The Trade Deadline Thread

I’ll take Jeff Carter back if Pittsburgh throws in a pick.
They absolutely hate him in Pittsburgh so maybe we can get him with a sweetener while the Pens try to retool.

I'd be looking to get picks rather than deal them. So taking on some contracts for picks is worth exploring.

Looking at his EDGE stats he’s still got above average speed. Maybe he doesn’t have that elite burst any longer but he can still move. And his shot is as hard as ever.

Plus we know he’s fine playing Wing and Center.

**** it. Go get him Blake!

You’re thinking of a different Jeff Carter… he‘s a memory. This current guy is older, slower and doesn’t contribute so much any more. Kings need someone to play with 9 and 11, or 55 and 80. That’s not Carter. I would rather see them keep Turc at 4C and find a little younger right shot winger
Take a look at the sellers around the league. That guy isn’t available. The guys who are available are left shots or covered in warts. Take your pick.

Give me the guy who skates about as fast as Arvidsson, who shoots harder, has size and has been to the top of the mountain. Even if he is old.

We don’t need a prime Jeff Carter. We need someone who can play 13-15 minutes a night. Help out the PP. And add some veteran leadership.

Carter checks all the boxes. We just played the Penguins and he wasn’t even close to the worst player on the Pens. In fact he had a better game than about half the Kings that played in that sleepwalk fest.

Agreed, Carter still brings a lot to the table which the Kings are in need of - especially leadership. I've been watching him this season and he looks pretty good out there. His reaction time is down, but he still has speed, positioning and a good shot (accuracy is down though also). If he had decent linemates he'd be doing quite a bit better in regards to the stat line.

Down side is that he is overpaid for what he produces, but given that he is a UFA after this season that really shouldn't matter much.

Would be great to see him retire as a King.

Right shot. Wins draws. Hits. Big strapping body.

I may faint.

Just gotta move him through Columbus so we can launder more cap space.

I loved Carts when he could play.

But I am afraid Father Time has done his damage to our old friend.

39 years old, 6 goals, 2 assists, -7 in 48 games played. $3.125 million cap hit.

Only good stat is his 64% faceoff number. His -7 is second worst on the team.

Kings don’t need a faceoff specialist who brings little else at this stage of his life.

2 assists for a center? Seriously? Why would the Kings trade for a player everyone in Pittsburgh wants to get rid of?

Blake should only trade for Carter because it would increase the odds of him getting fired in the summer. It is a terrible idea. By every metric (like point shares) he is terrible and he gets caved in by elite competition. Every Pens fan is not stupid. They know he doesn't contribute nearly enough to justify his cap hit.

The days of Carter being a full time, top 6 player, are gone.

We need a 4th line player, who is willing to hit, can win a draw, can move up or play on the power play occasionally, and is right handed. Why is that so important? Simply because all of our centers are left handed. The offensive team after an icing or penalty gets to choose the side, and the majority of the time, they are left handed. This gives them an advantage. We then have a center who needs to take the draw on their forehand or pull it back towards our net, which is a no no.

If we rinse him through Phoenix or Columbus for a middle round pick, the cap hit is palatable.

He knows the room, loves it here, and will fit in.

Not asking him to play 20
Minutes a night or play against the top centers in the league. 10 minutes, win some draws, hit people, may pot a goal or three.

And if doesn’t work out, he can sit in the press box.

To quote Billy Beane, “I’m not asking you to be the player you were, I just want to milk the last little bit that you have left”.

It’s not about being stupid or how little he’s produced this season. It’s about fit. Any player acquired at this deadline is a band aid.

The Kings have a hole on the right side of the 2nd or 3rd line while Arvidsson is out. they don’t have the assets or cap space to fill it beyond this season. That narrows the scope of who the team can trade for significantly. This is specifically why I suggested Eberle first.

Eberle is far from the ideal addition but he fits. Jeff Carter also fits. That fit doesn’t mean that either player will succeed. It just means there’s a higher probability that they do vs. a left shot forward on a multiple year contract. Carter also has other intangibles that make him a fit in the locker room.

The cost to acquire Eberle will be significant *if* he chooses to accept a trade to LA. The cost to acquire Carter couldn’t be more than a draft pick or an aging out prospect.

This type of vet on his last legs trade was a Dean Lombardi special. From Freddy Modin to Vincent Lecavalier to Jarome Igninla. There’s nothing wrong with picking up a vet for next to nothing when the alternate is sit on your hands and try what already hasn’t worked.

Why do people think Carter would somehow turn into Lappy if he came back to the Kings? And why is a right shot 4C somehow more important than finding a winger to play on Kopi's line or PLD's line or a LD? Even in his youth, Carter was never a physical player unless he had the puck. But now he plays at half-speed and his aggression level is 0. He is NOT a 4th line player. I am sure the Kings could do better on a right shot rental. No one knows who is actually available given the right deal.

Guess you didn’t really watch his game when he was here. He didn’t drop the gloves, but he played a more physical game that you are remembering. It’s not all about laying people out with hits a la Dustin Brown, but more about making a hit when you need to, or leaning on a player in the corner, or taking abuse in front of the net and not getting thrown around.

Isn't this just dumpster diving for former stars? Vinnie and Iginla provided entertainment value on mediocre teams. Modin was a name in a Lombardi box. If Blake is gonna make a deal, I hope he will aim higher.
