Watched HBO's Game of Thrones and can't wait a year to see where the story goes. Question, do I need to read the first one or just jump in with the second book?
Also just picked up this:
Recently started book one...read it, there is enough depth to justify it.

just like any "book-to-movie/show" they have to cut out bits and pieces for time. but they did keep it very very close to the book and actually didnt cut that much out. just little nuances*(SP?) the direwolves are much more involved in the story. jon's wolf Ghost, is much more prevelent in the book as well as Bran's wolf Summer. but summer comes out much more in the 2nd book. as well as ghost. thats what was missing in the show for me.
but they also added a few things that were not in the book. there are hints of renly being homosexual in the 2nd book but in the show they had the scene with renly and ser loras. some of the conversations with littlefinger and varys, cersei & robert and a few others. because in the 1st book the story is mainly told from the stark side (catelyn, jon, bran, ned, sansa, & arya. rob has no chapters) and tyrion. they give an insite as to whats going on with those characters in the show only.

finished Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Last Wish" which is a compilation of short stories based on Geralt of Rivia dating back to the mid-80's which inspired the awesome PC RPG Games 'The Witcher' & 'The Witcher 2' was a pretty good read. just had to keep in mind that its a bunch of short stories.
also started reading Glen Cook's 'The Swordbearer' which is a really short 250page book i got from a closing borders for about 5bux. i wanted to read his 'black company' series but i wanted to see his writing style first. so $5 for a $15book.. not too bad

You have a record of reading really good stuff i.m.o. and I wholeheartedly endorse The Black Company. Some of my favorite books. I have read the original trilogy repeatedly. I really miss those characters.

I have to catch up still waiting for Changes to come out in paperback

just finished Glen Cook's 'The Swordbearer' didnt like it all that much kind of just jumbled around and was really too short to be a good story. parts of it were good and parts of it were un-readable. id probably give it 2 out of 5

Finishing this for yet another time - want to finish it again prior to seeing part 2 this weekend. Still as good as I had remembered.

yea i want to finish off that series pretty soon, but i actually decided on A Feast For Crows. want to get back up to speed on that series as we just picked up the new 'A Dance with Dragons' this morning so im pretty excited about it.

I am halfway thru the first book, and although the show really found a way to get most of it right, it's little details and things that got compressed that make it a great read. I just finished a segment where the Hound reveals his origin(among other things) directly to Sansa and it really gave it a lot more weight and gave his handing her the hanky in the last episode a little more weight. Read it.
