A New Strangers In Paradise Comic By Terry Moore - If They Were Six Years Old - Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

STK646612-600x910.jpg

They’re back! The Strangers of Paradise gang returns in their first all-new, full-color story since 2007 – as 6 year olds! Francine and Katchoo comb the neighborhood for a missing peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but Darcy bribes Tambi to find it first and every suspect reeks of PB&J. Meanwhile, the mysterious “Kissing Bandit” seems unusually fixated on Francine, and Casey launches an all-out attack on David’s “No Girls” treehouse.

I really hope this is happening.

There will be a lot more to come on that Edgar Wright story. He has cradle to graved the damn thing up to and including co-writing the script...it's been cast and the release date pencilled in so I ain't buying the creative differences horse****, what? they just took a look at what he was doing???? Something happened. Marvel will try to squash it but there has to be a very interesting story behind the scenes. Hell Feige even said at one point that the way that Wright was developing the story influenced Marvel in their other projects as well. So some puppet is going to come in and basically direct a movie that is already lined up? Cause there is no time to rework it if they are gonna stick to the 'Marvel plan'. This sucks.

here...

Edgar Wright Exits ANT-MAN over Creative Differences

This is a surprising and unfortunate turn of events as Wright wasn’t just the director on Ant-Man, but a co-writer on the script with Joe Cornish. Furthermore, his take on the story didn’t just set up the hero’s origin, but his initial ideas for the film a number of years ago helped to form Marvel’s approach to their cinematic universe, or so said Kevin Feige himself. Wright’s been working on this project off and on for years now, with our earliest mention of his attachment to the film going back almost five years. In fact, Wright’s involvement goes back to 2006, before Iron Man, before the Marvel we know today even existed.
I mention this because today’s news that the director and studio have suddenly parted ways over differences in vision makes very little sense. If Wright has been tweaking the script for years, and if his ideas for the hero helped to shape the way that Marvel approached its highly lucrative cinematic universe-building right down to the team members that would go on to form The Avengers, then how did it all go wrong at the last second? The cast was in place, his test footage has been circulating for some time now … it’s not as if Marvel didn’t know what they were getting with Wright. It’s all very confusing and disheartening for Wright fans, myself included. And while the cast and release date remains intact, it seems that Wright’s vision for the film is a casualty.

Nice of Marvel b.t.w to try to bury this on the long holiday weekend. Shouldn't be too long before Wright is announced for one of the Star Wars spinoffs.

Rumor: Why Edgar Wright Left ANT-MAN

So what were these “creative differences”? A rumor surfaced on reddit claiming that production was running behind schedule, but that doesn’t make sense given that filming isn’t even set to begin until July. The folks over at Latino Review, however, have a much more plausible explanation for the exit, as they claim that the script for Ant-Man—which Wright has been fine-tuning with co-writer Joe Cornish for many, many years now—went through a significant rewrite by Marvel that the filmmaker was uncomfortable filming:
About 3 months ago, Marvel had notes. The meat of the notes were about the core morality of the piece, must include franchise characters. etc., These notes came from the big four at Marvel. Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright did two drafts to try and answer the notes without compromising their vision.
6 weeks ago Marvel took the script off them and gave the writing assignment to two very low credit writers. One of the writers was from Marvel’s in house writing team. Edgar stayed cool, agreed to stay on the project, and read the draft.
The script came in this week and was completely undone. Poorer, homogenized, and not Edgar’s vision. Edgar met with Marvel on Friday to formally exit and the announcement went out directly after.

James Gunn Responds to Edgar Wright's Exit from Marvel's ANT-MAN

Sometimes you have friends in a relationship. You love each of them dearly as individuals and think they’re amazing people. When they talk to you about their troubles, you do everything you can to support them, to keep them together, because if you love them both so much doesn’t it make sense they should love each other? But little by little you realize, at heart, they aren’t meant to be together – not because there’s anything wrong with either of them, but they just don’t have personalities that mesh in a comfortable way. They don’t make each other happy. Although it’s sad to see them split, when they do, you’re surprisingly relieved, and excited to see where their lives take them next.
It’s easy to try to make one party “right” and another party “wrong” when a breakup happens, but it often isn’t that simple. Or perhaps it’s even more simple than that – not everyone belongs in a relationship together. It doesn’t mean they’re not wonderful people.
And that’s true of both Edgar Wright and Marvel. One of them isn’t a person, but I think you get what I mean.

Saw X-Men on Saturday night. I thought it was very very well done. It DOES have a couple of little kill your grandfather type things in it, but it's basically impossible to avoid in this thing.

It's really a Wolverine and Mystique movie truth be told...and if you're ok with that, you're going to enjoy it. A lot of fun I thought.

