Groceries The semi-irregular "Cool stuff at Trader Joe's" thread

I respectfully disagree on Sprouts having the best produce. They are really inconsistent from store to store. I was at the new Culver City location last week and all the produce looked miserable and like it was about to spoil. The watermelons were all soft. It can be also be expensive if you don't purchase produce on sale.

I've never seen any prepared meals from Sprouts that are similar to what they have in TJs, unless I'm looking in the wrong place. One thing they DO have is a great bulk items section, but that isn't prepared meals.

Can't disagree on the meat section though.
concur in the produce.

We go to another place for ours. Sprouts is hit or miss.

Sprouts does have prepared meals. They are neat the deli by the cheeses, at least at my Sprouts.

i'm still mad that TJ's doesn't carry that ginger yogurt in those little glass jars anymore... THAT was my favorite thing to get there.

and the Ruby Red Grapefriut Juice Squeeze!

Are you sure you're not mistaking some other place for Sprouts? Their produces is CHEAP as hell! I will easily spend half at Sprouts than if I were to buy produce at TJ's or Vons. Easily. Vons will rape you on tomatoes @$2-3/lb while Sprouts has them for normally 49-90 cents a pound. I know stuff can be seasonal and all, but generally Sprouts will be the cheapest.

Yeah, I don't buy produce at grocery stores. The local farmer's market, ranch 99 and northgate do the trick for me. Sprouts is cheaper than a grocery store, but still too spotty for me to want to shop there all the time. Sometimes get stuff from Costco, but they've gone downhill quite a bit of late.

This. Brea isn't that mind-blowing. Any time I've gone in there I've just had a "meh" or "they want HOW much for this tiny piece of fruit?" reaction. Fail.

I got some disgusting mushy peaches at sprouts that totally turned me off their produce. they were firm outside but tasted as if they'd been frozen and defrosted. not worth it to me even if they were on sale at a good price.

I mainly get frozen and breakfast foods at trader joe's but I'll agree that their produce is lacking. their basil and tomatoes go bad so quickly.

I got a bag of Avocado's from TJ's and it went moldy in a couple of days...weird.
As a bachelor, If I don't use fresh produce right away I tend to forget it's there and it goes bad. haha, so much money wasted over the years.

Doesn't your TJ's sell basil plants? For the same cost, you gets weeks-months of basil.

I have never heard of Sprouts. Then again, I haven't heard of a lot of things.

I have heard of Whole Foods, but have never been there. Is that similar to TJs?

I really don't buy produce at TJs because there isn't very many of it and it's overpriced. And their meat selection isn't very good, but I am a borderline vegetarian so that doesn't really bother me. ;)

sprouts seems to be expanding so maybe you'll see one soon some day, orphy.

whole foods is super, but pricey. tons better than trader joe's is as far as fresh foods (meat and produce) go.

I agree about tj's meat. most of it tastes weird to me.

This is how we do our groceries

Produce- small Middle Eastern Market or Farmers Market
Meat/Bulk Items- Sprouts
Everyday **** -TJ

A Sprouts opened in Thousand Oaks while I've been gone. Anyone been to this one yet?

We do Whole Foods for bread and produce, Costco for big paper and detergents, TJs for everyday stuff and goodies, our local Ralph's has good meat, and Von's for fill-in/coupon items.

my mom went to sprouts in TO during the grand opening. she bought me a bunch of meat (lamb, sausage, stuffed clams) there. it was good. that's about all I know about that location. it's where the circuit city used to be.

i've been craving fancy foo foo pizza something fierce. i really need to go to tj's for the dough and such.

I looked it up and there is a Sprouts in La Habra, which isn't that far, but I haven't gone to it since I didn't know that it existed. Hahaha! ;)
