Pre-release tracking predicted that Universal?s superhero action-comedy Kick Ass 2 (playing in 2,940 theaters) would be the #1 film this weekend as it made steady gains in key areas with solid interest indicated from younger audiences and males in particular. Instead, it bombed with only $13.6M after looking to open #1 , then #2, then #3 on Friday - trailing the Warner Bros/New Line holdover comedy We?re The Millers. Not even its ?B+? CinemaScore could help word of mouth after critics savaged it with only 29% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes because it fell short of the original. Fanboys decided to stay away. I predict debate will rage about whether this sequel based on Mark Millar/John S. Romita?s comic book was necessary. Even the 2010 original?s $19.8M opening was considered dismal, only to make up for it as a hot DVD sale and rental and digital download because of its R-rated irreverence and style. Wrongly, the studio believed ?there was a committed fan base that could be activated as a core audience for a sequel,? as a Universal exec emailed me. So the studio handled worldwide distribution for the further adventures of Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chlo? Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse respectively). Vigilante crusader Colonel Stars and Stripes is played by Jim Carrey who kicked up a fuss by proclaiming he wouldn?t promote the film because of its ultra-violence. A few weeks later, he got onboard ? but not before generating a ton of bad publicity for the pic. (He didn?t make himself very popular in Hollywood with this stunt. Let?s see if his career continues to crater.) From a screenplay by director Jeff Wadlow, pic also reteamed producers Matthew Vaughn, Adam Bohling, Tarquin Pack and David Reid. It was independently financed for only $28M, then acquired by Universal before production began in September of 2012. Film opens day-and-date in 18 international territories including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany and grossed $6.3M at 1,500 dates

The only Ennis work I have read that I just did not enjoy. Maybe it's because Punisher is just so one dimensional that even Ennis can't really do anything 'special' with it.
Those might be fighting words. Haha.![]()
Comics and graphic novel publisher Boom! Studios and Universal opened their Denzel Washington-Mark Wahlberg actioner 2 Guns at #1 earlier this month. Now the companies have inked a deal for their next comic book adaptation. Uni snatched up film rights to the new Boom! comic Day Men just about a month after it hit shelves, in what I hear was a pre-emptive seven-figure bid. Day Men follows a secret order of humans charged with protecting vampires as they sleep during the day; when a war breaks out between two rival vampire families, one of the Day Men must intervene.
Boom!’s CEO Ross Richie and Stephen Christy are attached as producers on what could turn into a new action-horror franchise for Universal a la rival genre franchises Blade or Resident Evil. Universal Executive Vice President Scott Bernstein will be overseeing for the studio. A source tells me Uni had been eyeing Day Men since it debuted at Boom!’s Comic-Con panel and subsequently hit shelves July 17.
In an interview with I Am Rogue, Caruso had this to say...
"I’m still attached to Preacher and we’re wrestling with Sony because I got another movie at Sony called Invertigo, which is a big action film we’re trying to get going this summer. So Preacher got put on the back burner, but we’re still involved with Preacher and hopefully we’ll have some good news on that soon. Todd August wrote a great script. I think it’s one of those features that has to kind of go through the studio system if it’s going to be made for a certain price. So we’re kind of revisiting a way to approach making the movie in the right way."
Back in 2011 we told you that Caruso has been in touch with Star Trek star Chris Pine for the lead role of "Jesse Custer" and, of all people, Shia LaBeouf to play the Nirvana-obsessed fan who tried going out like Kurt but missed and ended up having ... well ... an Arseface.
Zero percent chance, sorry! I know a lot of you have seen the shaky camera footage, but it was made after 12 days of shooting and isn’t a true reflection of the awesomeness we’re trying to create for you.
