Waiver Watch

It isn't poor roster management at this point of the preseason where teams have to cut players. This is standard procedure. It may suck if they lose valuable players, but that's life.
People fall in love with prospects and that is reality too. Some are still crying over "losing" Thomas Hickey--an undersized bottom pairing guy.

I'm not as devastated over losing him that some people are. He was a n ok player but I don't think he was going to make the Kings better than who they had already on the roster. And there are a lot more prospects younger than him who have way more potential. Also, it's not good for his development to be somewhere between the NHL & AHL like he is now for us. If he's got a better opportunity in Nashville then good for him.

Perhaps, but you can't argue that Blake didn't have ample time to try and clear out some of the bottleneck in the AHL through trades but failed to do so.

IMO- you are way off here.

Waivers are a reality of sports. The waiver system is designed to increase parity but also give players a chance in other organizations after a certain amount of time with the organization.

These were all the players waived recently

Losing players in a reality. Every year each team starts with 7 picks . I have heard a few scouts say a team is doing really well if two players per draft make the NHL

5 from that draft

Fagemo has been given every chance
Let's look at his numbers compared to his peers

22-23

A defenseman had more points that him. Lias Andersson who couldn't stick in the NHL with 2 different orgs outproduced him handily .54 PPG in the AHL for a gial scorer is pretty bad
Compare that to Byfield's 1.125 ppg
IYO- Who's roster spot should Fagemo be taking?

Thomas has been injury riddled and never played more than 40 games in a season and only 13 last year. Who should be making the team over IYO?

Same w/ Madden .46 ppg in the AHL
Who should Madden be making the team over IYO?
I'm not saying they should be on the Kings roster, I am saying Blake should have attempted to trade them over the past season or in the offseason. Thomas, I agree regarding injuries would make him hard to move (though he was rumored to have been inquired about last season as part of a trade package that didn't go through), Madden has been a disappointment and gets beaten out by JAD (JAD gets beaten out by Lewis as of this season), Fagemo had value enough to bring in at least a mid round pick.

Also it's less probable for a team to pull a player off waivers during the preseason as they are looking to evaluate and cut their own squad and reduce an already bloated roster. When such players are picked up, it's a pretty clear indicator that they had trade value.

I commend you on your post, though, I just see it differently.

I'm not saying what happened today will crush my hopes this season, however, it has completely put a damper on the season ahead. The Kings took a huge risk and lost, now they will pay dearly for sewing Mercury Insurance patches on their jerseys.

And you are basing this on what? How many non-first round prospects that a team is obviously giving up on get traded for picks instead of going on waivers?

I do think Fagemo could have had trade value, but he wasn't ever going to get a chance to show what it could be in our current system. Rob has been very good, almost too good, at keeping the pipeline well-stocked the past 3-4 seasons. Which means good players have to move on.
That’s fair. I think we could see the same thing with Moverare. Another if, but if he had been given ice time last year instead of Edler, he’d likely have value now. Instead he’s cleared waivers twice and certainly has no trade value. I believe he has shown enough to play somewhere in the NHL as a 3rd pair D. Hopefully for his own sake he gets that chance soon.

I think this hits the closest to the reality of the situation. This team has improved faster than Fagemo has developed. If the squad was still playing for top 5 picks Fagemo would be on the roster. This squad isn't however and that's not a knock of Fagemo's NHL talent level. Some of the same can be applied to everyone else that cleared. I'm willing to bet we'll hear about a past relationship in the Nashville world that will give credence to why they took their chance on claiming him.

When it comes down to maximizing assets I'm more than willing to judge Blake on moves like Danault, VA, Gavrikov, Fiala. Getting into banking draft picks for waiver claims is the realm of diminishing returns. You can build a very successful program over the long term by minding all the nickels, but rarely do you build something that reaches for the stars with that focus. Not every transaction is a competition, sometimes they're win win, sometimes they're lose lose and sometimes they're just life moving along.

All of this over Fagemo? Huge Risk? You are tripping. How the hell is letting any of these players go a huge risk? He couldn’t make the Kings and barely could have made Reign?