Sorry SmytheKing but here is a comprehensive list of why this flick is a fail...

OBVIOUSLY MAJOR SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

but a spoiler warning isn't worth a tinker's cuss because this movie is sooooo predictable that even wholesale death has no impact due to Singer's inabilty to generate anything resembling an ounce of drama. The outcome is never in doubt in this one and that makes it's 12 hour(that's what it felt like really) runtime almost unbearable. I have soooooooo many complaints. Here are a few. Jennifer Lawrence is wasted here. You would think that Singer has noooooooo idea how to direct a woman. And read into that what you want, but honestly, she is a total blank. The fact she got paid should be insulting to actors. Fassbender's Magneto has a moment of significance, which goes all sideways when he becomes the villain of the movie. Poor motivation and really dodgy choices undo all the good work that Vaughn did with First Class. Oh, and did you like any of the characters Vaughn fleshed out? Well tough ****...they are all dead. Instead we get BooBoo and BingBing playing the Triple A Alberquerque mutants. Nothing other than poor costume design to define them. Man, how are Collossus and Iceman(despite Shawn Ashmore's efforts) just so BORING. Oh, and for a LONG Xmen movie there are really just 3 action sequences. ALLLLLLLL marred by T2 era liquid Terminator really bad cgi. OOOOh Metal and flame or (same template with a color change) ice. Mystyque's physical make-up is no less disturbing. For a huge budget flick this movie looks cheap. Just because they go back to the 70's didn't mean they had to roll back the effects dial as well. The one surprisingly good thing about the movie, (Quicksilver...yes, believe it or not, despite the terrible design, he's good) is gone from the movie before you even have a chance to appreciate him. Just bad decision after bad decision. Whereas First Class was a thoughtful movie with deep motives that made great arguments pro and con, this is a really DUMB movie where people are either GOOD...or BAAAAAAAD! And it's got a TON of flashbacks in it where old footage is recycled including the most terribly unecessary reboot/cram in of Stryker. Yeah, Singer has reclaimed the X-franchise...and it sucks out loud again.

Oh, and unless you know the spoiler for the post credits scene don't bother. It has to be explained which really just builds more non excitement.

Ok, so....like, which comic book movie has there been a case where the outcome was in doubt? I mean, isn't that sort of the point of all of these? To see them conquer over bad and have us cheer at the end for their awesome victory? This just doesn't seem to be the place to complain about this critique. It's basically a cut and paste one for the last seven years of these flicks. The bad guys lose. Spoiler alert.

Granted, I don't know much about her backstory or anything, but isn't she just basically an assassin? I thought the sequence where she takes out the whole boardroom during the Paris Peace Accords was pretty badass myself. It was a lot better than anything she had to do in the first one of these quite frankly and I thought her taking out that baddie with her foot was awesome too. Now, if we're talking about sheer emotion and whatever and chewing scenery...then sure. I get that. I just don't know when that was going to happen really in this one. The only person who gets the chance to really work their chops in this movie is McAvoy and I thought he did really well too.
Fassbender's Magneto has a moment of significance, which goes all sideways when he becomes the villain of the movie. Poor motivation and really dodgy choices undo all the good work that Vaughn did with First Class.
His motivation has been what it's always been though (even in First Class). He doesn't trust humans. Nothing is different in this one. He'll sacrifice his good friend if he has to and he'll sacrifice his Mystique as well. Whatever it takes to save Mutants is what he'll do and that's been kinda consistent for all the movies no?
Oh, and did you like any of the characters Vaughn fleshed out? Well tough ****...they are all dead. Instead we get BooBoo and BingBing playing the Triple A Alberquerque mutants. Nothing other than poor costume design to define them. Man, how are Collossus and Iceman(despite Shawn Ashmore's efforts) just so BORING.
This seems like a fair critique to me, but are any of the ones from First Class in that story from the original comic? I honestly don't know. Given how fans freak about stuff like the actor playing Batman or Spidermans web shooters...imagine if you just randomly flip characters from one of the most popular storylines in the franchises history. I don't even know who those new mutants are, but I'm pretty certain people know are X-Men fans do. I think one was named Blink? Was that one dude Bishop? I think they said his name but I don't know.

Oh, and for a LONG Xmen movie there are really just 3 action sequences. ALLLLLLLL marred by T2 era liquid Terminator really bad cgi. OOOOh Metal and flame or (same template with a color change) ice. They put her in more of a body suit because it saved about 8 hours in makeup or something ridiculous. I mean, it looks more like that...but maybe because I was looking? Not ONLY because it was Jennifer Lawrence in a body suit...

