Uhh... massive? It's 295'. Queen Mary 2 is 1,100' long. Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas is 1,185' . This is a pocket cruiser. Hell, even Larry Ellison's private yacht Rising Sun is 495'.

There's lots to criticize here, from the behavior of the previous owners to the actions of the Canadian government, but when you dip into inaccurate hyperbole it weakens your argument.

And from St. Johns, Newfoundland to Ireland is approximately 1,983 miles; if the Orlova is 2/3 of the way to Ireland she's still over 600 miles away. Yesterday 3:37pm

Sorry we don't all have personal watercraft the size of Larry Ellison's yacht! For the non-billionaires, a 295-foot-long ship is huge, thank you very much .... especially when it's filled with disease-ridden cannibal rats.

Glad you know your sea distances, though, or at least how to quickly look them up. When disaster strikes, this is the kind of knowledge people need to have at hand. Yesterday 7:19pm

Somehow I don't believe you're sorry at all. Oh wait —was that supposed to be irony? Because it feels more like sarcasm.

That should be non-billionaires, people who don't live in port cities, regular people who don't work for shipping firms directly or don't work for companies that are involved in supporting shipping, or don't work for state, federal or local governments that run our ports and regulate shipping in U.S. waters... in fact, the majority of Americans. But a large number of people do work in these fields, and to them you can add people who have a general interest in maritime history and law. That's a lot of people! And they know that 295' isn't huge. Should we not tell you?

Reading that phrase in the environment of Gawker comments gives me an inner glow. If I were afraid of a few disease-ridden cannibal rats, would I be here?

Imagine for a moment that we've just learned that a shipment of, let's say, disease-ridden cannibal rats is traveling right now between where I am and where you are. What would give you more useful information so that you could plan a response to this awful situation — news that the rats are two-thirds of the way from me to you, or that the rats (remember, they're disease-ridden and cannibals!) are 600 miles away from you? Personally, I'd feel better knowing they're 600 miles away. Why wouldn't you?
