Booze The recommend-a-beer thread

Thats kinda wierd, because its a malt liquor. Since it violates the Reinheitsgebot, it can't be a Bock beer.

I think you're a little confused here and apologies if I'm jumping in inappropriately....It should be noted that "malt liquor" is just a naming convention forced upon brewers by the ABA or some other regulatory body. It has no basis in anything other than to force brewers to flag a high gravity brew (I think those at 5%+ ABV but I'm not sure). So to say that Spaten Optimator violates the Reinheitsgebot b/c it's labeled in North America as a "malt liquor" is incorrect. The Reinheitsgebot simply notes that beer be made only from water, barley, and hops (it was written in the days before Pasteur so they didn't know about yeast....). I'm pretty damn sure that Spaten Optimator, which is actually a Doppelbock, falls fully within the confines of the Reinheitsbebot. OK, I'm done being anal for the day! Time for a beer isn't it?

Not to get too snippy, but I think you need to read the label.

You are correct about the Reinheitsgebot and the usage of yeast (yes, orinally beer was spontaneously fermented by wild yeast or by the transfer of yeast from one batch of beer to the next), but the beer clearly states that it’s a "Malt Liquor". If the beer was a true dopplebock it would be labeled as such by the company that makes it. As far as I know it is only illegal in Germany to call a something a beer if it’s classified as something else. Hence it is labeled a "Malt Liquor" by the company that makes it. I'm not exactly sure about the laws in America and labeling of what is "beer", but I believe that the Reinheitsgebot only holds true in Germany. Where it is a law.

We may be arguing semantics over this, so why don't we drop the conversation after this. Reply if you like, I won't.

Daxx, I second Lone Hill. It's a bit of a drive for me, but their selection is great. I hit up Liquorama a bit more than Az, just because I seem to be heading that way more often. The only problem with Lone Hill, is that you better be prepared to spend some money, because as a beer lover, it is hard to walk out the door without buying twice the beer you planned on picking up.

it's kinda like that at Vendome's in TOluca Lake. two aisles full of 22 oz bottles.

had some of this the other day for the first time... not bad... not bad at all

It's not a big deal other than to educate, but the "malt liquor" that is stamped on the label is something that Spaten is forced to do by US law. Spaten Optimator IS a doppelbock whether it's on the label or not and it's only a "malt liquor" in the eyes of US law b/c of it's high ABV%.

Here are some links that might clarify better than I can.

OK, I bought some Red Hook Longhammer IPA and the **** is pretty good! Can't complain for $6.99 a sixer at Ralph's. 8++

good stuff, maynard!

I stopped frequenting a local restaurant when they stopped serving Longhammer. every time I go back after weeks of absence, they'll ask "where have you been?!"

I'll shrug, then say "no IPA, no show."

More appropriate for a "Do-Not-Recommend-A-Beer-Thread" I had a pint of Guinness 250th on tap Friday night. Booo. Tasted like watered down Guinness. Disappointing.

Went looking for some pumpkin beer today but didn't find any. I did find a sixer of Black Butte which I've never tried before. Looking forward to getting the chance to try it.

like Stone 9-09. Reminds me of Delirium's Nokturnum.

Bought a 6er of Bridgeport IPA. Was at Club BevMo price for $7.29.

One of the best porters out there! If you like it, I highly recommend the XXI Black Butte. It's an Imperial Porter that is just outstanding.

Snagged a couple of The Bruery's "Autumn Maple Barrel Aged" beers. WOW, WOW, WOW!!! Easily in my top 20, and an A+ all the way around. I will be going back this Friday to pick up some more. I cannot recommend this beer enough! It was actually some of last year's batch that they saved, but I believe they force carbonated the BA partition to fix the obvious issue from last year's under carbonated batch. So you've got a delicious autumn maple aged in barrels WITH an adequate and much improved level of carbonation. One of the best beers I have had in a long time. I sampled the Snicklefritz while I was down there as well. Not too shabby. However, their White Oak is downright fantastic. It's a barrel aged Belgian Pale, and I have never tasted so much wood in my mouth before (ok I set myself up for that one). It's literally as if you were drinking out of an oak cup, or something to that effect. 12% ABV and $25 to fill a growler, but it is sooo worth it :) I will be going in with a couple buddies on a growler of that this Friday. Unfortunately, The Bruery is getting pretty big and the employees had that "I work for Stone and I'm going to be a dick to you" attitude. I understand they have to be careful, but you can still let the visitors feel welcome at the very least. It won't keep me from going, I'll just be in and out, taking care of business :)

Stone's 9-9-9 was a big disappointment. Not really sure what they were going for. It came off as a very thin bodied boozy porter that had no real identity. I could pick up the tangerine peel that they used, but it didn't help the brew overall. I'll get another one and sit on it, but I don't see this one aging at all to be honest. Glad you liked it though Mitch..... maybe I got a bad bottle. Who knows!

Maui's Coconut Porter is amazing! I tried Angel City's Ale at the fair last night which was nice, and the Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale was surprisingly good. Over the weekend I also had a sip of the Marin Rasberry Trail and it was pretty bland, just like the rest of their beers. Pass on it.

as mentioned in the other thread, these Vertical Epics are meant to be aged.

have you had Kona's Pipeline Porter? I like them better than the Fire Rock, which is a bit thin IMHO. or maybe I was thinking of their Longboard Island Lager. come to think of it, I haven't had the Fire Rock in a while, which is probably why.

how about this beer?

I am hoping to pick some up soon, along with the 09s