As far as the other effects, which ones did you think looked cheap? The Sentinels were built to counter a mutants powers and so...ice is going to get fire and vice versa. The other fight with them has them stabbing Storm and lighting "Bishop" on fire (and I don't know what his power is so...). Then, in the 70's Magneto is controlling them and they only have those guns. You thought that stadium being dropped around the White House was cheap looking? That was legit!
The one surprisingly good thing about the movie, (Quicksilver...yes, believe it or not, despite the terrible design, he's good) is gone from the movie before you even have a chance to appreciate him.
Yes. This I agree with. I have no idea why they did this and I was fully expecting him to come back into several sequences towards the end to save the day. When it didn't happen, I kept going, "huh" to myself because it would have made sense.
Just bad decision after bad decision. Whereas First Class was a thoughtful movie with deep motives that made great arguments pro and con, this is a really DUMB movie where people are either GOOD...or BAAAAAAAD! I'm just gonna say it...

This sounds an awful lot like your feelings on Batman. You're letting your distaste of a director cloud the movie itself. I know you don't like Singer, but you've been dogging this movie for sometime and it feels like you set it up so you went in looking to not like it rather than giving it a chance. :)

Oh, and unless you know the spoiler for the post credits scene don't bother. It has to be explained which really just builds more non excitement.
Kind of like what I had to do at the end of Captain to you because I had nooooooooooooooo idea who they were? :P

These post-credit things are there to drum up interest and make people who DO know what is up get a boner and those who DON'T know what's up look it up to find out.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

SmytheKing, I find it a littlle dismissive that you suggest my entire criticism is invalid simply because I don't think Singer has made a good film since Usual Suspects. I paid my ticket price on opening weekend like everyone else, so I think that at least suggests that I wanted to be entertained. Even I am not that cynical. Maybe I am a harsher critic due to those opinions, but I COULD have been swayed by a great movie, hell even a good one, which this wasn't. I don't like the X-Men franchise in it's entirety, but I thought Vaughn's First Class was terrific(although waaaaaaayyy toooo lonnnng).

As far as Singer not generating any dramatic tension I stand by that. Yes, we all pretty much know how these movies are going to turn out. The hero will win, the villain will get his comeuppance etc etc...but in the better superhero movies you still get a sense of the grandeur of these events. This movie had characters die, and yet there was no 'wow' to any of it. It was just plot beats aped from the far better source material. And yes, most of this I lay at Singers feet although Kinberg(the writer) shares the blame. You mention Bishop's power, and how you don't know what it is from the comics...well you shouldn't have to. Singer shows one of his characters apparently ONLY being able to function when he absorbs blasts from his teammates, yet the Sentinel's power kills him. WITH NO EXPLANATION. Why???? Kitty sustains a killing blow from Wolverine, yet it is addressed once, ignored, then never addressed again. WHY???? Because none of these characters matter. They are cannon fodder. And that is why you simply don't care. If the director doesn't, why should you. And when the Sentinels FINALLY arrive in the future the only thing it signalled was a sense of relief that the movie was going to end.

From the very beginning it's one bit of expository dialogue after another. That type of storytelling is a terrible crutch and Singer relies on it far too heavily. Once again, my argument that Singer is not a storyteller. And character motivations...Magneto is supposedly such a critical part of their plan, and after a rushed/far-too-easy jailbreak he stops being a character and starts to become a plot generator. In Vaugn's FC, he was a well spoken, well thought out actual multidimensional PERSON. In this he makes poor DUMB decisions that actually negatively effect what he is trying to accomplish. And, his importance to the cause...well, apparently future Dr X./Magneto have no ****ing clue what they are talking about. And when Wolverine has the great foresight(where the hell did that come from) to allow past-x to meet with future-x(how is that possible and who would know that it was???), once again, solving storytelling issues through poor writing.
As far as the poor effects, the whole metal cgi(a la Colossus) has advanced beyond the T2 version where faces had to be blank with no sharp features. Same for the fire/ice effects. The sentinels were nothing I couldn't see in a SyFy movie either. Just cheap looking. Also, the stadium relocation was puzzling. Just a big set piece for set pieces sake. And Mystique's look, sorry...but there had to be a better option than what they went with, Besides the bodysuit, her wig was from the Burt Reynolds collection. People have parts, not seams for hairlines. Unforgivable in a movie of this magnitude.

Oh, and the post credits thing...ok, yes, these normally need an explanation...but at least they are visually intriguing enough to make people want one. When Thanos was revealed at the end of Avengers, there was curiosity. Showing Apocalypse as a child was akin to seeing the rise of Darth Vader from 8 years old. And we all know how fun that was. The stingers HAVE to generate excitement and this was sooooo limp.

Either way, this will be the topic of many 4am conversations in line for Hall H this year.
