The Star Wars thread

And yes, I agree the movies would have been much better with better direction and dialogue. But still, I feel at its core the storyline of the prequels was as big of a problem or more.

I can see what you are saying here. I just don't see how the story of "falling from grace" was a flawed approach. But I can see how, if not done just right it fails badly...or has a higher risk of doing so. In fact, one of the issues I've had with the prequels is there weren't any strong bad guys. Maul was supposed to be the evil guy in SW1 but he didn't do anything but fight. Palpatine was there all along but didn't show himself until the end. So what you are left with are those absurd battle droids which never created any threat (like, say, Vader in the originals). The Jedi would cut through them like butter...too easy...and not very interesting.

As to the dialogue: I don't think the "dialogue" any worse than the originals. Here I think it's just that Lucas was so driven by his "1940s style melodrama" style it made it look ridiculous at times. You just can't use the "Gone with the Wind" style drama these days especially with rookie actors like Christiansen....let alone have him being directed by Lucas.

I do like your idea of Obi-wan being the focus. That could have worked as well. Given the actor (McGregor) had a lot more experience than Hayden Christiansen this might have worked better.

I just think that overall the prequels failed due to a lack of any kind of chemistry with the characters and that I blame on Lucas.

Trying to be open minded. Disney has gone incredibly mercenary as far as wanting as much product as quick as they can get...but they have drawn top talent. And...it is really starting to sound as if JJ will not be forced to make a movie just to fit a release date. The expectations were lowered so significantly by the prequels...it's actually going to be hard to fail.

I think there's some big time truth to that. On the flip side, the expectations were so HIGH for the prequels that you knew they were gonna be difficult to meet.

Regardless, they're really pulling out the big guns for this thing here and, at the very least, it certainly seems like they want to do it right (and make a ****ton of cash in the process).

Yeah, that's the thing it's gonna come down to. Does Disney just flood the market and hope for the best, or...do they do their best to balance the cash grab realizing that the better the product the more the long term results will be. It's actually going to be a fascinating process to watch unfold.

Sorry, but that Collider guy needs to buy a clue. There is nowhere to go but up with any SW movie that comes-out between 2015 and 2020. Clone Wars has been killing it for 5 seasons on Cartoon Network telling all kinds of stories.

If SW was treated like Disney (different movies with different characters every few years) then no one should complain. A Boba Fett movie along the lines of 'Tales of the Bounty Hunters' or the 'Bounty Hunter Wars' would be great up on the big screen.

I used to love Star Wars.

Then in my teens Lucas released the New Edition versions.

Then I liked Star Wars.

Then in my twenties the prequels came out.

Then I was indifferent to Star Wars.

Then in my thirties Disney bought Star Wars and is planning a never ending barrage of Star Wars.

Now I hate Star Wars.

**** you Star Wars... **** you.

C'mon, none of that is the original trilogy's fault! You can still love them.

C'mon...you really think that I(one of the most vocal supporters of practical Fx and one of the biggest prosthetic makeup junkies around) would allow this man to pass without the proper respect? You don't know me too well.

i saw it just after i posted.
