Trade Deadline Thread

stupid Stars are gonna win the Cup. I hate that team so much.
I do remember the 2000s when they would beat the Kings regularly (except for the Royal Rebound!). That said, they've never played the Kings in the playoffs (while in Dallas), so it's hard to have much dislike for them. Actually, with Robertson (who was born in my hometown and went to the same school I did, though many years apart), I hope they do go all the way. If they take out the Oilers, even better!

Nightmare averted. Although presuming McDavid resigns there it would be nearly 50% of the cap for three players. Over 50% with Nurse lol. Or Bouchard if they miraculously manage to ditch Nurse one of these days.

The top heavy strategy is potentially valid in this case because it’s Draisaitl and McDavid (and Ratanen) those three are more productive than just about any other forwards in the league. Draisaitl, McDavid and Rantanen would be playing 25 minutes a game in the playoffs so you’re essentially rolling 3 lines most nights.

Then the trick becomes finding average NHL talent to fill out half your lineup at near minimum wage. Difficult but not impossible.

Now all of that plan goes to **** because they botched the Nurse contract. You can afford to overpay one bad defender (Bouchard) but you can’t afford two. And to top it off they let Broberg walk. Really poor asset management, thankfully.

The cap going up to $113M will be huge for them in particular because they will be a cap team for as long as McDavid is on the roster.

Those three are actually just slightly more productive than the Kings entire top 6 forwards in terms of overall points. They’ve also collectively scored 98 goals this season, and the Kings top 6 goal scorers have accounted for 110 goals. Considering McJesus missed 6 games and Rantanen’s 13 games with the canes were well below his established pace, that’s certainly not a good look, and it would have been an absolute nightmare for us in the foreseeable playoffs, for the next 5 to 7 years.

Expanding on my last post a little bit, I’m surprised Edmonton would fall short in terms of assets required to swing this deal, unless they’ve already traded away their next three first round picks. Because they absolutely should have pulled something like that, possibly even their next 4 first round picks in exchange for the ability to swing a sign and trade with rantanen. Those are all going to be very late first round picks anyways, and they could have easily overpaid rantanen to a fair degree due to the rising salary cap next year and the year after. There are no guarantees in life, but picks be damned for the next four years, as a roster like that could potentially end you up icing a 3 to 5 year dynasty type team.

Furthermore I bet McDavid would have taken a mild haircut on his contract in exchange for another player like Rantanen on the team. Something Drew Doughty absolutely did NOT do for us when it came time to sign his bloated legacy contract.

It’d carry its own risks though what you’re describing does make sense in theory. The power play would be automatic. Probably 100 percent against the Kings in the playoffs.

I am certainly grateful their asset management meant they couldn’t meet Dallas’ offer, though it’s funny they couldn’t. Their first rounders are right around where Dallas’ will be. Oh well, time to double down on Bouchard.
