If you want to talk about guys getting paid too much, let’s focus on Drew Doughty. He’s never been worth 11m cap hit, when guys like Fox, Josi, Hughes, Makar all getting around 9m. Of course, the market at the time he signed was high, and they had every indication the cap would keep going up steadily, but the Covid blip derailed that. I’m pretty sure even Drew feels a bit guilty, given his comments last off season about wishing he could get some of it back when they were desperate to sign Gavrikov to an extension.

I understand what everyone’s saying about, wish he would’ve taken the hometown discount, but I just don’t think that was ever going to happen. It would be interesting to see what happens in the case of Drew doughty, but given the length of his remaining term, he might not even be serviceable by the time is current contract expires.

Enough has been reported about Doughty's ridiculous contract over the years. At the time, I was very upset about this particular Blake blunder. Wasn't his deal considered the worst or second worst in the league not too long ago? Trade him, even if it means retaining 25-30%, after this season. Kings got fleeced on that one.
 
Surprised that teams waiting this long. I remember hearing that earlier trades gives the incoming more time to adjust. Maybe the offers are underwhelming or asking price too high?

I agree the $7m AAV is an overpayment and if he truly wanted to win he could have taken a team friendly, or at least a bit more reasonable, deal - but he has been one of the most consistent players in Kings history and though his skill will likely fade over the next two seasons his effort will not. Still would have liked to see him sign around $5m, though, which is around where his impact for the next two years projects to be.

Drew on the other hand....good player but I'd like to see him moved (with salary retained) as his contract is simply ridiculous. I doubt the Kings would ever do it, though, and ultimately he has, and continues, to contribute a lot to this franchise. Still, I'd like to see a player like Anderson have the chance to emerge as a leader and I just don't see anyone in the D core getting the chance as long as Drew is on the team.

While Drew is not racking up the assists, he's now tied for second in goalies by a defenseman. I doubt many folks here would guess that he'd be scoring at this level. My gut tells me Kopi and Drew retire as Kings...but I thought Quick would as well.

I don't know why people keep bringing up Quick retiring as a king, he was and is and always will be a hockey player first. Retiring as a king was a woulda been nice idea, but playing hockey was always his priority.

We all know players get paid for past performance more than future performance. That is why rookies and early career players are a better value than late career players.

You have a valid point when it comes to in team salary comparisons - the only two on that list which he should arguably make less than on his next contract are Fiala and Kempe.

Considering Kempe makes less than anyone on that list, with the exception of Danault who he is on par with, I'll be curious to see what he signs for in 26/27.

I would add Moore and Mikey Anderson to the untouchable list.

The "would be nice to keep" list, only in regards to what they bring to the ice:
Arvidsson - but not if he can't prove he can stay healthy
Danault
Kempe
Roy
Fiala - unless he keeps doing stupid sh1t
Laferriere
Lizotte

I would hate to see Kopi and Drew be traded the way Quick was. Their jerseys will be hanging in the rafters, along with Quick's. Let them retire as Kings.

Blake is not capable of building a championship team. He needs to be gone.

Nobody is untouchable. The reality is with the cap and the NTC/NMC clauses, players are harder to move, but it’s not impossible.

Let’s say an entire new regime comes in, and feels that this group can’t win it all. They get approval to blow it all up, and go to Kopitar and Doughty and explain that. They’d be willing to find them a new home to their liking, and a chance to win again before they retire. We eat some cap hit to facilitate the deal, and it gets done.

Moore and Andersons contracts are more valuable in comparison to the market for their skills. They’re worth additional assets. Making a large move at the deadline probably involves one or both, and I just don’t see it.

It’s simple, we’re going to have to win with what we have. We’re probably not getting a goaltender, and we might get some 3rd or 4th line help, but that’s about it. I would have thought that we could be more creative with the recent injuries pushing to the playoffs, but we’re either unwilling to risk the repercussions or incapable of doing what would be required to pull that off.

And we’re going to watch Vegas do it for a 2nd straight year.

When I said "untouchable" I mean I personally don't want them traded. I should have stated "my personal untouchable list regardless of contract status or cap hit." Definitely a frustrating season, since they started out so darn good.

I would suggest looking at Kopitar's career earnings rather than focusing solely on a yearly amount. Dude has made huge dollars (9 figures!) from AEG. He could play for $1 per season and remain well-ensconced among the filthy rich - especially when he goes back to Slovenia. "Sacrificing" a couple of million/season won't be upsetting to his retirement plan.

And....did he not reacently put up his beach house for super $? To me, that kind of raised a flag, he would be open to move for another chance at a cup.
Folks, lets not get confused. Doughty, Kopitar and Quick got a taste of winning a cup.
I assume Quick wanted another (and didn't see it in LA) and he got it (Vegas)
and he has a chance for another with NYR.

All I am saying is......Trade Doughty and Kopitar. The Kings can get something for them NOW.
The Quick trade was horrible. Let the Kings learn from that
