The Pacific Division Thread

They aren't as talented as the Avs or as tough as Vegas, Stars...or Kings for that matter.

It does give them a fighting chance, sure, but it's a very risky move. They must really trust Wallstedt, but trusting a young goalie with this season being his first good one and no playoff experience is foolish. Though it's true that Gustavsson is a very good backup.
All of those teams have been beaten by the Oilers. The goal is to build a team that can beat the Oilers. The Wild with Hughes have a much better chance at beating them in a series. Even if Hughes is considered a rental he gives them 2 chances at that.

Thinking about a Hughes/Faber pairing. That is gonna compete with Toews/Makar for best in the West. Awesome move by the Wild.
Huge assets going back but that’s the number two defenseman in the league who just made that team so much more competitive both offensively and defensively. Will take off pressure from Faber having to do it all. An exciting and A+ hockey trade.

The Avs swept the Oilers in '22 and their current roster can actually stand up to this season's Oilers, so there's an exception to that. And if I remember correctly, the Stars beat the Avs in the past two seasons' playoffs while the Kraken beat them three seasons ago.

Avs certainly have a good shot at dethroning the WC champs this season but regular season dominance rarely transfers to the postseason.

In the 37 seasons of the President’s Trophy award, the winner has gone on to win 8 Stanley Cups. They’ve also been bounced in the 1st round 8 times.

Yes it was symbology,Sharks score 4 goals in the 3rd period and win the game vas the Pens in OT 6-5.Don’t look now,but the Oilers and Sharks are at the Kings doorstep and if the playoffs started tonight 5 teams from the Pacific(Vegas,Ducks,Kings,Oilers and the Sharks) would be in the SC playoffs

Edmonton has now leapfrogged the Kings in the Pacific Division. NHL homepage is frothing and giddy about Draihumpl's 1,000 points.

San Jose? Oh nothing, just tied with the Kings now in points. Where does that leave the Kings? I guess there's always the hope of holding onto a wildcard spot - but if you can't score goals (PP was one thing - now even five-on-five) I cannot say I am very hopeful.

and if we expand the view to the western conference the Kings are fighting for the 8th spot with a dangerous Winnipeg team below them.

Will the Kings miss the playoffs this season?

Yes, the Kings will miss the playoffs. They will miss playing the Oilers again, however, if somehow, they sneak in, they can play the Avs. If that happens and if I was Colorado, I would sit most of the starters, so they didn't have to play an extra 4 playoff games.

Would be a waste of eight days for both teams.

And just like that, San Jose has passed LA in the standings, with Nashville one point behind for final wild card. Bottom dwellers no more
