The Avengers. Also might be because I've seen it more recently, though. I'll have to check out The Avengers again on Blu in a hurry, I guess.

On a side note, I received a free copy of The Avengers from Amazon, because I pre-ordered the Marvel box set, which was subsequently delayed. I thought that was a nice gesture by Amazon.
